Children on the Beach

When our children were little, my husband and I lived in the Town of Hounsfield (Jefferson County, N. Y.) in one-half of the double farmhome owned by my parents. Generally, I dressed our girls in dresses (starched and ironed, of course). They were born a year and eleven days apart and I usually dressed them alike. Naturally, they got dirty in our not very clean surroundings. The picture below was probably taken on one of the refreshing mornings after a summer rain when the mud puddles in the driveway looked especially enticing to two little girls.

As free time became more abundant, my interests expanded and I became acquainted with paintings like Mary Cassatt’s “Children on the Beach”. Never do I look at this reprint without thinking of this photo taken of our girls oh so many years ago. (by Shirley Farone - site hostess)
