REDWOOD - Mrs. Augusta McDowell, 67, of Albany, wife of Raymond McDowell, a native of Redwood, died Thursday night at her home in Albany.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Quincer-Frederick Brothers Funeral Home, Rev. Bruce B. Schrader, pastor, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Redwood Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to ( p.m.

Surviving are her husband, four brothers, Bert J. Schneider, Redwood, Walter F. Schneider, Watertown, Frank S. Schneider, Smithville, Oscar P. Schneider, Theresa; five sisters, Mrs. Floyd (Ina) Leeson, Redwood, Mrs. Harry (Jeanette) Vanatta, Theresa, Mrs. Roscoe (May) Hunter, Mrs. Francis (Clara) Dickhaut, and Mrs. Robert (Pauline) Kabel, all of Redwood.

She was born Dec. 3, 1907, one of 12 children of Delbert and Marie Sottler (sic) Schneider in the Town of Alexandria. She was graduated from Theresa High School, Antwerp Teachers Training Class and Potsdam State Normal School.

She was married to Raymond McDowell in Redwood in 1941. After their marriage, Mrs. McDowell taught in Schnectady for 17 years. Her husband, now retired, was employed by the Shell Oil Co.

Mrs. McDowell was graduated from Theresa High school, Antwerp Teachers Training class and Potsdam State Normal school. She taught school in Schenectday, Utica and later in the Albany school system. She earned her bachelor of science and masters degree from Albany State University college. During this semester she was doing specialized tutoring in remedial reading. She was active in community and civic affairs.

On July 19, 1941 she was married in Redwood to Raymond McDowell who was employed by Shell Oil Co., now retired.

Edward Martin Succumbs At 48 - May 25, 1964
Lisbon School Bus Driver Has Heart Attack While Driving Car

Ogdensburg, May 25. -- Edward J. Martin, 48, Pray road, farmer and, for the past ten years, Lisbon Central school bus driver, died unexpectedly Saturday night about 9:45 while driving his car on the Van Rensselaer road a mile west of Pine Grove.

He pulled to the roadside and collapsed. His 17-year old daughter, Susan, who was riding with him, turned off the ignition and braked the car. She went to the Willard Green farm and sought help.

Brought to the A. Barton Hepburn hospital by the Lisbon volunteer fire department, Mr. Martin was pronounced dead.

Dr. Ernest E. Thompson, Lisbon, St. Lawrence county coroner, released the body to the Nichols funeral home. There was no autopsy.

The funeral will be at the Nichols funeral home Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. and at St. Mary’s Cathedral at 10. Burial will be in St. Mary’s cemetery.

Surviving Mr. Martin besides his daughter, Susan L., are his wife, Mrs. Jean P. Martin; a son, Edward Roy, 19, serving in the air force at Camp Goodfellow, Tex.; another daughter, Kathy Ann, 12; two sisters, Mrs. Gordon (Frances) Putney, Stony Point, and Mrs. Delbert (Mary) Harper, Ogdensburg, RD 1; nephews and nieces.

Mr. Martin was born Nov. 6, 1915, at Volney, son of Roy and Ann Fobare Martin. During World War II he served with a cavalry unit. He married Jean Pray of Morristown on Dec. 3, 1942, Rt. Rev. Msgr. V. Noel Zimmerman officiating, at the Catholic church there. He was a member of St. Mary’s cathedral parish and Lisbon Post 1342, American Legion.

ALTA E. MAITLAND

Alexandria Bay -- Alta E. Maitland, 54, Windmill Road, Henderson, formerly of Goose Bay area, died Saturday at her home following a lengthy illness.

The funeral was Tuesday at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville, with the Rev. David Simmons, chaplain for Hospice of Jefferson County, officiating. Spring burial will be in Rural Cemetery, Adams. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County or to the Henderson Rescue Squad.

She is survived by her husband, Richard H., Henderson; one son, Richard L., Dexter; one daughter, Elizabeth M. Kettle, Franklinville; two brothers, Lester Cooley, Henderson, and Allen Cooley, Avoca; a sister, Mrs. Charles (Ida) Monaghan, Carthage, and a half-sister, Mrs. John (Betty) Hilts, Hannibal; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Her mother, Lenora (sic) Howland of Fulton, died Sunday.

She was born Feb. 13, 1935 in the Town of Alexandria, the daughter of the late Lester F. and Lenora Palmer Cooley. She attended Alexandria and Redwood schools and worked for two years as a hostess on Association Island in Henderson Harbor. She also worked for one year as a nurse’s aide at Mercy Hospital.

In 1954 she went to work for Safety Tool Corp., Watertown, where she worked for 23 years. She retired in 1977.

She married Richard H. Maitland on Oct. 4, 1957 in Belleville. Following their marriage they lived in Depauville for eight years before moving to their present home in Henderson in 1965. A marriage to Daniel Grandjean ended in divorce.

She was a life member of the state Old Time Fiddlers Association and the Black River Valley Fiddlers. She was also a charter member number 38 of the North American Fiddlers Hall of Fame. In addition, she was a member of DAV Auxiliary and the American Legion Post 1757 Auxiliary, Sackets Harbor. She was also a charter member of Henderson Fireman’s Auxiliary and a member of Top’s, Adams.

Margaret D. McGraw - January 26, 2000
Funeral Director, Nurse

CARTHAGE -- Margaret D. McGraw, 76, of 311 Charles Ave., Solvay, died Tuesday evening at Community-General Hospital, Syracuse.

Born Feb. 20, 1923, in Carthage, daughter of J. Edward and Kathleen Pierce Doyle, she was a 1940 graduate of Augustinian Academy and a 1944 graduate of A. Barton Hepburn Hospital School of Nursing, Ogdensburg.

A registered nurse, she worked at Community-General Hospital and the old Carthage Hospital from 1944 to 1959.

She married Charles J. McGraw on Jan. 13, 1945, at St. James Church with the Rev. George Egan officiating. They were summer residents of Lake Bonaparte.

The couple operated McGraw Funeral Home of Carthage from 1959 until June 1980> Mrs. McGraw became a licensed funeral director in 1963. Mr. McGraw died Nov. 28, 1980.

Mrs. McGraw, a resident of Solvay since the late 1980’s, was a communicant of St. Cecelia’s Church, Solvay, and a member of the Carthage Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Browning Club and St. Joseph’s Workers.

She was past president of Bassett-Baxter American Legion Post 789 Auxiliary and a life member of the Carthage Little Theatre.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Kathleen) Palermo, Rome, and Mrs. Dana (Elizabeth) Smith, Solvay; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen McGraw, Watertown; a sister, Mrs. Norman (Elizabeth) Hallen, Sun City, Ariz., six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

A son, Michael, died in 1994, and a daughter, Patricia McGraw, died in 1976 at age 29.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church with the Rev. Kris C. Lauzon, parochial vicar, officiating. Spring burial will be St. James Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bagozzi’s Twins Funeral Home, Solvay.

Arrangements are with Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage.

Howard Maxson

Alexandria Bay -- Howard C. Maxson, 79, Rt. 26, died Oct. 15 at Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay where he had been a patient since Aug. 27.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Giltz Funeral Home with the Rev. John Follett, pastor of the Alexandria Bay Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred; a son, Howard J., Brier Hill; three grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Pauline Kring, Clayton, Mrs. Roger (Martha) Rapp, Vernon and Mrs. Leona Richter, Cedars Nursing Home, Ogdensburg.

Two sisters, Mrs. Louise (Irene) Stewart, Gouverneur and Mrs. Cyriel (Viva) Heath, Alexandria Bay, and a brother, Leland Maxson, Weatherford, Tex., predeceased him.

He was born in the Town of LeRay on Sept. 21, 1905, son of Byron A. and Linnie M. Tremblin Maxson. He attended schools in Morristown and Richville.

He had been an airplane pilot for many years, receiving his private license in 1939 and his commercial license and instructor’s rating in 1942.

He worked for many years on construction jobs in various parts of the country. For more than 20 years he was maintenance superintendent for KeeWah Camps in Wingdale. During World War II, he was in a private project in Texas learning to be an instructor In glider piloting.

After the war he returned to Wingdale, moving to Alexandria Bay in 1954 when he helped to construct the Holland Street marina for Hutchinson’s Boat Works. He worked at Hutchinson’s for several years, and then at Bonnie Castle Yacht Basin.

D. D. T. Marshall, Redwood, Dies
Well Known Educator of The North Country Dies After Long Illness

Redwood: D. D. T. Marshall, 81, one of the best known educators of Jefferson county, died at his home on Christian hill at midnight on Sunday after an eleven year period of ill health. He had not been seriously ill until after the death of his wife which occurred on March 17, 1940.

Mr. Marshall was born son of Thomas Benton Marshall and Sarah Crabb, May 4, 1860, at the Marshall homestead located on the military road leading from Redwood to Ogdensburg, which is now known as Hammond. He resided at the homestead until 1890 when he came to Redwood where he has since resided. He received his early education in the Hammond district schools, the village schools of Redwood, later attending Potsdam Normal form which institution he graduated in 1883. Following his graduation he taught school in Smithville for two years, in Adams Center three years and in Theresa for six years.

He was elected School Commissioner in 1896 and served five terms and was then elected District Superintendent of schools in the Towns of Alexandria, Antwerp and Theresa, in which capacity he served until his retirement on Feb. 1, 1930 because of ill health.

Mr. Marshall was well known in Northern New York in educational circles and was a very familiar figure at all school meetings and conventions, held in this region.

He had many other affiliations. He was a charter member of the Jefferson County Teacher’s Association and in 1930 the organization presented Mr. Marshall with a gold watch as a token of appreciation for his many years of faithful service. He had also held various offices in the Association of District Superintendents of New York State.

His marriage to Miss Jennie Putnam, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Putnam of Clayton took place in Clayton on July 4, 1895. Mrs. Marshall passed away here at the family home after a short illness on March 17, 1940.

Affiliated with the Mason organization M. Marshall was a member of the Theresa Masonic lodge and of the Watertown Commandery No. 11 Knights Templar. A member of the Kirkland Subordinate Grange and of the National Grange for a period of fifty years. Mr. Marshall was presented with a golden sheaf award in June 1940, in recognition of this long membership.

A life long Republican, Mr. Marshall was always interested in party politics and in party contests. He was also a director in the Redwood National Bank for many years.

His survivors include two sons, Glenn P. Marshall, of Massillon, Ohio; Allen D. Marshall, of Schenectady; one granddaughter, Jean Marshall, Massillon, O.; two grandsons, Donald Tompkins Marshall and John Leahy Marshall, Schenectady.

Funeral services were held fro his late home on Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock with the Rev. Kenneth D. Jones, pastor of the Redwood Methodist church officiating. Burial was made in the family plot in the Redwood cemetery.

The flag at the Redwood school was placed at half mast each day this week in respect to Mr. Marshall. A representative group of students of the student council of the high school and accompanied by principal James A. Hastings, Mrs. Gladys Derby, Mrs. Ida Hofferberth and Mrs. Clara Jewett all members of the teaching staff here during Mr. Marshall’s years as superintendent attended the funeral in a body.

Bearers were James A. Hastings, Benton Cook, Frank Jewett, Henry Hartman, Louis Martin of Redwood and George F. Radley of Alexandria Bay.

Wife of D. D. T. Marshall, 77

Suffered a Stroke Three weeks Ago and Has Been in Failing Health Since--Death Caused From Cerebral Hemorrhage--Funeral Services to Be Held Tuesday

Redwood, March 18. -- (1940) Mrs. Jennie Putman (sic) Marshall, 77, wife of D. D. T. Marshall, died at her home in this village Sunday morning at 2:30 after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. She had been in failing health since she suffered a stroke three weeks ago.

She was born in Clayton Center, April 14, 1862, a daughter of Albert and Harriett Putman (sic). She received her education in the Clayton schools and was married to Mr. Marshall at the home of her parents on July 4, 1895. Since her marriage, she has always resided in this village. Mr. Marshall was a former public school superintendent of the fifth supervisory district of the county which comprises the town of Theresa, Antwerp and Alexandria. Mr. Marshall retired in 1930 after 33 years’ service.

Mrs. Marshall was a member of the Redwood Methodist church taking an active part in the work of the women’s organizations of the church for many years.

Surviving besides her husband are two sons, Glen P. Marshall, Massillon, O.; and Allen D. Marshall, Schenectady; one granddaughter, Miss Jean Marshall, Massillon, O.; two grandsons, Donald and John Marshall, Schenectady; and one sister, Mrs. George Luther, Clayton Center.

Funeral services will be held from the family home Tuesday afternoon at 2 with Rev. Louis Bruce, pastor of the Redwood Methodist church officiating. Burial will be made in the Redwood cemetery.

Dead, Aged 40

World War II Veteran -- Had Been Ill Since December -- Funeral Thursday

Gouverneur, May 1 -- Raymond Burton Morehouse, 40, of 73 East Main street, died at his home at 8:45 a.m. Monday after having been seriously ill since December.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the home of his brother, Robert P. Morehouse, Edwards. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Edwards.

Friends may call at the brother’s home at their convenience.

Mr. Morehouse is survived by his mother, Mrs. Etta Morehouse, Edwards; a son, John, 12, Hermon; four daughters, Mrs. Howard (Sheila) Abrante, Gouverneur; Mrs. LeRoy (Mary Lee) Brown, Bainbridge, and Miss Patty Morehouse and Miss Sunday Rae Morehouse, both living in Hermon; three sisters, Mrs. Bernard (Ina) Sloan, Edwards; Mrs. James (Marion) Bottom, Lexington, Ky., and Mrs. Alexander (Charlotte) Jessmer, Talcville; six brothers, Harold, of Lawrence, Mass., Le Roy, North Tonawanda; Earl, serving with the air force in South Dakota; Wayne, living in Florida, and Robert and Arnold, both of Edwards, and two grandchildren.

He was born in Massena, June 28, 1922, a son of John W. and Etta Dana Morehouse, and attended Gouverneur schools. He served with the army in World War II and worked most of his life as a heavy construction equipment driver.

He married the former Miss Thelma Elliott at Antwerp on June 15, 1945, but the marriage ended in annulment in 1953. She lives in Hermon.

Mrs. Etta Morehouse Dies at 68 - Oct. 30, 1967

GOUVERNEUR -- Mrs. Etta M. Morehouse, 68, Edwards, widow of John Morehouse, died Friday at 9:30 p.m. at Edward John Noble hospital where she had been admitted a month ago.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. James church, Very Rev. Msgr. Robert J. McCarthy, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. James cemetery. Friends may call at the Sprague funeral home this evening.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Bernard (Ina) Sloan, Edwards, with whom she had resided; Mrs. Ray (Marion) Vicente, Kentucky; Mrs. Alex (Charlotte) Jessmer, Salem, N. H.; six sons, Harold, Lawrence, Mass.; Arnold, Fine; LeRoy, Tonawanda; Earl, Tuscon, Ariz.; Robert, Edwards; Wayne, Pennsylvania; 37 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

She was born at Port Henry, Sept. 6, 1899, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Dana and attended school at Massena. She married John Morehouse at Massena, Jan. 25, 1914.

Mr. Morehouse was employed at the Massena Aluminum plant for 14 years, after which the couple moved to Gouverneur. He was employed by the Antwerp Roofing company and later Jones & Laughlin Steel company. Mr. Morehouse was killed by lightning July 6, 1948.

WIDOW OF J. C. MORROW, 88, DIES
Mrs. Ada Morrow Expires At Her Family Home
Well Known Theresa Resident

Her Parents, Mr. and Mrs. William D. Chapman, Were Among Pioneers of Theresa Section--Funeral to Be Held Saturday

Theresa, Feb. 27 -- Mrs. Ada Morrow, 88, widow of J. C. Morrow, died at her family home in Main street this village Wednesday evening, after a gradual decline in health which became more serious within the past few days. Her daughter, Mrs. Florence Wilbur, Tarrytown, reached here Wednesday morning, and a son, Attorney W. D. Morrow, long with the tax department in Albany, reached here this morning. Both Mrs. Wilbur and Mr. Morrow had been here previously but it was thought their mother’s health was better and they had returned to their homes.

Mrs. Morrow comes from a pioneer family of Theresa. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. William D. Chapman. The Chapmans ventured into this wilderness region with the Bodmans in 1918, coming from Deerfield, Mass. William Chapman built up one of the largest fishing tackle factories in the east in his day. He was an inventor of marked ability.

Mrs. Morrow was born in this village on July 26, 1847. She finished in the select schools here and married the late Jason C. Morrow about the year 1874. Mr. Morrow was a banker here, being connected with the pioneer Yost bank. He was also a supervisor and railroad commissioner of the town. She was Mr. Morrow’s second wife. To them were born two children, Florence, wife of Attorney Carl Wilbur of Tarrytown, and Attorney William D. Morrow of Albany, who survive. Mr. Morrow had two children by the first marriage, Hilon, retired banker of Blissfield, Mich., and Mrs. Maude Keeler of Toledo, O.

Mrs. Morrow died on the birthday of her only surviving sister, Mrs. Nellie Stockwell, who was 82. The sister and children are the only surviving relatives, with several grandchildren. She was a member of the Presbyterian church of Theresa.

The funeral services will be from the home at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Rev. A. R. Ehman officiating> Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery, which her husband assisted in founding. Relatives are arriving Friday from Tarrytown and Albany and other places.

Geraldine Karcher Merritt,, Expires

Mrs. Geraldine Karcher Merritt, 66, of 514 Mohawk St., Apt. 2, widow of Fred W. Merritt, died at 1:20 p.m. Friday at Mercy Hospital where she had been a patient two days.

The funeral will be Monday at 9 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Roswell G. Williams, rector, officiating. Burial will be in North Watertown Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Cleveland-Spink Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

She is survived by a son, Master Sgt. Fred D. Merritt, Camp Drum; two daughters, Mrs. Georgia Wright, Camp Drum, and Miss Sandra Merritt, Rome; a brother, Garnet Karcher, Maryville, Md.; 12 grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter. Another daughter, Mrs. Dolores Denny, predeceased her.

Born in Carthage, Feb. 3, 1908, the daughter of Amos C. and Grace Watson Karcher, she attended local schools and spent her early life in the Carthage section. She was married to Fred W. Merritt, Feb. 3, 1927, in Syracuse. She had resided in Watertown 47 years.

Mrs. Merritt was employed at the Hotel Woodruff many years ago. Mr. Merritt, timekeeper for the City of Watertown several years, died May 17, at the age of 70 years.

Alice Moore, 72 - Retired Principal

REDWOOD -- Alice Moore, 72, Pine Street, died suddenly Sunday morning shortly after being admitted to E. J. Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay.

A prayer service will be conducted at her home at 10:30 Wednesday morning, followed by mass at 11 at St. Francis Xavier Church, Redwood. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Redwood.

Calling hours are at her home in Redwood on Tuesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Howard (Elizabeth) Max, Redwood; a brother, Kenneth, Cleveland, Ohio; two nieces, Mrs. Thermon (Linda) Hazelton, Redwood, and Sister Ronald Marie of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, Watertown; and one nephew, Ron, Washington Conn.

Two sisters and one brother died earlier.

Miss Moore was born Aug. 31, 1908, in the town of Alexandria, the daughter of Emmett and Mary Boswell Moore. She graduated from Father Leo Memorial High School, Croghan, and the Antwerp Training Class and then taught in rural schools in the Alexandira Bay area.

She received her master’s degree in elementary education from Potsdam State Teacher’s College and took several special reading courses at Temple University.

Miss Moore taught in Saranac Lake and Long Island, later coming to LaFargeville and Alexandria Bay Central Schools as reading specialist. For ten years before her retirement, she was elementary supervising principal at Alexandria Bay Central School.

Miss Moore was a member of the Women’s Business and Professional Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Society, past secretary of the Northern Zone Reading Council and International Reading Association.

She was also a member of the Retired Teachers’ Association of Jefferson County, State Retired Teachers’ Association, Senior Citizens’ Club and No-More Alone Club.

Contributions may be made to St. Francis Xavier Church and the Redwood Rescue Squad.

LaFargeville -- Betty C. Mitchell, 69, Route 1, died June 5 at her home.

There was no funeral. Burial was in Clayton Cemetery.

Donations may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County Inc., 714 Washington St., Watertown.

Surviving are her husband, Albert E. “Tanny”; a son, Merle, LaFargeville; a daughter, Mrs. Allen (Margo) Rowledge, Otsego; five grandchildren; a brother, William Clark, Campfield, Pa., and several nieces and nephews.

Her twin brother, Robert Clark, died before her.

Born in the town of Clayton, Aug. 19, 1923, a daughter of William and Natalie Gould Clark, she graduated from Clayton High School in 1941.

She married Albert Mitchell of Alexandria Bay on Apr. 14, 1946, after which the couple moved to their home in LaFargeville.

Mrs. Sarah Mills - Dec. 26, 1984

COLLINS LANDING -- The funeral for Mrs. Sarah (Sally) Mills, 76, was held Friday at Frederick Brothers Funeral Home, Theresa, with Rev. Adele Spencer, officiating. Burial was in Black River Cemetery, Black River.

Mrs. Mills, Collins Landing, widow of Raymond died Wednesday Dec. 26, 1984 at Mercy Hospital, Watertown.

Donations may be made to the Cancer Foundation or the Alexandria Bay Rescue Squad.

She is survived by a daughter, Geraldine Rearick, Rochester; a son, Richard, of Danville, Ky.; and two grandchildren.

A sister, Evelyn Fawdry, Black River, died before her.

Born Dec. 5, 1908, in the Black River area, the daughter of Louis and Nettie Harrington Murray, she was graduated from Black River High School. She later was graduated from the licensed practical nursing school at Mercy Hospital. Mrs. Mills worked as LPN at Mercy Hospital and Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay, retiring in 1973.

She married Raymond Mills on May 5, 1930. Mr. Mills was a plant manager at Kraft Foods at Redwood until 1950 and at Clayton until his retirement after 39 years of service. He died on Feb. 23, 1983, at the age of 79.

Mrs. Mills was a member of the Methodist Church and the Senior Citizens of Alexandria Bay.

Albert E. Mitchell, 72, LaFargeville Dies

LAFARGEVILLE -- Albert E. “Tanny” Mitchell, 72, of County Route 3, died Saturday at his home.

There will be no funeral or calling hours. The body was cremated. There will be a memorial service at a later date at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.

Surviving are a son, Merle J., LaFargeville; a daughter, Mrs. Allen (Margo) Rowledge, Madrid; five grandchildren and a sister, Marjorie Goodheart, Plessis.

Two brothers, Arthur and Norman, and a sister, Maude, died before him.

Born Oct. 4, 1921, in Kingston, Ontario, he was the son of James and Adeline Stoddard Mitchell. He attended local schools in Ontario before the family moved to United States.

He married Betty Clark on April 14, 1946. Mrs. Mitchell died June 5, 1993.

Mr. Mitchell served as a medical technician in the Army during World War II.

He was a self-employed carpenter and worked for many years for the late Melvin C. Holm, chairman of the board of Carrier Corp., on Idle Isle. In 1973, Mr. Mitchell moved to Florida and worked for Carrier Corp., Naples, until 1981.

He was a member of Colon Couch American Legion Post 698, Clayton.

Mrs. Florence Makepeace

Theresa, May 20. -- Mrs. Florence Chadwick Makepeace, 80, died at her home in this village at 1 p.m. Sunday having been in failing health for several months. She had been up and around the house up until a few days ago.

She was born in this village on Feb. 22, 1866, a daughter of the late Chauncey and Emma Rodenhurst Chadwick. This was a prominent family which owned, at one time, the house next to the Episcopal church where the Hoyt family resided. Grover Cleveland, a relative, was a guest at the house as a boy.

Her husband was Jay J. Makepeace, a partner in the milling firm of Snell & Makepeace. This was the first firm in the north to install the roller process. Mr. Makepeace died several years ago.

Mrs. Makepeace was an active club member and held an honorary membership in the Theresa Progress club. For years she was secretary of the Theresa chapter, Order of Eastern Star. She was one of a number of local people whose birthdays came on Feb. 22. The group annually held a celebration of the event. Mrs. Makepeace was also a member of St. James’ Episcopal church.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence (Dorothy) Stotler, Redwood, and Mrs. Ruth Markell, Theresa.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 at the home, Rev. Carl Worden, rector of St. James church, officiating. Burial will be made in Oakwood Cemetery.
