Dies suddenly after a heart attack

FORMER CARRIAGE SHOP OWNER

For years was a member of the Theresa Band and once sang bass in Methodist Choir--visited family homestead with children and grandchildren Wednesday.

Theresa, Aug. 8.-- Mordecai L. Stotler, 87, prominent carriage maker of a generation or more ago, died suddenly at his home in Park street this morning. Death was caused by heart trouble.

He had taken a trip Wednesday with some of his children and grandchildren who are visiting here to the old Stotler farm near Hyde Lake. He was in fine spirits and told them many stories of his boyhood days. He had a fainting spell in the evening, but he was of such a robust constitution, his recovery was looked for. Death came suddenly this morning.

He was born at the Stotler homestead near Hyde Lake, Oct. 1, 1847, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Stotler. When a youth Mr. Stotler came to this village and secured a place in the Tyler carriage shop here as an apprentice. The day he began work Mr. Tyler had a business call out of town and jokingly told the youth to make a swell-box cutter, the hardest line of work in the shop, and went away. To his surprise, when he returned young Stotler had his fancy cutter well started and in good shape.

Later Mr. Stotler started his own shop and the Stotler cutters were famed over northern New York in their day. He also manufactured wagons , sleighs and milk wagons. When the auto came the carriage works began to be less successful. Mr. Stotler bought one of the first of the automobiles to come out and has driven a car ever since. Several years ago he sold his block in Main street and work shops but reserved the right to a basement floor where he still continued to work when he desired.

He married Miss Eunice Wilson, a daughter of a neighbor, Jan. 31, 1875. There were several anniversary celebrations in recent years at which the family all gathered.

Mr. Stotler was a member of the Methodist church of this village for many years he played in the Theresa band and at one time sang bass in the church choir.

Some two weeks ago his youngest daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Spalsbury, Lawrence, Kan., came home for a visit and was at the home when her father died.

He is survived by his wife and four children, Mrs. Jennie Eddy, Theresa; Mrs. Helen Gurnee, Sackets Harbor; Mrs. Gertrude Spalsbury, Lawrence, Kan., and Lawrence Stotler, Redwood. There are several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
