Wilbur Stanton - 1984

Redwood - Wilbur H. Stanton, 74, of 10926 Beals Road, Cohocton, a frequent visitor to Redwood, died Dec. 1 at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville after a long illness.

A native of Irondequoit and a Cohocton area resident for many years, he was a retired employee of Rochester Products in Rochester.

He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows lodges in Wayland and Rochester.

Survivors include his wife, Madalena Springer Stanton, formerly of this area; one daughter, Norma Blackburn of Marcy; three stepchildren, Ann Fowler Gardner of Penfield, Carol Fowler Swauger of Canaseraga and Robert Fowler of Florida; one sister, Frances Gilmore, and two brothers, Charles and George, all of Rochester; nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Dansville with the Rev. Dr. Bruce Griffith officiating.

Contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church memorial fund and the John C. Sable Heart Fund in care of the IOOF.

CARTHAGE -- The funeral for Keith L. Shettleton, 67, Old State Road, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. James E. Mulligan officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Naumburg.

Mr. Shettleton died Monday in the emergency room at Carthage Area Hospital.

Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bossuot-Lundy Funeral Home, where Bassett-Baxter American Legion Post 789 will conduct a service at 7 p.m. and Elks Lodge 1762 at 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Shettleton had been superintendent of Sunnyside Cemetery since 1990 and was recently employed by Fairview Cemetery. He previously worked at the former Dingman Chevrolet of Carthage, and as a mechanic at Fort Drum. He also worked at Allen Boat Livery, Sackets Harbor.

Born July 28, 1932, in Carthage, son of Howard W. and Alice Wells Shettleton, he attended Carthage schools.

Mr. Shettleton served in the Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. He later was a member of the 127th Ordnance Co., New York Army National Guard, in Carthage.

He married Catherine May Meister on Nov. 25, 1961, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Belbin officiating.

Mr. Shettleton was a member of Elks Lodge, 1762, Bassett-Baxter American Legion Post 789 and the board of trustees of Sunnyside Cemetery.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Catherine Shettleton, Carthage; two brothers, Kenneth L. and Carlton L., both of Carthage; three sisters, Carol Schneider, Carthage, Shirley Kehoe, Watertown, and Linda Allen, Ogdensburg, and two grandchildren.

FINEVIEW -- Mildred M. Slate, 82, Wellesley Island, died Monday at Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown, where she had been a resident since Dec. 29.

She did seasonal work for the Ogden family on Wellesley Island for many years.

Born June 7, 1917, on Wellesley Island, daughter of Charles and Lucy Davis Harrison, she attended school on Wellesley Island.

She married Nelson R. Slate on Jan. 28, 1936, at the Fineview Methodist Episcopal Church, with the Rev. W. R. Carter officiating. Mr. Slate died on Sept. 24.

She enjoyed reading and knitting.

Surviving are a daughter, Marion Huntley, Fineview, and a granddaughter and great-grandson, both of West Virginia.

There will be no funeral or calling hours. Arrangements are with Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa.

Theresa -- The funeral of Irvin B. Schell, 84, of Theresa, was held Monday at Frederick Brothers Funeral Home, Theresa, with the Rev. Elaine White of Evans Mills Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Theresa.

Mr. Schell died Nov. 3 at Genesis HealthCare of New York, Watertown, where he had been a resident since 1994.

Surviving are his wife, Eunice; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Janet) Montford, Sackets Harbor; three sons, Donald, Pamelia, Earl, Fort Covington, and Lyle, Michigan; a brother, Eldon, Theresa; four sisters, Eileen Zimmer and Erma Schell, both of Watertown, Evelyn Skilton, Orinda, Calif., and Doris Gibson, Evans Mills; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was born March 30, 1911, in LeRay, a son of Newton and Bernice Brown Schell. He attended Theresa High School and the Watertown School of Commerce. He had been a director and vice president of the Farmers National Bank in Theresa.

He married Eunice Eddy on Aug. 23, 1934, at the Eddy family home in Kelsey Bridge, Theresa, with the Rev. Clarence E. Hastings officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Schell owned and operated the Spingledge Farm, Route 37, for 35 years until their retirement in 1970. The couple then bought the Eddy home, and resided there until 1989, when they moved to Milltown Elderly Housing, Evans Mills.

Mr. Schell was a member of the Eastern Milk Producers Cooperative since 1939, serving as a director of that organization for six years and as president for one year. He was an assessor for the town of Theresa for two years. He was also a member of the Adirondack Antique Car club, Evans Mills Methodist Church, and local senior citizen groups.

INA SLOAN

Hammond -- Ina I. Sloan, 72, Hammond, died July 17 in the State University of New York Health Science Center at Syracuse, where she had been a patient since July 2.

The funeral was held Friday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Edwards, with the Rev. Charles Richard, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Edwards.

She is survived by three sons, Bernard E. Jr., Edwards, John C., Hammond, and Robert E., Pierrepont; six daughters, Mrs. George (Beverly) Thomas, and Mrs. William (Joyce) Phelps, both of Edwards, Mrs. Harold (Marilyn) Mackin, Russell, Mrs. Richard (Janet) Cole, Harrisville, Rita Bello, Hunlock Creek, Pa., and Mrs. Michael (Ina) O’Ber, Star Lake; 28 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Arnold Morehouse, Gouverneur, LeRoy Morehouse, Tonowanda, Robert Morehouse, Edwards, and Wayne Morehouse, Portland, Ore.; and a sister, Mrs. Charlotte Jessmer, Salem, N. H.

Four brothers, Harold, Maynard, Raymond, and Earl Morehouse, and a sister, Mrs. Marion Vicente, died before her.

Born Oct. 16, 1917, in Massena, the daughter of John and Mary E. Piche Morehouse, she attended Massena and Gouverneur schools and married Bernard Sloan, Jan. 23, 1927, in the Gouverneur Methodist Episcopal parsonage with the Rev. Harold A. Thomas, then rector, officiating. She and her husband operated a dairy farm in Edwards for many years, retiring in 1977.

Mr. Sloan died Nov. 26, 1977, at the age of 61. Mrs. Sloan moved to Hammond to reside with her son, John, in 1982.

James R. Sweetman

Former City Man Expires

James R. Sweetman, 20, son of Mrs. Robert Hackett, of Snowflake, Ariz., formerly of Watertown, died Sunday in St. Joseph’s hospital, Phoenix, Ariz. He had been ill since December, and death resulted from a brain tumor.

The funeral and burial were to be in Arizona.

James Sweetman was born July 11, 1946, in Watertown, the son of the late Earl J. Sweetman and Mrs. Emilie Newman Sweetman Hackett. He lived with his family in Watertown at 118 Charles street, before moving to Snowflake five years ago.

He was the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. R. Fred Newman, of Adams.

He was graduated from Snowflake High school and was a student at Flagstaff (Ariz.) Junior college when he became ill.

WIFE OF PASTOR AT SACKETS DIES

HEART ATTACK FATAL AFTER SEVEN YEARS’ ILLNESS

MRS. JOHN C. STODDARD, 61

Wife of Presbyterian Pastor, Native of St. Johns, N. B.,
Suffered Heart Attack Friday -- She Was Married in
Boston in 1908 -- Funeral Service Wednesday.

Sackets Harbor, Nov. 29. -- Mrs. Henrietta McFadden Stoddard, 61, wife of Rev. John C. Stoddard, minister of the First Presbyterian church of this village, died at 5:35 yesterday afternoon at the family home here. Death was attributed to valvular heart disease and diabetes.

Mrs. Stoddard had been in poor health for seven years. Her condition became critical Friday when she suffered a heart attack, although she complained of illness the previous day, Thanksgiving.

Three years ago, while living at Theresa, she was critically ill and she never completely recovered from that illness.

Mrs. Stoddard was born at St. John’s, Queens county, New Brunswick, June 16, 1876, a daughter of the late John and Margaret McLaughlin McFadden. She attended school at St. Johns, was later graduated from Boston university and then attended the Colgate Rochester Theological seminary at Rochester.

She met Rev. Mr. Stoddard while both were students at Boston university and they were married in Boston, Oct. 7, 1908. Since then they resided at various places where Rev. Mr. Stoddard served. Rev. Mr. Stoddard is a former Baptist minister, being transferred to the Presbyterian ministry ten years ago.

For five years he served at Orange, N. J. He later was located for a similar period at Putnam, Conn., and was also at Rockport, Mass. for five years. After three years in Boston, he became minister of the Presbyterian church at Theresa and served there for eight years. Two years ago he came here from Theresa and has since been minister of the local Presbyterian church.

Mrs. Stoddard was active in church work and was a member of the Ladies Aid and the Missionary societies of the Presbyterian church here.

 

Surviving, besides her husband, are two sons, John C. Stoddard, Watertown, who is associated with the Howland Funeral chapel in Watertown, and Paul Stoddard of Sackets Harbor; four sisters, Mrs. Mary I. Scarlett, Salem, Mass., Mrs. Katherine Cooley, St. Augustine, Fla., Mrs. Charles Donald, St. Johns, N. B., and Miss Rida McFadden, Dorchester, Mass., and brother, James McFadden, Bangor, Me.

Funeral services will be held in the First Presbyterian church here Wednesday afternoon at 2:30. Rev. Joseph A. Schofield, jr., minister of the First Presbyterian church of Gouverneur, will officiate, assisted by Rev. Dr. Harry Westbrook Reed, minister of All Souls Universalist church at Watertown, and Rev. U. B. Grant, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church of Theresa. Burial will be in the Stoddard family plot in Brookside cemetery, Watertown. Trustees of the local Presbyterian church will act as bearers.

Maud Simpson Dies,
Stonecutter’s Widow

ALEXANDRIA BAY -- Mrs. C. Maud Simpson, 89, of 95 Walton St., widow of Frank Simpson, died suddenly Monday afternoon at her home.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Giltz Funeral Home, Rev. Arthur Horst, pastor of the Reformed Church of the Thousands Isles, officiating. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Violet Chavoustie, Nedrow; a son, Ralph Simpson, Alexandria Bay; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A brother died before her.

Born April 30, 1892 in Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Matthew and Annie Massey Stuart, she attended schools in Canada and continued her education at Goose Bay.

She married Frank E. Simpson Dec. 23, 1912, at Redwood. Mr. Simpson, a stonecutter who quarried material used in the building of Boldt Castle, died in 1977.

Mrs. Simpson was a member of the Reformed Church of Thousand Isles.

Alexandria Bay -- Helen T. Service, 86, 130 Church Street, died Jan. 8 at E. J. Noble Hospital/Samaritan where she had been admitted Jan. 6.

The funeral was scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 10 a.m. at St. Cyril’s Church with the Rev. Thomas Driscoll as celebrant and the Rev. Douglas Comstock as homilist. Burial will be in St. Cyril’s Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alexandria Bay Volunteer Fire Department or Friends of E. J. Noble Hospital.

She was born Oct. 16, 1913 in Clayton, daughter of C. Burton and Harriet LaLonde Tidd. She graduated from Alexandria Bay High School and, as a young woman, served as secretary at the Alexandria Bay Chamber of Commerce. She was correspondent for the Watertown Daily Times for many years, retiring in 1977.

She married R. Gareth Service of Alexandria Bay on Aug. 16, 1938 in St. Cyril’s Church rectory with Msgr. Armand Dussault officiating.

Surviving are her husband; a son, Robert G. Service, Alexandria Bay; two daughters, Mrs. John (Melinda) Comstock, Alexandria Bay, and Mrs. Hunter (Martha) Grimes, Redwood; five grandchildren, Amanda Service, Hilary Grimes, Hunter Grimes IV, Melissa Service and Marcy Service; one great-grandson, Trenton Service, and a brother, Allen Tidd, Alexandria Bay and Zephyrhills, Fla.

A brother, Dean Tidd, and a sister, Hilda Tidd Massey, died before her.

She was a member of St. Cyril’s Church and its Altar and Rosary Society, E. J. Noble Hospital/Samaritan Auxiliary, John B. Lyman Unit 904 American Legion Auxiliary, Alexandria Home Bureau, Save the River, and Alexandria Bay Ladies Golf League, and enjoyed sewing and crafts.

H. Foster Shimel

Ex-Dairylea Director Dies At 72

THERESA -- H. Foster Shimel, 72, Shimel Road, Orleans Four Corners, a well-known dairy farmer and long-time director of the Dairylea Cooperative and officer of Jefferson County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, died at 11:37 p.m. Friday in the House of the Good Samaritan emergency room, Watertown.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Frederick Brothers Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Donations may be made in his name to the LaFargeville Volunteer Fire Department or Emergency Corps.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Lingenfelter Shimel, a retired Theresa Elementary School teacher; a son, Lee, LaFargeville, R. D.; a grandson and granddaughter.

Born in Theresa, Oct. 25, 1911, a son of Floyd and Ruth Busler Shimel, he was graduated from Theresa High School and Cornell University, Ithaca.

After graduation, he joined his father in farming.

He married Eleanor Lingenfelter of Evans Mills in 1939.

After becoming a member of the Dairylea (Dairymen's League) Cooperative in 1947, he was named director of the Theresa local in 1956 and secretary-treasurer of the local in 1957. He was elected a director of District 10 in 1962 and served several terms.

Having been a member of the Jefferson County committee of the Agricultural Stablization and Conservation Service (ASCS) since 1956, he served several terms as chairman of the local unit and was named to the New York State Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee in 1969.

In 1967 he received the New York State ASCS award for outstanding service and performance.

He had met several times with federal administration officials, including former Agricultural Secretary Orville L. Freeman and Earl L. Butz.

In 1963 he joined two other Jefferson County farmers, a St. Lawrence County Extension Service agent and 41 other New York State agricultural leaders on a 21-day European visit during which they toured farms in England, Belgium, Poland, Hungary, Germany and Russia.

The Shimel farm received a Century Farm Award in 1978.

Mr. Shimel, a former director and president of the Farmer's National Bank, Theresa, had served on the executive committee of the Jefferson County Farm Bureau, as chairman of the Agricultural Extension Service committees, and was a member of the New York State Farmers Home Administration committee, the Watertown and Gouverneur advisory committees of Empire Livestock, the Grange, Theresa Masons, and had served as a member of the LaFargeville Central School agricultural department advisory committee. He had taught agriculture nearly four years in a veteran's job training program.

IVAN STROUGH

Alexandria Bay -- Ivan E. Strough, 71, of 17 Crossmon St., died at Edward John Noble Hospital where he had been a patient since June 9.

His funeral was Monday in the Reformed Church of the Thousand Isles with the Rev. Joseph Bliss, church pastor, officiating. Burial was in Barnes Settlement Cemetery, Redwood.

Surviving are his wife Miriam; five brothers, William Strough, Lloyd P. Strough, Royal Strough and Sterling Strough, all of Alexandria Bay, and Theodore “Timmy” Strough, Miami, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Cora Dobbins, Alexandria Bay, and Mrs. Fred (Minnie) Maynard, Rock Falls, Ill., and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Strough was born Dec. 26, 1913, in Alexandria Bay, the son of Walter A. and Gennie L. Gaylord Strough. He attended school in Alexandria Bay, and worked for L. L. Britton Hardware for many years, and later for the Village of Alexandria Bay.

He was working part-time for the Thousand Island Bridge Authority at the time of his death.

He married Miriam Wagoner March 9, 1952 in Theresa.

MAUDE A. SHEPHERD

Alexandria Bay -- Maude Ada Shepherd, 77, of 61 Walton St., died at 1:50 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, in Carthage Area Hospital, where she had been a patient since Oct. 24. She had been in failing health one year.

The funeral was Thursday at the Frederick Brothers Funeral Home, Theresa, with the Rev. Winfred Daughen, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in Algonquin (Ontario) Cemetery.

Surviving are two brothers, Herbert E. Shepherd, Adams Center, and Lorne B. Shepherd, Brownville; a sister, J. Edith Shepherd, Watertown; a half brother, William E. Smith, Theresa; two stepsisters, Mrs. Donald (Marion) Huddleston, Philadelphia, and Mrs. Joseph (Lois) Cooke, Gouverneur; nieces and nephews and cousins.

A brother, Russell Shepherd, three sisters, Mrs. Leslie (Dorothy) Jackson, Mrs. Carl (Alice) Pelzer, and Mrs. Peter (Bertha) Johnson, a stepbrother, Gordon Smith, and a stepsister, Mrs. George (Dorothy) Cooke, all died before her.

Born Nov. 12, 1912, in Algonquin, daughter of Lorne E. and Ada Bennett Shepherd, she moved with her family to the Evans Mills area at the age of 12 and was educated in a pink schoolhouse in the town of Leray. She then was graduated from the Remington Business School, which later became the Watertown School of Commerce.

For 33 years, she was employed by the New York Central Railroad in Watertown as a dispatcher for the whole engine crew and later as a clerk for whole freight office. She retired in 1963, and after her retirement moved to her present address.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Alexandria Bay, and a 25-year member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Mrs. Ruth Schell
Dies at Age of 76

PHILADELPHIA -- Mrs. Ruth Schell, 76, of 36 Sand St., wife of Clarence Schell, died Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the House of the Good Samaritan where she had been a patient since Sept. 28.

The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Frederick Brothers Funeral Home, with Rev. Catherine Salisbury, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Grove Cemetery, LaFargeville.

Calling hours will be at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John T. (Beverly) Phillips, Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., and Mrs. James (Mary Lou) Coyle, Rodman; two grandchildren, Mrs. Gary (Sherrie) Williams, Gouverneur, and Michael Bigarel, Prospect Park, N. J.; one sister, Mrs. Mary Hall, Philadelphia. A brother, Glen, died before her.

She was born June 30, 1908, a daughter of Howard and Lula Finney Whitford in South Edwards. She was educated in local schools.

She married Clarence Schell of LaFargeville, in Richville on Nov. 26, 1925. After their marriage they lived in the Watertown-Copenhagen area for a short time and then moving to Harrisville for two years. The couple then lived at Balmat for 33 years.

After Mr. Schell retired from St. Joe Mineral Co. the couple moved to Philadelphia.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Philadelphia, the Rebeccah Lodge, Philadelphia, and the Senior Citizens of Philadelphia and Antwerp.

Harold Shindler, Aged 48,
South Hammond, Succumbs.

Hammond, July 3. -- Harold Shindler, 48, died at his home in South Hammond Sunday morning at 10:15. He had been suffering a heart illness for the past three weeks, and had been a patient at the Noble Foundation hospital in Alexandria Bay prior to returning to his home a few days before his death.

He was born July 2, 1902, in Alexandria, the son of the late Bruce and Minnie Sourwine Shindler, formerly of Alexandria. He never married and made his home with his parents at their farm in South Hammond. He was a member of the Redwood grange and of the Hammond lodge F. & A. M. 861.

Surviving are his mother, and one brother, Herschel, also of Hammond.

Funeral services will take place Wednesday at 1:30 at the family home, with Rev. W. Halbert Campbell, pastor of the Presbyterian church of Hammond, officiating. Masonic services will be held by the Hammond lodge. Burial will be in the LaFargeville cemetery.

Bearers at the services will be Edgar Gascon, Alvin Gascon, Lawrence Troop, Forrest Dygert, Stuart McCormick and Eugene Wall.

Doris Skinner
Dead at Age 61

THERESA -- Miss Doris M. Skinner, 61, Alexandria Bay, died Sunday afternoon at the E. J. Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay. She had been in failing health for a year.

The funeral will be private from the Frederick Brothers Funeral Home in Theresa on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with Rev. Henry Meyerdierks officiating. There are no calling hours. Spring burial will be in Redwood Cemetery.

She is survived by several cousins.

Miss Skinner was born June 6, 1916 at Redwood, the only child of Earl and Clara Hoffer Berth (sic) Skinner.

She was educated in the Redwood area and moved to Alexandria Bay some years ago.

She was employed by the North Star Motel at Alexandria Bay, the Holiday Inn on the Clayton Road, and the Mel Marine Motel In the Clayton area.

HAROLD L. STEELE

Alexandria Bay -- Harold L. Steele, 76, of 12 Rock St., Alexandria Bay, a retired post office employe, died early Friday morning at Edward John Noble Hospital here a few hours after being admitted.

The funeral was Monday at the Giltz Funeral Home with the Rev. Winifred Daughen, pastor of the Alexandria Bay United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Omar Cemetery Masonic services were conducted Sunday evening at the funeral home.

He is survived by his wife, Madeline, and a son, Lt. Col. Stephen B. Steele, Hickam Air Force Base, Honolulu, Hawaii.

Born Aug. 25, 1907, at Alexandria Bay, a son of Elton E. and Addie Larabee Steele, he was graduated from Alexandria Bay High School in 1927, and retired in July 1872 after 44 years service with the Post Office as a clerk-carrier.

He joined the Post Office July 14, 1928 as a substitute clerk, was appointed city carrier in July 1937 and was named clerk and dispatcher in October 1958.

He served two years in World War II at the Army Post Office in New York City.

Mr. Steele married Thelma B. Raymond, May 19, 1939, at Brasher Falls. Mrs. Steele, a former private duty nurse, died May 25, 1950 at the age of 40.

He married Madeline E. Case June 2, 1951 at the Reformed Church of the Thousand Isles.

A member of the Alexandria Bay Fire Department 33 years, he was a former president of the Alexandria Bay Rod and Gun Club, and an active member of the Masons.

In March 1977 Mr. Steele was named District Deputy Grand High Priest of the 17th Capitulary District of the Royal Arch Masons of the State of New York. Raised in Alexandria Lodge 297 on March 26, 1929, he was elected master in 1937, becoming, at the time, the youngest master of the lodge.

Active in Royal Arch Masonry more than 45 years, he was exalted in Theresa Chapter 149 on March 28, 1932 and served five terms as high priest. On Oct. 2, 1964 he was appointed Grand Representative of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of the State of Georgia in the State of Georgia in the Grand Royal Arch Chapter State of New York for a term of three years.

He was a life member of the Watertown Commandery 11 and the Media Temple AAONMS, a life member of the National Rifle Association and a member of the Alexandria Bay United Methodist Church and John B. Lyman Post 904, American Legion.
