LOIS TENNEY - 10-10-1989 (Date of Death)

Theresa-- Lois K. Tenney, 75, formerly of Theresa, died Oct. 10 at the Samaritan-Keep Nursing Home, Watertown, where she had been a resident for several years.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 21 at the Theresa Presbyterian Church. Contributions may be made to the Presbyterian Church or Theresa Rescue Squad.

She is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Marguerite Nicholson, Rochester, Mrs. Herbert (Korleen) Coombe, Dexter, and Mrs. Merrill (Fannie) Hunneyman, Redwood.

Two brothers died before her, Valentine Zimmer in 1961 and Henry Zimmer in 1984.

Born in the Town of Alexandria on March 26, 1914, the daughter of Louis and Sarah Dorr Zimmer, she was educated in the Town of Alexandria schools, and graduated from Alexandria Bay High School in 1930. She then graduated from Teacher's Training class, Antwerp, and in 1936, from Potsdam Normal School.

She was married to William Simonds Tenney on Aug. 28, 1941, in the Methodist Church of Alexandria Bay, with the Rev. Roger Williams officiating. Mr. Tenney died Aug. 7, 1972.

Mrs. Tenney taught for three years at the school on the Creek Road, near Plessis, for 11 years in Antwerp, and for 24 years at Indian River Central School, Theresa.

She was a member of the Theresa United Presbyterian Church and a member and past president of the New York State Retired Teachers Association.

Louella Van Horne

PLESSIS - Mrs. Louella Van Horne, 82, of the Thousand Islands Adult Home, former resident of Plessis, died Friday at Edward John Noble Hospital in Alexandria Bay where she had been a patient since May 6.

The funeral will be Monday at 9 a.m. at Frederick Brothers Funeral Home, Theresa, with Rev. Winifred Daughen of the Methodist Church of Plessis, officiating. Burial will be in Crary Mills Cemetery, Canton.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Thousand Island Chapter of the Eastern Star 154 will hold a service at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Donations may be made to the Plessis Methodist church.

Mrs. Van Horne is survived by one son, Wendell H., Pulaski; a grandson, Jeffrey and a granddaughter, Susan, both of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

She was born Oct. 9. 1902, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur (Blanche Slate) Andress on Grindstone Island.

 

She attended Clayton schools and moved to Watertown when she worked for the F. W. Woolworth company.

She married Royal L. Van Horne, of Canton, July 7, 1923, at the Church of the Redeemer, Watertown, with Rev. D. D. Waugh, officiating.

The couple lived in Niagara Falls for two years and then moved to Plessis and built Van Horne�s gas and grocery store, which they operated for 57 years.

Mrs. Van Horne was a member of the Methodist Church of Plessis, the Thousand Islands Chapter of Eastern Star 154 and the American Legion Auxiliary of the John B. Lyman Post in Alexandria Bay.

Funeral Scheduled for Wendell H. Van Horne

PULASKI -- Wendall H. Van Horne, 56, of 7382 Saline St., formerly of Plessis and Redwood, died Wednesday at the Veteran�s Administration Hospital, Syracuse. He had been a patient there since Nov. 19, 1986.

The funeral will be at 10 this morning at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Bennett, pastor of the Pulaski Wesleyan Church, officiating. A spring burial will be in Crary Mills Cemetery, Canton.

Calling hours were Friday at the funeral home.

He is survived by a son, Jeffrey, and a daughter, Susan, both of Florida.

Born in Theresa on May 20, 1930, a son of Royal and Louella Andrews Van Horne, he was graduated from Alexandria Bay High School and attended the General Motors Institute of Technology. He served in Korea as a technical sergeant with the U. S. Air Force Strategic Air Command.

A marriage to Shirley R. Bretsch ended in divorce.

He worked as an auctioneer for many years throughout Northern New York. He also was employed as a salesman for L. B. Smith Heavy Equipment, Inc., Syracuse, the RESCO Equipment Co., and Pettibone Eqipment Co., Utica, retiring in 1984 due to ill health.

Mr. Van Horne had lived in Pulaski for the past 14 years.

He was a member of the Plessis United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school. He was also a member and past commander of the Pulaski VFW Post No. 7289, the Pulaski AM-VET Post No. 89, the Redwood American Legion and Alexandria Lodge No. 297, R & A M.

Lloyd Wayne Van Ornum

MAN, 29, TAKES HIS OWN LIFE

DeKalb Junction, April 7 -- Lloyd Wayne Van Ornum, 29, was found hanged to death in a barn on the town road, three miles west of De Kalb, Monday at 11 a.m. Dr. Samuel Livingston, Madrid, St. Lawrence county coroner, ruled the man took his own life by strangulation.

Police said Mr. Van Ornum had been despondent over job worries. He was last seen by friends Sunday at 5:30 p.m. The body was discovered in a barn next to the burned-out house in which his parents, Lloyd and Jeneva Bigelow Van Ornum, and five of their children perished on March 1, 1958.

Mr. Van Ornum, a guest, Joyce Barden of DeKalb Junction, and five other members of the family at home at the time escaped the blaze.

Walter Larkin and Hugh McElhearn of the Canton state police detachment investigated after the body was found Monday. Dr. Hugh Inness Brown, Canton, was coroner�s physician.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the DeKalb Junction Methodist church with Rev. Allan E. Best, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Wayside cemetery, Richville.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Joyce N. Barden Van Ornum; four children, Laurel, 5; Lloyd W., jr., 18 months, and twins Eliza Jane and Lisa Jean, six months; three brothers, Deuard, DeKalb Junction, James, Gouverneur; Albert, Old DeKalb; three sisters, Miss Joy Van Arnum, Old DeKalb; Mrs. Vernon (Alberta) Bush, Lisbon, and Miss Jane Van Ornum, a student at Canton, A. T. I.; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Hazel Bigelow, Old DeKalb, and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Van Ornum, Gouverneur.

Mr. Van Ornum was born July 5, 1934, in Gouverneur, a son of Lloyd and Jeneva Bigelow Van Ornum. He attended school in the town of Canton.

On March 12, 1958, he married Miss Joyce Barden of DeKalb Junction in the parsonage of the Hermon Baptist church. Rev. David Stone officiated.

They lived in DeKalb Junction since their marriage.

GEORGE VAN TASSEL

Theresa -- George Van Tassel, 84, Phelps, formerly of Theresa, died Jan. 30 in his home after a long illness.

A memorial service was held Saturday at the Frederick Bros. Funeral Home with the Rev. Steven Becker, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in the spring.

Surviving are his wife, Iola; three daughters, Shirley A. Clark, Macedon, Juanita E. Van Tassel, Watertown, and Deloris M. Norsen, Phelps; a stepson, Steven G. Fisher, Shortsville; six grandchildren; a brother, David, Philadelphia; nieces and nephews.

Born June 17, 1906, in the town of Theresa, son of Charles and Ella Brown Van Tassel, he was educated in area schools. As a young man, he owned and operated the Van Tassel Coal and Oil Co. in Theresa for a number of years.

In 1952, he moved to Phelps where he was employed by the Newark Developmental Center until retiring in 1971.

Mr. Van Tassel was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Newark, and a 50-year member of Theresa Masonic Lodge 174.

Lois Ban Brocklin

EVANS MILLS -- Graveside services for Lois Van Brocklin, 87, Temple, Texas, formerly of Philadelphia and Evans Mills, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Evans Mills Cemetery with the Rev. Carolyn Berry, pastor of the Evans Mills United Methodist Church, officiating.

Mrs. Van Brocklin died Wednesday at the Bur-Mont Nursing Center, Temple.

The body was cremated. Arrangements are with the Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa.

MORTIMER VAN EPPS

Plessis -- Mortimer H. Van Epps, 77, Clear Lake Road, formerly of Watertown, a retired pattern maker, died July 25 at his home following a lengthy illness.

A memorial service will be held in the Emmanuel Congregational Church, Watertown on Saturday, Aug. 4 at 2:30 p.m., the Rev. Ron Farr, officiating.

Mr. Van Epps had donated his body to science.

Friends may call at the family home at their convenience.

Contributions may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County Inc., P. O. Box 677, Watertown, the Redwood Volunteer Rescue Squad or Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay.

Surviving are his wife, Anna May; two sons, the Rev. David A. Van Epps, Canton, and Timothy J., Fort Thomas, Ky.; a daughter, Karen A. Peters, Alexandria Va.; six grandchildren, and a sister, Ruth Alice VanEpps, Watertown.

Born Nov. 23, 1912, in Brooklyn, a son of Leroy E. and Mabel B. McClement Van Epps, he was a 1932 graduate of Watertown High School.

He married Anna May Miner, July 16, 1938, in the Emmanuel Congregational Church, Watertown, with the late Rev. Richard H. Bowen officiating.

Mr. Van Epps was employed as a wood pattern maker and draftsman for the Bagley & Sewall Co. and later worked for the New York Air Brake Co., both in Watertown.

The family moved in 1958 to Ohio where Mr. Van Epps went to work for the Marquette division of Curtis Wright Co., Cleveland. They later returned to the north country upon his retirement, making their home in Plessis.

Mr. Van Epps was a life member of Emmanuel Congregational Church, Watertown, where he served as deacon and trustee, and as treasurer for 16 years. In 1982 he was awarded the title of lifelong deacon.

Mr. Van Epps had also been active as a leader in the Boy Scouts and as a member of the Watertown Masonic Lodge.

GEORGE VAN BROCKLIN FUNERAL HELD WED.

Died Sunday Evening Following a

Long Illness. -- Burial Made in

Plessis Cemetery.

Funeral services for George Van Brocklin, 58, who died at his home located just outside the village on the Redwood road, on Sunday evening, were held from his late home on Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Roger F. Williams, pastor of the local Methodist church officiated and burial was made in the Brookside cemetery, Plessis. His death occurred following several years illness.

George Van Brocklin was born April 15, 1882, in the town of Antwerp, the son of Morgan and Delia Mallett Van Brocklin. While still a young boy he moved to this village with his parents and received his education here. He married Miss Margaret Jarvis and for the past 25 years they have made their home on a farm on the Redwood road.

He is survived by his widow; one son, Clifford G. Van Brocklin; one daughter, Miss Kathleen M. Van Brocklin; both of this place; two brothers, Arthur H. Van Brocklin of Pittsford; and Frederick of this village; two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Whitmore of Antwerp; and Mrs. Ella Williams of LaFargeville; and two grandchildren.

Gary Kevin Van Orman

INFANT SON DEAD

DeKalb, March 25. -- Gary Kevin Van Orman, four-day-old son of Deuard and Shirley Hunter Van Orman, Cooper�s Falls, died Monday in the Edward John Noble hospital, Gouverneur, of a lung congestion.

The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Denesha funeral home, DeKalb Junction, Rev. Allen E. Best, pastor of the DeKalb Methodist church, officiating. Burial will be in Wayside cemetery, Richville.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Murray Hunter, Hammond, and two brothers.

The child was born in Edward John Noble hospital, Gouverneur, March 19, 1964.

George Verotis, Ex-Air Brake Employe, Dies

CARTHAGE -- George J. Verotis, 60, West Street Road, a retired New York Air Brake employe in Watertown, died Friday at Carthage Area Hospital.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Bossuot-lundy Funeral Home followed by cremation. Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth W., and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was born Aug. 5, 1929 in New York City, a son of Peter and Myrtle Catlin Verotis. He was graduated from Redwood High School in 1948 and served in the New York National Guard 127 Ordinance in Carthage.

He married Ruth W. Wimmer on May 27, 1953 at the Church of the Transfiguration in New York City. He was employed by New York Air Brake for 34 years and was quality control manager when he retired in 1985.

He lived in Wyoming and Florida where he had returned from on Thursday.

He was a member of St. James� Church in Carthage, the Lowville Lodge of Elks in Carthage, the Rod and Gun Club and the Cedars Golf Club.

Aurelia Welsh

Alexandria Bay -- Aurelia Welsh, 90, formerly of 59 High Street, died Feb. 24 in the skilled nursing facility of E. J. Noble Hospital-Samaritan where she had been a resident since Sept. 22, 195.

The funeral will be held Thursday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. at St. Cyril�s Catholic Church, Alexandria Bay, with the Rev. Thomas Driscoll officiating. Burial will be in St. Cyril�s Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Costello Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alexandria Bay Volunteer Fire Department or Friends of E. J. Noble Hospital.

Born Feb. 28, 1906, in Alexandria Bay, daughter of David and Emma St. Louis White, she was educated at Alexandria Bay High School, and later was a waitress at the Monticello Hotel here for 20 years, retiring 30 years ago.

She married Leon J. (Joe) Welsh in June 1930 in Alexandria Bay. He died Aug. 6, 1979.

Surviving are a son, Douglas Welsh, Alexandria Bay; four daughters, Mrs. Peter (Geraldine) Millett and Mrs. Keith (Shirley) Irwin, both of Alexandria Bay; Mrs. Clarence (Melba) Kester of Littleton, Colon., and Mrs. G. Rondal (Josephine) Pendley of Ballground, Ga.; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a sister, Emma Andress of Alexandria Bay; and a brother, Joseph White of Alexandria Bay.

She was predeceased by a sister, Magdaline Welsh.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Cyril�s Church.

HORACE WILLIX

Alexandria Bay -- Horace G. �Hod� Willix, 81, of 47089 Dingman Point Road, died Jan. 27 at Hepburn Medical Center, Ogdensburg, where he had been a patient since Jan. 18.

Mr. Willix worked on the Thousand Islands Bridge when it was being built in the 1930�s, and built PT boats at Hutchinson Boat Works during World War II. He was then employed at Reynolds Garage for 27 years and Gionet�s Garage for 16 years and worked in the Green Thumb Program for 13 years, retiring Jan. 29, 1997.

Born July 21, 1916, in the town of Alexandria, son of Gordon and Clara Collins Willix, he attended Alexandria Bay High School and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps of Carthage in 1935.

He married Minnie Irene Tousley of Theresa on Apr. 17, 1937, in the parsonage of the Alexandria Bay Reformed Church with the Rev. Earl D. Compton officiating. The couple had always lived at Alexandria Bay.

From 1949 to 1954 he drove an eight-ball stock car at the Edgewood and Watertown Fairgrounds tracks. He had been a member of the Hopewell International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge 854 since 1939.

In 1938, he joined the Alexandria Bay Volunteer Fire Department. As part of its Wild Geese drill team, he won honors in a drill team competition at Lake Placid in 1943. He was still an active member at the time of his death.

Surviving besides his wife are three sons, Philip, Fargo, Lansing, Theresa, and George, Concord, N. C.; three daughters, Mrs. Emil (Louise) Terranova, Stuart, Fla., Mrs. Larry (Bonnie) Bartlett, Leicester, and Mrs. Austin (Mindy) Rolls, Alexandria Bay; six brothers, Frank, Arkansas, Victor, Alexandria Bay, Irwin, Mannsville, Danny, Lorraine, Bruce, Arizona, and Ronnie, Redfield; four sisters, Mrs. Russell (Rosline) Smith and Mrs. Harry (Margaret) Lambert, both of Florida, Mrs. Robert (Isabelle) Wolfe, Georgia, and Mildred Willix, Arkansas; 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Clara, a son, Paul, a brother, George, and a sister, Caroline.

The funeral was held Saturday at Frederick Brothers Funeral Home, Theresa, with the Rev. Alvin Mayo officiating. Spring burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery.

Donations may be made to the Wild Geese drill team of the Alexandria Bay Volunteer Fire Department or the Hopewell Lodge No. 854 IOOF building fund.
