Sheryl S. Williams, Plessis, Dies at Age of 46

PLESSIS -- Sheryl S. Williams, 46, Plessis, wife of Roy D. Williams, died Sunday morning at Edward John Noble Hospital-Samaritan, where she had been a patient since Feb. 25. She had been in failing health with cancer for the past year.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, with the Rev. John Klatt, of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Redwood Cemetery.

Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the scholarship fund of Alexandria Central School or to Hospice of Jefferson County.

Surviving are her husband, Roy; a son, Matthew R., Plessis; three daughters, Mrs. Stephen (Tricia K.) Wardell, Adams, Suzanne Lee Williams and Barbara Anne Williams, both of Plessis; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Stine, Plessis; two brothers, John D. Stine, Redwood, and James L. Stine, Plessis; three sisters, Mrs. Lon (Jill) Leech, Indiana, Mrs. Mark (Patricia) Cole, Batavia, and Mrs. Theodore (Chrisanne) Reiske, Oswego, and several cousins, eight nieces and seven nephews.

Born July 17, 1947, in Alexandria Bay, a daughter of Douglas and Hazel Zimmer Stine, she graduated from Redwood High School in 1965 and from Jefferson Community College, Watertown.

She married Roy Williams of Plessis on June 18, 1966. After their marriage, the couple lived in Plessis, where they owned and operated a farm.

Mrs. Williams was a member of the Alexandria Central School Board and was president of North Jefferson Health Systems.

Ex-Assemblyman’s Widow, Gladys Wilcox, Dies at 85

THERESA -- Gladys J. Wilcox, 85, of 226 Main St., widow of Orin S. Wilcox, former New York State assemblyman, died Tuesday evening at Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay, where she had been a patient since Sept. 1.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Frederick Brothers Funeral Home, with Rev. Steven Becker, of the United Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Theresa Emergency Corps.

Surviving are two sons, Donald E., Theresa, and Russell I., Theresa, executive director of the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Born in the Town of Theresa April 12, 1903, a daughter of Everett and Florence Hicks Eggleston, she was graduated from Theresa High School in 1922.

She married Orin S. Wilcox Aug. 15, 1922, at the Theresa Methodist parsonage, with Rev. A. E. Budd officiating.

From 1923 until 1932, the couple owned and operated the Food Shop Grocery Store in Theresa, which now houses the U. S. Post Office. After that, they owned and operated a hardware store until the late 1950’s.

During this time, Mr. Wilcox, a Republican, also served as Theresa town clerk and town supervisor and was first elected to the state Assembly in 1944, serving until 1965.

During his more than 20 years in the Assembly, he was responsible for the introduction of over 544 bills. He served 15 years as chairman of the lower house civil service committee and became a member of the New York State Civil Service commission in 1965.

He also became the first chairman of the State Lottery Commission, serving from Jan. 20, 1967, until his retirement Jan. 30, 1971.

Mr. Wilcox died March 3, 1986, at the age of 87.

Mrs. Wilcox was a member of the Theresa United Presbyterian Church, the Theresa Order of the Eastern Star, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was former vice president of the Jefferson County Women’s Republican Committee.

Elma ‘Jean’ Walldroff

LAFARGEVILLE -- Elma M. “Jean” Walldroff, 70, of 33327 Route 180, died Thursday afternoon at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.

Mrs. Walldroff was a salesclerk at Meyers Department Store, Greensboro, N. C., from 1947 to 1949, a billing clerk for Pilot Life Insurance Co., High Point, N. C., from 1951 to 1952, a vocal music teacher at LaFargeville Central School from 1966 to 1969 and at Alexandria Central School from 1970 to 1972, and vice president, secretary, and office manager of Walldroff Farm Equipment Inc. from 1973 to 1992.

Born Nov. 15, 1929, in Greensboro, daughter of Clay W. and H. Lillian Apple McInnis, she was a 1947 graduate of Pleasant Garden (N. C.) High School.

She then was a music major in North Caroline and completed four years of studies at Jefferson Community College, Watertown, and Potsdam State University College.

She married William A. Walldroff on Dec. 23, 1949, at Pleasant Garden Methodist Church with the Revs. R. F. Waugh, pastor, and R. A. Hunter, pastor of West End Church, Greensboro, officiating. Mr. Walldroff was town of Orleans supervisor for many years.

Surviving besides her husband are six sons, David R., W. Edward, Wendell C., Marcus A., Lawrence A. and Glenn A., all of LaFargeville; two daughters, Mrs. David (Deborah J. ) Schryver, Alexandria Bay, and Charlotte A. Walldroff, La Fargeville; three brothers, Clay W. McInnis, Elkton, Md., Robert McInnis, Emerald Island, N. C., and John McInnis, California; six sisters, Elizabeth Britton, Virginia Beach, Va., Theba Thornton, McLeansville, N. C., Mrs. Charles (Ellen) Wood, Mayodan, N. C., Rebecca House, Climax, N. C., Ruth Lemmons, Eden, N. C., and Theresa Pruitt, Pleasant Garden, and 17 grandchildren.

A sister, Roberta Brice, died in 1996.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at LaFargeville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Thana Kibbe officiating. A reception will follow at the church. Spring burial will be in Grove Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at TLC Funeral Home, Watertown.

Donations may be made to the LaFargeville United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or the LaFargeville Ambulance Fund.

LEE BOWLES HELD TODAY

Theresa, May 23. -- Members of the Theresa Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, with members coming from out of town, attended in a body the funeral services of Mrs. Chlevera Lee Bowles, held at her late home Thursday afternoon at 2, with Rev. Carl Worden, rector of St. James Episcopal church officiating.

The bearers were: Dr. E. J. Kelsey, Oscar Eggleston, Leonard Busler, Hobart Minnick, Harold Leeson and Lewis Fields.

Other relatives besides those listed in the obituary on Tuesday are: Dr. Amesbury Lee, jr., Houston, Tex.; Joyce Lee, San Antonio, Tex., Mrs. Clover Donovan, Redwood; Carlton Bowles, Evans Mills. She was the last of her family of brothers and sisters, a brother, Dr. Amesbury Lee of Pickrell, Nev., died a short time ago.

Pastor of Plessis M. E. Church Dies Suddenly of Pneumonia

Rev. John Bragg, pastor of the M. E. church of Plessis died very suddenly Thursday p.m. at Plessis of acute pneumonia. He was licensed to preach in 1879 at Brewster, N. Y., and joined this conference April 19, 1887. In 1889 he was ordained elder by Bishop Hurst and his appointments were Spragueville, Richville, Bucks Bridge, Constableville, Belmont, Colton, Norfolk and Plessis. He leaves a wife and three small children. The funeral will be held from the Methodist church at Plessis Sunday morning at 10:30 and Presiding Elder A. C. Danforth of this city will officiate.

Mrs. W. W. Butterfield

Redwood, Aug. 12 -- Mrs. Laura T. Butterfield, wife of Hon. W. W. Butterfield, died at her home in this village at a late hour Wednesday night. Mrs. Butterfield was one of the best known residents of this locality and had been a resident of this village for nearly 60 years having come here from Vermont. She was married to W. W. Butterfield, Aug. 6, 1856. Mrs. Butterfield was in her 80th year at the time of her death, and had been an invalid for the past ten years. She is survived by her husband, now in his 83d year, and one daughter, Mrs. C. W. Simons of Watertown. Mrs. Butterfield was a woman of exceptional strength of character, charitable, kind, unselfish, a good neighbor, and held in the highest respect by this entire community. The funeral will be attended from the late home Saturday afternoon at 2:30.

Dies of Heart Attack.

Theresa, Nov. 27. -- Miss Helen Bearup, aged 85, native of Theresa, and life long resident of this village, died at 12:45 a.m. today at her home on Main street. Death was attributed to a heart condition.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the home. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery, Theresa. Rev. John A. Flikkema, pastor of the Presbyterian church, is expected to officiate.

She was born Oct. 14, 1861, a daughter of the late David and Maria Lull Bearup.

Her father was the first president of the old Black River-Morristown railroad and her grandfather was the first merchant in Theresa.

She has no survivors, her sister, Miss Anna Bearup, last relative, dying Oct. 18, 1946.

Theresa, Oct. 21. -- Miss Anna Bearup, 79, died Saturday night at 9:30 at her home on Lane street, after an illness of about a year. Death was due to a heart condition.

Miss Bearup was born in Theresa, in the house where she died, on Aug. 11, 1867, a daughter of the late Davis and Maria Lull Bearup. She was educated in the local schools and was an artist, doing oil paintings and china decorating. Miss Bearup had traveled extensively in Europe, going abroad twice. She had traveled in this county and in Canada.

Her father, David Bearup, was the first president of the old Black River-Morristown railroad. Miss Bearup’s grandfather, Ebenezer Lull, was the first merchant in Theresa. Miss Bearup was the former president of the Hannahs class of the Theresa Presbyterian church.

Surviving her is a sister, Miss Helen Bearup, who lived at the family home.

BRETSCH FUNERAL HELD AT THERESA

Theresa, Feb. 12. -- Funeral services of Floyd Bretsch, 57, who died at his home in Gary, Ind., Saturday afternoon, were held from the Charles A. Giltz funeral home at 2 p.m. today. Rev. A. R. Ehman of the Presbyterian church officiated. The bearers were among those of his associates of former days and were William Cavanaugh, Wayne Van Allen, John Huddleston, Ernest Aiken, George Dickhout and Clarence C. Pierce.

Mr. Bretsch was a veteran of the Spanish-American war and a member of the Elks lodge of Gary. He had been ill 22 months, and his death resulted from a hemorrhage of the brain. His daughters are Mrs. Alma Shoemaker and Mrs. Marguerite Lalone of Syracuse. His sister, Mrs. Nellie Horner, also resides in Syracuse.

Mrs. Bretsch accompanied the body of her husband to his native town.

Mrs. Bretsch studied law in Gary in his brother’s office and after being admitted to the bar there opened an office. He was prominent in the political life of the city and for a time held a city office.

Former Theresa Woman, 66, Dies in Missouri

SEMI-INVALID FOR YEARS

Body of St. Joseph Resident Will Be Brought East for Burial Thursday in Native Town.

Philadelphia, Dec. 18. -- Mrs. Flora Pool Bolton, 66, native of Theresa and sister of Mrs. D. C. Rodenhurst, wife of Dr. Rodenhurst of this village, died early this morning in St. Joseph, Mo., after having been a semi-invalid for many years. Death was due to a complication of diseases. She was a frequent visitor here, her last visit being about a year ago when she was the guest of Mrs. Rodenhurst for several months, leaving for the west in May.

Mrs. Bolton was born in Theresa, March 27, 1856, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Zalmon Pool. Since 1880 she had lived in the west, with the exception of about six years spent in Theresa caring for her mother, Mrs. Cyrena Swan Pool. She was a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Zalmon Pool, who were among the early settlers of Theresa. The farm recently sold by her brother, Charles Pool, of Los Angeles, Calif., had been in the family for more than 98 years.

Surviving are her daughters, Mrs. Blanche Lamberton of St. Joseph; a granddaughter, Ariel Lamberton, aged 15 years of St. Joseph; one brother, Charles Pool of Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. D. C. Rodenhurst of this village; one uncle, Warren Swan of Evans Mills, and several relatives in the west.

Mr. and Mrs. Lamberton will accompany the body to Theresa, the funeral being held Thursday afternoon at 2 from the Giltz undertaking rooms, Rev. A. E. Budd of the Methodist Episcopal church officiating. Burial will be made at Theresa.

Redwood, Sept. 7.-- Mrs. B. M. Bert, wife of Peter Bert, undertaker and furniture dealer, died yesterday morning at 3:30. Several days ago Mrs. Bert suffered a stroke of apoplexy from which she never recovered. Wednesday two more strokes followed and she did not regain consciousness. Mrs. Bert has lived her (sic) many years and was loved and honored by all. She was an excellent woman in hime, church and community. She is survived by her husband and two daughters, Mrs. John Hotis, of Homer, and Mrs. Charles Donald, of Gouverneur. She also leaves three grandchildren and a host of friends.

Mrs. Bert was 59 years of age. The funeral service will be held in the Methodist church on Sunday at 10:30. The interment will be at Depauville.

On account of Mrs. Bert's funeral there will be no services in the Baptist church Sunday morning. The regular service will be held in the evening at 7:30.
