Miss Walradt left a carefully written account of her life, with her nephew, Orin Bates. Excerpts from the paper follow.

“Miss Walradt, last surviving member of her family, was born Oct. 18, 1863, in Theresa. She was the youngest of three daughters of Abraham Moyer and Clarinda Hoover Walradt. One of her sisters, Mrs. Louis (Ida A.) Herbison died Aug. 8, 1920. The other, Mrs. John S. (Frances C.) Bates, died Nov. 1, 1928.

“Miss Walradt was of Mohawk-Dutch descent. Her grandparents, both paternal and maternal, were pioneer settlers of Jefferson county. Her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hoover, came from Herkimer county in 1810; her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Adams Walradt, from Montgomery county in 1824. Both families settled about two miles north of Evans Mills in the section which later became known as the Dutch settlement.

“The first burial in the Hoover cemetery there was that of her grandfather, J. Adams Walradt in 1831. Miss Walradt’s parents were among the early settlers of the village of Theresa. Foot-wear at that time was custom made. Her father, a skilled boot and shoemaker, opened a shop in Theresa which he conducted for many years, having in his employ both skilled and apprenticed workmen.

“After her retirement she traveled extensively. She toured the United States and Canada and visited Alaska, West Indies, Mexico and South America. She spent five winters in Florida and one in California and one in New Orleans.”

E. M. WHEELER, THERESA, DIES

Watertown Daily Times, 9 July 1947

E. M. Wheeler, Theresa, Dies

Theresa -- Edward Milton Wheeler, 72, a former supervisor of the town of Theresa and long connected with the town board as a justice, died suddenly Tuesday afternoon at 4:15 at the Theresa hospital, where he had been taken by ambulance a half hour earlier. Mr. Wheeler, [who had been working in] his garden [earlier] Tuesday, stated that he was not feeling quite so well and two of his daughters, home on a vacation, urged him to visit the doctor, which he did at 1:30 Tuesday and returned home, saying he guessed he would take it a little more easy. At 3 he called that he was in pain and the doctor was summoned and he was hurried to the Theresa hospital where he died soon after reaching there.

He was well known in the county, for he was connected for a term of years with the county welfare office, with offices in Watertown. He covered portions of the county as an investigator. A year and a half ago he retired because of age and gave full attention to his large garden, where he raised prize strawberries and other fruit.

He was born in Theresa, 12 March 1875, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Milton Wheeler [Marietta Evans], at Hyde Lake. After completing his work at the Theresa school he took a course in the Rochester Business Institute. He was a teacher and taught at West Theresa and other places.

On 27 Dec 1899 he married Miss Madeline Simonds of this village, and soon after took over the operation of the Homestead Farm at Hyde Lake. Later he formed a partnership with the late F. L. Rowe to open a hardware store in Commercial street. He became a justice in the town and later supervisor. When he became connected with the county welfare he withdrew from politics, but was entering again, as his name was on the Republican petition for town clerk this year.

Besides his widow he is survived by four children, Harold E. of Denver, Col.; Mrs. P. C. (Eileen) Kelley, Freeport, L.I.; Mrs. W. G. (Kathleen) Shottafer [sp?], Utica, and Mrs. J. S. (Grace) Spargo, Boston, Mass. There are three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 8 at the home in Theresa. Rev. Myron E. Van Ornum, pastor of the Theresa Methodist church, will officiate, and burial will be in Oakwood [cemetery].
