Frances E. Wiswell

Mercy Hospital Retiree

CLAYTON -- Frances E. Wiswell, 91, formerly of Riverview Apartments, died at 4:45 a.m. Sunday at Genesis HealthCare, Watertown, where she had been a patient since Oct. 31, 1994.

Mrs. Wiswell was a secretary at the former Mercy Hospital, Watertown, and was a part-time housemother for hospital’s School of Nursing, retiring in 1970.

Born March 29, 1908, in Adams, daughter of Myron R. and Jessie Dening Palmer, she attended Adams schools and worked during her summer vacations waiting tables in the Clayton area.

She married Hiram B. Wiswell on Sept. 30, 1926, at Adams Methodist Church with the Rev. William A. Garner officiating. The couple moved to Clayton after their marriage and operated a tourist home on James Street. Mr. Wiswell, a boat builder and fishing guide, died May 19, 1962.

Mrs. Wiswell was a member of Clayton United Methodist Church and the Rebekah Lodge and a 57-year member of Colon-Couch American Legion Post 821 Auxiliary.

Surviving are a daughter and her husband, Jean E. and John N. Schafer Sr., Clayton; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A daughter, Norma L. Fulmer died Oct. 7, 1995. A brother, Myron R. Palmer, Jr., and two sisters, Mildred Buduson and Marjorie Marshall, also died before her.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 26 at Clayton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph A. DeGroote, pastor, officiating. Spring burial will e in Clayton Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with Cummings Funeral Home, Clayton.

LEON (PIVOT) WELSH

Alexandria Bay -- Leon (Pivot) Welsh, 72, of 43 Greene Street, Oxford, a native of Alexandria Bay, died Nov. 19 at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.

A memorial mass was held Nov. 23 at St. Joseph’s Church, Oxford, with the Rev. Douglas Cunningham as celebrant. Military honors were by members of Fort Hill Post American Legion.

Memorial contributions may be made to John B. Lyman Post 904 American Legion or St. Cyril’s Catholic Church, both in Alexandria Bay.

He was born June 31, 1927 in Alexandria Bay, son of Theodore and Magdalene White Welsh. He married Marka Cornwall of Alexandria Bay, who survives him.

He is also survived by his children, Karen and Greg Lobdell, Akron, Ohio, Cecile Welsh, Las Cruces, N. M., Bruce and Cindy Welsh, Peninsula, Ohio, Terry Welsh and Donna D’Amico, Stonington, Conn., Mark and Kathleen Welsh, Phoenixville, Pa., Teresa Welsh, Oneonta, and Evangeline and Tom Hart, Rome.

Als surviving are his grandchildren, Alicia Lobdell, Kayla Hart, Jacyn Hart, Courtney Welsh, Donovan Welsh, Mackenzie Welsh and Scott Welsh; his great-granddaughter, Lynnea Lobdell; his brothers and sisters, Katherine Welsh, Ida Silver, Patricia Welsh, Theodore Welsh, Richard and Diane Welsh, Virginia and Arturo Garza, Carol and Robert Shepard, James and Patricia Welsh, Mary and James Gaffney; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Una and Theodore Parker, an aunt, uncle and many nieces , nephews and cousins.

He had been a science and math teacher at Oxford Academy and Central School, Norwich City Schools, Johnson City Schools, and retired from Sherburne-Earlville Central School after 33 years of teaching.

He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Fort Hill Post 376 American Legion and also Norwich American Legion. He was an honorary member of the Oxford Fire Department, having served in the Niagara Hose Company. He was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association and the International Order of Old Bastards.

 

JESSIE WALTS

Depauville -- Jessie L. Walts, 17, Depauville, died Jan. 9 at SUNY Health Science Center, Syacuse, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident Friday in Depauville.

She was driving north on Route 11 in the Town of Clayton when her vehicle skidded on slush, went off the road and hit a utility pole. A passenger, April S. Fitchette, 17, was treated at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, for minor head injuries.

Born June 17, 1982, in Alexandria Bay, daughter of William K. and Wenda L. Darou Walts, she was a senior at Thousand Islands Central School, Clayton, and attended cosmetology classes at the Jefferson-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services, Watertown.

Surviving besides her parents of Depauville are a brother, Casey, Depauville; a sister, Emily J., Depauville; her paternal grandmother, Mrs. Richard (Bernice) Walts, Clayton; her maternal grandparents, William and Barbara Darou, Depauville, and aunts, uncles, great-aunts, great-uncles and cousins.

The funeral was scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Clayton, with the Rev. John Silver, pastor of St. Vincent de Paul’s Church, Cape Vincent, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

His Wife, Former Miss Anna N. Kimball, Is Among
Survivors--They Lived in Watertown Until 1897--
Body Will Be Brought to Theresa For Burial.

Word was received in this city Sunday morning of the death of Charles G. Yost, 77, former resident of this city and native of Theresa, at his home in Monrovia, Calif.

A telegram was received here by Mrs. Clarence A. Mack, 623 Sherman street, sister-in-law, which stated that Mr. Yost died Saturday at 6:45 p.m., Pacific coast time. Death was caused by an attack of angina pectoris. Mr. Yost had not been in good health for three years.

Charles G. Yost was born in Theresa, Aug. 26, 1859, a son of George E. and Evelyn Stockwell Yost. Mr. Yost passed his boyhood and early manhood in Theresa, where he worked for his father who conducted a dairy products business. His father was at one time a member of the state assembly from this district.

Mr. Yost married Miss Anna Kimball, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry N. Kimball, town of Rutland, in June, 1888. She survives him. The couple following their marriage lived in Theresa for some time and then later moved to this city to reside. They left this city in 1897 and moved to New York city where they resided until two years ago.

In April 1934, they left New York and moved to Monrovia, Calif., where they had since lived.

Mr. Yost is survived, besides his wife, by two daughters, Mrs. R. A. Swain, Monrovia, Calif.; and Mrs. Robert Mairs, Demarest, N. J. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Grace Yost Ostrander, of Theresa, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The body will be brought to Theresa for burial. Mrs. Yost will accompany the body to Theresa. It is expected that she will leave Monrovia today and will reach Theresa Thursday.

FUNERAL OF CHARLES G. YOST IS TO BE HELD ON SATURDAY

Theresa, Nov. 6. -- The funeral services for the late Charles G. Yost, native of this village, will be held at 2:30 Saturday afternoon at the Ostrander home, with Rev. Charles G. Cady, retired Presbyterian minister, officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery here.

The bearers will be Judge Henry J. Kimball, David Otis, Frederick H. Kimball, Norman Mack and Harry Y. Stone, all of Watertown, and Allen Ostrander of Theresa, all nephews of Mr. Yost.

A daughter of Mr. Yost, Mrs. Robert Mairis (sic), of New York, reached here at midnight after a hard run through the snowstorm all the way from Boonville.

 

FRED D. YOST DIES

Theresa, May 29. -- Fred D. Yost of this village died at 9 this morning at the state hospital in Ogdensburg following an illness, which had been serious for the past year. He was 46 years of age.

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Yost. His father was formerly assemblyman and supervisor and conducted the Yost bank in this village in which the deceased acted for a number of years as cashier. Mr. Yost was well known throughout this section.

He was twice married, his first wife was Sarah Holmes, of Redwood, a sister of the Homes brothers who conducted the transportation lines. By this marriage one daughter of Redwood, survives. Mrs. Holmes died a year and a half after the marriage, which occurred about 14 years ago.

Mr. Yost’s second wife was Sarah Evans, of this village, by whom he is survived. He is also survived by his parents, and one brother, Charles G. Yost, of New York city. The brother come (sic) home last Saturday, and was at the hospital when Mr. Yost died. One sister, Mrs. Grace Ostrander, of this place, also survives.

The funeral will be held from the Yost home at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Rev. D. D. Waugh, pastor of the Episcopal church, officiating.

Interment will be in Oakwood cemetery.

 

Delivan J. Young, Ex-Store Owner, Dies

THERESA -- Delivan J. Young, 83, lifelong resident of Theresa, died Thursday evening in Mercy Hospital, Watertown, where he had been a patient since June 22.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Theresa United Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Steven Becker, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Calling hours are 7 to 9 this evening at the funeral home. Members of Masonic Lodge, 174, F. & A. M., will conduct a Masonic service at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Theresa Emergency Corp.

Surviving are his wife, Eleanore; a son, Delivan Terry Young, Henrietta; a daughter, Mrs. Schuyler (Mary) Weaver, Philadelphia; seven grandchildren, and two brothers, Kenneth, Theresa, and Harold, Philadelphia.

A brother, Chase, died previously.

Born in Theresa on March 3, 1904< a son of Guy and Carrie Chase Young, he attended Theresa schools and was graduated from Theresa High School. He later was graduated from Central City Business College, Syracuse, in 1926.

He married Eleanore J. Houghton of Theresa, on June 1, 1936, in St. John’s Episcopal Church rectory, Cape Vincent, with Rev. William Barnes officiating.

The couple had lived at their present address all of their married life. Mr. Young was co-owner and operation of the former Hinman & Young Plumbing, Heating and Hardware Store, retiring 10 years ago.

 

WIDOW OF ABRAM YOUNG, 88, DIES

Theresa, Jan. 6. -- Mrs. Listie Cole Young, widow of Abram Young, 88, died at nursing home at Sackets Harbor this morning about 4:30.

Funeral services will be held from the Giltz funeral home, Theresa, Friday afternoon at 2. Rev. John D. Flikkema, minister of the Presbyterian church will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery. Only nieces and nephews survive.

Mrs. Young was born at Theresa, Jan. 24, 1859 a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alanson Cole, a pioneer family of the Hyde Lake region. She was married to Abram Young who died some 35 years ago. For a number of years she resided in the Young home, Riverside avenue. She was very active in the work of the Presbyterian church here, and a member of the former Hannahs class. When the Eastern Star was organized there 48 years ago she became a member soon after the organization and held an office for a long term of years, for several years being chaplain.

 

Bertha Mae Zoller, 77, Expires Saturday

Redwood -- Mrs. Bertha Mae Zoller, 77, widow of Ross Zoller, died Saturday afternoon at 8:15 at her home on Main street, this village, after an illness since October, 1962.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, May 14, at the Quincer funeral home, here, and at the Redwood Methodist church with the Rev. Harold H. Pennock, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Redwood cemetery.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Lewis (Gladys M.) Rogers of Utica; two grandsons, Robert, Redwood and David of Troy, and three great grandchildren.

Mrs. Zoller was born May 25, 1885, in Redwood, a daughter of Ransom H. and Hattie E. Crabb Rogers. She was a graduate of Redwood High school. After her graduation she taught at the Jewett’s Corners and Collins Landing district schools until her marriage to Mr. Zoller in 1905 in Redwood.

The couple made their home at the Zoller homestead on the Redwood-Hammond road. In 1917 they purchased the farm at Crystal Lake about a mile South of Redwood. From then until the death of Mr. Zoller, July 28, 1940, they operated the farm and the Crystal Lake summer resort. After her husband’s death, Mrs. Zoller continued to operate the farm and resort until 1950 when she sold out to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin MacAllister of Ticonderoga. She then came to live at her residence on Main street. She also was a school bus driver for the Redwood school district for twenty-five years until 1951.

She was a member of the Redwood Methodist church and the W. S. C. S.

Mrs. Zollers’s mother, Mrs. Hattie E. Rogers, lived with her daughter for 15 years until she died at the age of 104 in November of 1957.

 

Private Funeral Planned for David Zimmer

REDWOOD -- A private memorial service for David A. Zimmer, 56, a lifelong resident of Redwood, will be Wednesday at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, with the Rev. Steven Becker officiating. Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery.

Mr. Zimmer died Saturday at his home of a heart attack.

There will be no calling hours.

Donations may be made to the Redwood Rescue Squad or the Redwood Volunteer Fire Department.

Among his survivors are a companion, Jacqueline McDade, Redwood; a daughter, Mrs. Jeffrey (Jennifer) Papin, Redwood; a son, Jeffrey, LaFargeville; a grand-daughter; his mothers, Elizabeth Olin, Clayton; four brothers, Richard, Fayetteville, Darrel and Donald, Clayton, and Douglas, Chaumont; a sister, Mrs. Robert (Helen) Walts, Alexandria Bay, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Three brothers, Larry, Dean and Dennis, died before him.

Born March 30, 1938, in the town of Clayton, a son of Arthur and V. Elizabeth Delaney Zimmer, he attended Alexandria Central High School and served in the Army from 1962 to 1968

A marriage to Lynda Lee Skinner in 1962 ended in divorce.

Mr. Zimmer was employed by the town of Alexandria for several years and had been employed by Northern Asphalt Co., Watertown.

He was a 28-year member of Teamsters Local 687, Watertown, and was a former member of the Redwood rescue squad and fire department.

 

EILEEN ZIMMER

Theresa -- The funeral for Eileen F. Schell Zimmer, 85, of 816 LeRay Street, Watertown, was held Saturday at Frederick Brothers Funeral Home, Theresa, with the Rev. Rachel Roberts officiating. Burial was in the family plot in Oakwood Cemetery, Theresa.

Mrs. Zimmer died Dec. 16 at her home, where she was cared for by Hospice of Jefferson County.

Born Dec. 27, 1913, in the town of LeRay, daughter of Newton and Bernice Brown Schell, she was a 1932 graduate of Theresa High School.

She married John H. Zimmer on May 19, 1935, in Watertown with the Rev. C. E. Hastings officiating.

The couple lived in Watertown until moving in 1937 to the Hiram Schell farm on Pink Schoolhouse Road, town of LeRay. They operated the farm for 40 years until the death of Mr. Zimmer on Aug. 21, 1978. After his death, Mrs. Zimmer moved to the former home of her parents and grandparents at 816 LeRay Street.

Mrs. Zimmer was a member of Theresa Methodist Church until transferring her membership to Asbury United Methodist Church. She was an active member of Pamelia Grange and a member of the Jefferson County Pomona Grange and the state and national granges.

She also belonged to the Pisgah Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star, Evans Mills, the LeRay-Pamelia Senior Citizens, Pamelia Home Demonstration Group, Daughters of the American Revolution, Jefferson County Historical Society and Friends of Minna Anthony Common Nature Center, Wellesley Island, and bowled at Seaway Lanes.

Surviving are a son, John E., Theresa; two daughters, Mrs. William (Mary A.) Watt, Waukesha, Wis., and Mrs. William (Lucille F.) Pakarek, Pittsburgh, Pa.; a brother, Eldon Schell, Evans Mills; three sisters, Doris Gibson, Evans Mills, Erma Schell, Watertown, and Evelyn Skilton, California; several grandchildren, a great-grandson and nieces and nephews.

A brother, Irvin Schell, died Nov. 3, 1995.

G. HENRY ZIMMER

Plessis-- G. Henry Zimmer, 78, a resident of this community since 1969 and a retired farmer and Town of Alexandria Highway Department employe, died Feb. 28 at his home. He had recently suffered a heart attack.

The body has been donated to the Anatomy Department of Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse. Contributions may be made to the Redwood Ambulance Fund in Care of Carla Quincer.

Mr. Zimmer is survived by his wife, Lottie; a son, Paul, Plessis; two grandsons; four sisters, Mrs. Henry (Marguerite) Nicholson, Rochester, Mrs. Herbert (Korleen) Coombe, Dexter, Mrs. Merrill (Fannie) Hunneyman, Redwood, and Mrs. William (Lois) Tenney, a patient in the Samaritan Keep Home, and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Valentine, died July 16, 1961.

He was born in the Town of Alexandria, May 31, 1905, the son of Louis and Sarah Dorr Zimmer.

He attended Alexandria Bay High School and married Lottie A. Smith of LaFargeville on June 24, 1927.

The couple operated a farm in the Town of Theresa for six years, before moving to the Town of Alexandria, where they operated a farm until 1969. That same year, Mr. and Mrs. Zimmer moved to Plessis.

Mr. Zimmer later was employed by the Town of Alexandria Highway Department.
