DUTCHER Pedigree

My DUTCHER Family

My DUTCHER line emigrated from Holland to New York before 18 DEC 1654. The immigant ancestor, Wilhelm "van Heerden", is thought to be Wilhelm Janszen "van Heerden". "Van Heerden" is a reference to a small village in Gelderland, Holland.

Wilhelm did not have a surname. His grandchildren were dubbed "ye DUYTSER" and its variants, meaning that each was a "dutchman". "Ye DUYTSER" evolved to "DUTCHER" in the fifth generation.

My line continues from eastern New York to Connecticut to western New York to Michigan and on to California. The descendents of the original immigrant now live across the country, although there are still concentrations of DUTCHERs in New York.

Walter Kenneth Griffin published "The Dutcher Family" in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. This article was later reprinted as a monograph. It has served as the primary genealogy of the first four generations. Some births of the fifth generation are also included. You can view selected excerpts from "THE DUTCHER FAMILY".
