Our family is part of Clan FRASER of Scotland. The clan name is thought to go back to about 1060. Although the origin is uncertain, it is thought to come from French, related to the French work for strawberry, "fraises". My father told me FRASER meant "strawberry grower". Whatever the true derivation, the FRASER shield displays strawberry blossoms. A number of my FRASER relatives maintain a strawberry bed as part of a family tradition. Many of my female relatives adopt strawberries as a personal emblem.
The crest displayed on the right is the symbol of the FRASERs of Lovat. There are more than 80 family lines in the FRASER clan. Lord Lovat is the chief of one of those lines. My ancestors in North America have displayed this symbol in their homes and worn it as jewelry. My ancestor who migrated to Canada about 1840 said his family was from the Lovat FRASERs. That is possible, but it is also possible that we are of some other part of the clan. In 1742, William FRAZER married Ann PRATT in Monquhitter [pronounced "Monwhitter"] Parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The Lovat estate passed to Thomas Alexander FRASER of Strichen Parish in 1815. Strichen Parish is very near Monquhitter Parish. However, another nearby parish is Tyrie Parish. The FRASERs of Tyrie were related to the Philorth FRASERs. However we fit into the Clan, we are part of Clan FRASER. My ancestors lived in Scotland until the English "defeated" the Scots. Then some of the Scots were persuaded to relocate to Ireland, the English hoping that the Scots could help subdue the Irish. I don't know that we subdued the Irish, but my ancestors lived in County Armagh long enough for another generation to be born. My gr-gr-gr-grandfather, Samuel FRASER, was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and died in Co. Armagh, Ireland. One of his many sons, John, was born in Co. Armagh, moved to Scotland and migrated to Canada while Canada was still a British colony. He established our FRASER line in North America. Today his descendents live in several provinces of Canada and many states in the United States. |
