Diane's Genealogy

My TOWNSEND Family

John TOWNSEND was one of three brothers who migrated from Norfolk, England to New Amsterdam about 1640. For about 20 years the family moved around from New Amsterdam to Long Island to Providence Plantation in Rhode Island, and back to Long Island. In 1661 the family moved to Oyster Bay on Long Island, then a part of Connecticut Colony. There the family settled, and they lived in and around Oyster Bay, Long Island, during most of the Colonial period. The Townsend Society of America makes it's home, including a museum and a research library, in Oyster Bay, NY.

Christopher TOWNSEND, Sr., moved to what was then Dutchess Co., NY. The area is now a part of Putnam Co., NY. One of his sons, Christopher TOWNSEND, Jr., was the last TOWNSEND ancestor in our line to be born and die in New York. Christopher TOWNSEND, Jr. was born just after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, on 25 JUL 1776. He married and raised his family in Greeneville, New York. Later he moved to Somerset, Niagara County, New York. He and his wife died and are buried there. Several of his children moved west to Michigan.

His son, Samuel TOWNSEND, moved his wife and young family from Somerset, New York to Livingston County, Michigan in 1935. The rest of Samuel and Asenath's children were born in Michigan. One of his daughters, Nancy Matilda TOWNSEND, married Rev. Joseph Atwood DUTCHER in Ingham Co., Michigan. Matilda and Joseph raised their family in Ingham County, MI.
