EXCISE SEIZURE the
night of the 11th inst., Oliver Landreth, Esq., supervisor of excise,
accompanied by the Messrs. Larkin, Braithwaite, and Smith, Officers,
proceeded to the townland of Gortavale, near the village of Rock, county
of Tyrone, and succeeded in seizing a large size still at work. The
officers apprehended two men who were in the act of running from the
still-house, and also destroyed a large quantity of wash. The officers
in pro- ceeding to Dungannon with the still-head and worm and the two
prisoners, were met in a field which adjoins the land leading to Rock,
by a formidable party of men, who collected from the neighbourhood,
and were well supplied with deadly weapons, such as pitchforks, large
sticks, &c., and they demanded the prisoners, and would not allow
the officers to proceed further. The officers remonstrated with the
mob on the impropriety of their conduct, at the same time refusing to
comply with the request of giving up the prisoners ; but the populace
made a rush, and dragged the prisoners from the officers. They afterwards
succeeded in taking the worm from the revenue gentlemen, who, however,
were enabled to destroy the still. |
