Transcribed by Val HENDERSON Checked by Audrey FAWN Pages 512 - 513 ILSINGTON is a village and parish in Newton Abbot union, containing, by the census of 1861, 1209 inhabitants, and 7563 acres; in the deanery of Moreton, archdeaconry of Totnes, Diocese of Exeter, hundred of Teignbridge, East Devonshire; 5 miles north-east from Ashburton, 7 north-west from Newton Abbot, about 2½ miles west of the main road from Exeter to Plmouth, and on the eastern border of Dartmoor Forest. The vicarage, in the incumbancy of the Rev. Robert Lovett, had the tithes commuted at £300 per annum, with residence and 87A. 2R. 6P. of glebe land, and is in the patronage of the Dean and Canons of Windsor, who are the appropiators of the rectorial tithes, which were commuted at £340 per annum. The church is an ancient edifice, dedicated to St. Michael, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of nave, Chancel, north and south transepts, north and south aisles, and tower with five bells. The Independents and Wesleyans have places of worship here. There is a Parochial School for children of both sexes, which has an endowment left by Miss Jane Ford in 1663. William Candy, in 1727 left a farm at Hartford, the annual rent to be expended in the purchase of a coat, hat, shirt, and a pair of shoes for the poor men of the parish, except £1 for an annual sermon. There is also £20 per annum, which is applied in temporary relief to those suffering sickness or accident; and other small charitable bequests. There is an iron mine at work in the parish. The Duke of Somerset is lord of the manor, and he and Lord Cranstown, C. H. Monro, Alfred Lyons, James Woolly, and George Wills, Esqs., are the chief landowners. BAGTOR, BRIMLEY, HALFORD, COLD (EAST), PINCHAFORD, KNIGHTON, LIVERTON, and SIGFORD, are hamlets of this parish. HAYTOR VALE is also an hamlet, in which there are some extensive granite quarries.
