Contact.   Transcribed by Elizabeth Glover HOWARD Checked by Val HENDERSON   Pages 205 - 206   LUPPITT (or LUPPIT) is a village and parish in Honiton union, containing, by the census of 1861, 714 inhabitants, and 4293 acres ; in the deanery of Dunkeswell, archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter, hundred of Axminster, East Devonshire, 5 miles north from Honiton, 11 south from Wellington, 14 south-west from Taunton, and 20 north-east from Exeter. The vicarage, in the incumbency of the Rev. Geo. Watts Grainger, B.A., had the tithes commuted, in 1840, at £140 per annum, with the residence and five acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of the trustees of John Charles Helyar Esq. The rectorial tithes were also commuted at £150 per annum. The church is an ancient cruciform edifice, dedicated to St. Mary, consisting of nave, chancel, and transepts, with tower containing four bells. There is a National School for children of both sexes. W. H. Bernard, Esq., is lord of the manor, and he and George Potter Blake, Esq., and the Helyar family are the chief landowners. DUMBDON HILL, in the parish, presents some magnificent views of the surrounding country. SHAPCOMBE is a tything, and BEACON,1 mile east.
