Brent (South) Transcribed from - Morris and Co.'s Commercial Directory and Gazetteer. 1870 Please notify me of any errors.Contact.   Transcribed by Sybil CAMERON Checked by Val HENDERSON   Pages 461 - 463   BRENT (SOUTH) is a village and parish in Totnes union, containing, by the census of 1861, 1205 inhabitants, and 9374 acres; in the deanery and archdeaconry of Totnes, diocese of Exeter, hundred of Stanborough, South Devonshire; 5 miles east from Ivybridge, and 6 west from Totnes, on the South Devon Railway, at which it has a station, and on the banks of the river Avon. The vicarage, in the patronage and incumbency of the Rev. William Speare Cole, M.A.*, is valued at £975 per annum, with residence and 32 acres of glebe land, and is endowed with the rectorial tithes, with the exception of £20 per annum, which is paid to Christ Church, Oxford. The church is an ancient edifice, in the Decorated style, dedicated to St. Petrock, with tower and six bells, and is now under restoration. The Wesleyans and Independents have places of worship here. There is a school for children of both sexes, which has an endowment producing £13 4s. per annum, arising from land devised by John Wilcocks and Thomas Acland in 1733; and the Rev. Robert Bradford, in 1800, left an annual rentcharge of 20s. to purchase bibles for four poor children. There are also several other charitable bequests for the benefit of the poor. This was formerly a market town, but the market has long been obsolete. There are two cattle fairs held annually on the last Tuesdays in April and September. Rateable value £9338. This is a polling-place for the south division of the county, its district comprising Brent, Buckfastleigh, Dean-Prior, Diptford, Halwell, Holme, Ivy Bridge, Modbury, Morley, North Huish, Totnes, and Ugborough.
