Died

 Trugien - Wednesday, at 2 o’clock a.m., Edward Trugien, in the 85th year of his age. Funeral will take place from the Court Street Baptist Church Thursday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock.

Funeral

 The funeral of the late Edward Trugien took place from the Court Street Baptist Church yesterday afternoon. Rev. A. E. Owen conducted the service, assisted by Rev. Thomas Home. The following well known citizens acted as pall-bearers; Nathaniel Owens, Joseph b?urke, Wm. H. Niemeyer, James T. Borum, E. C. Brooks, John S. Stubbs and Joe Sam Brown.

Death Of An Aged Citizen

Mr. Robert Jones, an aged citizen of this city, died Monday night at his residence in Newtown. Deceased was over eighty years old. The funeral will talk place today.

Denby - On Sunday morning, January 12, Pauline G., aged 1 year, 2 months and 3 days, daughter of Joshua and Pauline Denby 

Denby – On Tuesday morning, January 14, Joshua, aged 3 years, 11 months and 3 days, son of Joshu and Pauline Denby 

Jones – On Monday evening at 8P.M., after a brief illness, Robert Jones, aged 79 years. Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend his funeral this Wednesday afternoon, at 2:30 o’clock, from the Court Street Presbyterian Church.

Death In Jail

A colored woman by the name of Kate Sheppard died in the city jail Tuesday night, where she had been confined for safe keeping about a week. The deceased was said to be very respectable before she had the misfortune to become insane.

 

Jan. 17, 1879 Friday

Death Of An Estimable Lady

We are pained to announce this morning the death of Mrs. Sallie E. Thomas, which sad event occurred yesterday morning at the residence of her parents on South Street. Mrs. Thomas had been a consistent member of the Methodist Church, and her death is a sad blow to her family. She leaves two small children, one, an infant only a week old. The funeral services will take place this afternoon from the residence of her father, Mr. John L. Thomas.

Funeral

The funeral of Rev. Reverdy Estill’s little son, Barnes Clagett, took place yesterday morning at 11 o’clock, from Trinity Church, and the services were largely attended by the friends of the family. The services were conducted by Rev. J. D. Powell, of St. John’s Church, Rev. O.S. Barton, of Christ Church, Norfolk, and Rev. Dr. Newton, of St. Luke’s Church, Norfolk. The remains were taken to Cedar Grove Cemetery for burial, and the following gentlemen acted as pallbearers. James F. Crocker, John Emmerson, O. V. Smith, Wm. H. Murdaugh and John C. Ashton. Sad Case Of Fever

The estimable wife of Mr. George W. Griggs died Sunday evening at her residence on Dinwiddie Street of scarlet fever, having been taken with the disease at 2 o’clock Sunday morning. Deceased was a member of Central Methodist Church.

 

Jan. 21, 1879 Tuesday

Sudden Death 

A young son of Mr. A. T. Culpepper was taken suddenly ill Saturday night of congestion of the lungs, and died Sunday night.

 

Jan. 22, 1879 Wednesday 

Funeral Service

The funeral service attending the burial of little Shands Culpeper, son of Alex T. Culpeper, Esq., took place yesterday afternoon from the residence of the parents on Washington Street, and was largely attended by friends and relations of the family. Rev. W. E. Edwards, pastor of Monumental M. E. Church, conducted the services, and the remains were accompanied to the grave by a number of the playmates of the deceased acting as pallbearers.
