Thomas BAILY Jr. married America CRAIL of Vermont, IL (Fulton County). According to Sarah Baily BARKER, Thomas and America had three sons, William, George Richard, and Alexander, two grandsons, Mark and William, and (as of sometime prior to 1936) one great grandson (name unknown) and a great-granddaughter Gretchen.

Thomas Jr. and Alexander were younger half-brothers of Evan BAILY of Illinois.

According to his obituary, Alexander lived part of his early life west of Brooke County in eastern Ohio, perhaps in Jefferson County, OH which borders Brooke County WV across the Ohio River.

1840s
At some time in the 1840s, Alexander came to Andrew County, MO. Whether he came down the Ohio, across the Mississippi, and up the Missouri Rivers or came cross country to this hilly and wooded area of western Missouri, I don't know.

On August 25, 1847, Alexander BAILY married Elizabeth GEORGE, daughter of Reuben (Jr.) and Nancy McCOTTER GEORGE, in Andrew County, MO, just northeast of St. Joseph, MO on the western Missouri border.

By the time their first child, Anna Mary "Molly" Baily, was born on September 20, 1848, Alexander and Elizabeth had gone back east to Ohio. One source said Molly was born near Wellsville, in eastern Ohio, at a trading post where the Yellow Creek joins the Ohio River in Jefferson County, Ohio, London Township. However, by the 1850 census for Jefferson County Ohio, the Baily's were listed in Saline township. They apparently stayed in Ohio for several years before returning to Missouri and Kansas, where they spent the rest of their lives.

Their only son, Thomas Baily, was born in November 1849 in Ohio.

1850s
Emma C. Baily was born, likely in Ohio, around 1852-54. Around 1854, the BAILYs came back to Andrew County, MO and then across the Missouri River to Doniphan County, KS. Elizabeth's parents and other relatives still lived in both of those counties.

Clara Baily was born in Andrew County, Missouri about 1855-56.

Amanda Gertrude "Gerty" Baily was born in 1857 probably in Doniphan County, KS. The same year, Alexander apparently bought land in Andrew County MO from his father-in-law, Reuben George.

Son and brother Thomas Baily died about 1859 before the 1860 census in Kansas, and is said to have been buried near Waverly, KS at a high spot near a church after turning south toward Waverly. However, this source also thought Thomas' name was Arthur, so this burial information may have actually been about Alexander's son from his second marriage.

1860s
Alexander bought land in Doniphan County KS in 1860. In 1861 he sold that land back to J.C. Williams, Elizabeth's younger sister Mary Jane GEORGE's husband.

Alexander enlisted as a Private on 14 May 1861 and joined Company I, 2nd Infantry Regiment Kansas on 20 June 1861. The Evan Baily history says Alexander "went to Emporia, Kansas during the Civil War disturbances." But one of Alexander's descendants, James Buck, was sure that Elizabeth Baily, who died in 1867, never lived in Emporia. The Baily's moved south from Doniphan County into the Waverly and Burlingame Kansas area, where they continued, at that time, to farm.

Eva Jane Baily was born September 30, 1865 in Kansas.

Elizabeth G. Baily was born March 20 1867 and her mother, Elizabeth, died. Elizabeth was buried near the Santa Fe Trail, in the Burlingame Kansas cemetery. Little Elizabeth only lived 20 days (April 10, 1867), and was buried with her mother.

Alexander Remarries
About the next year, Alexander married Eliza "Leta" Lockerman (per Buck) or Rambo (per obituary).

On September 30 1868, Alexander's oldest daughter "Molly" married Luther David Jacobs, M.D. Their first daughter, Anna Elizabeth Jacobs, was born July 5 1869. A few months after his first grandchild was born, in November 1869, Alexander and Eliza had their first child, a son, Arthur A. Baily.

1870s
When she was nearly 10 months of age, Anna Jacobs died May 10 1870 and was buried in the Jacobs' plot in Maplewood Cemetery in Emporia, KS. Alexander's fourth child, Clara Baily, died August 2, 1870 at age 14, just 3 months after her niece had died. She was buried in what would become the Cleaver's lot in Maplewood Cemetery.
