Jane McCOTTER GEORGE | Family History On November 15 1807, Enoch GEORGE was born in Monroe County West Virginia (while it was still part of Virginia) to Reuben (Sr.) and Ann HANDLEY GEORGE. When he was about 5, Enoch joined his parents, brothers, and sisters going down the Ohio River to land north of what is now Cincinnati, Ohio. Enoch grew up there on the hilly family farm land in Butler County, Ohio. Enoch had just turned 19 when he married nearly 18 year old Jane MCCOTTER in Butler County. Ten years later, in 1836-37, their growing family survived the illnesses (typhoid fever?) that killed Enoch's eldest brother Joshua, their father, Reuben Sr., step-mother, Esther, and young step-brother, Isaac, all within a period of months. Enoch and Jane moved their family across the state line to Indiana (to Green Co, IN?) from Butler Co about 1843. About four years later, they moved on farther west to join Enoch's brother, Reuben GEORGE, Jr., and his wife, probably Jane's sister, Nancy (MCCOTTER) GEORGE, who had already moved their family to Andrew Co, MO, just north of St. Joseph. Both families lived near the One Hundred and Two River, just east of the Missouri River, and farmed. Jane and Enoch's youngest known child, Emma "Kate" GEORGE, was born in 1851. In 1852 their two eldest children, AnnaRetta and Joshua James, both got married in Andrew County within 2 weeks of each other in November. In 1853, their brother Reuben Andrew married Mary Ann HOBSON. In 1855, Reuben and Mary Ann had Jane and Enoch's first grandchild, born in Whitesville, Andrew Co, MO. In 1857, Fannie George married George Colburn. Just across the Missouri River from Andrew Co MO, the Kansas Territory was opened up to white settlers in 1856, and Columbus City was platted May 25, 1857. That same day, 27 year old Joshua J. GEORGE's 48 year old mother Jane died, to be buried in Andrew Co MO. Enoch and several of his children's families moved across the river, from Andrew County, to homestead in Burr Oak Township, Doniphan County, Kansas. The 1860 census showed Enoch back in Missouri living with son Reuben Andrew GEORGE, Mary Jane his wife, and their family. During the early 1860s, Enoch sold land in both Andrew (MO) and Doniphan (KS) counties. Later, he bought lots in Amazonia, Missouri. By 1864, Enoch had married Matilda A. (last name unknown), perhaps in Kansas. She was in her 50s, born about 1807 in VA. In 1870, Enoch and Matilda sold their lots in Amazonia, and were living with son Isaac N. GEORGE and family in Lincoln township of Andrew County, according to the census. Matilda apparently died in the 1870s, since she did not appear in the 1880 census with Enoch. The census also indicated that Enoch had moved back to Platte township, living near the CLEMMONS (Jesse and his father Antony), Isaac N. GEORGE, and the ST.CLEAR's with whom Gertrude BAILY (Enoch's grand-niece) was living. Enoch died, aged 85, on December 13, 1892, and was buried in the McGlothlin cemetery in Benton township of Andrew County, MO, where several relatives and friends had already been, and would soon also be, buried.

Hiram, whose parents were from Kentucky, was a plasterer or stone mason. They apparently never had children of their own, but in various censuses had some children living with them, including: B. W. HUGHES, 1860 census, Doniphan Co KS Charles ATKISON, 1860 (Doniphan Co KS) and 1870 (Andrew Co MO) censuses Gertrude BAILY 1880 census, Andrew Co MO; Annaretta's cousin Clara (ST CLEAR? or BAILY?), (1875-?) 1880 census, Andrew Co MO

On September 8, 1858 in Andrew County, MO, Isaac married 17 year old Margaret SMITH. They had 7 children: Thomas Jordan GEORGE (1859-1860) Jane "Anna" GEORGE HUFFAKER (1861-1952) Ida Alice GEORGE BARBEE (1863-?) Ulysses J. Four years later, on July 19, 1877 in Andrew County, MO, Isaac married Mrs. Maggie Marian E. MAGEE (maiden name HOBSON). She had a daughter, Lily MAGEE, then she and Isaac had three more children: Mary Hiziah GEORGE (1878-1882) - Long Branch Christian Church cemetery Jesse E. (K.?) GEORGE (1883-?) Fanny K GEORGE (1886-1889) - Long Branch Christian Church cemetery Similarly to his younger sisters Fannie GEORGE COLBURN and Kate GEORGE ASHLEY, several of the children did not survive childhood, but others lived into their 90s. Kathleen Hash, in 2007, was tracking down an Isaac N. GEORGE who lived in Shawnee County Kansas. After he died April 1, 1909, he was buried at the Leavenworth National Cemetery. His niece, Fannie GEORGE, was a daughter of John F. GEORGE (d 1891 in Madison Co IN - Grovelawn Cemetery), Isaac's brother. This does not seem to be the same John E. GEORGE family of Andrew Co MO.

On November 5, 1857 in Doniphan County, KS, Fannie married George COLBURN. I think Fannie helped raise her younger siblings after their mother died when the youngest was 6. Fannie and George farmed in Andrew County, MO, and had 8 children: William Isaac COLBURN (1858-1859) Mary "Eva" COLBURN DEARDORFF (1859-1955) Elizabeth Jane COLBURN (1861-1860s) Jessie Ann COLBURN ELLIOTT (1862-1948) Thomas A. Apparently, Ezra died as a result of the Civil War, where he fought for the Union in Missouri.
His tombstone indicates he was born January 15, 1841 and was 22 years, 10 months, and 26 days old when he died. He is buried with other family members in McGlothlin Cemetery, Andrew Co, MO.

9. Nancy J (Jane?) George b 1847 IN d 1934 CO (87) m 10 Mar 1897 MO Thomas Gilmore ASHLEY b 1845 MO d 1906 CO (61) buried in Cory Cemetery, Delta Co, CO | Nancy J. was probably born in Green Co IN, and was about 2 when she moved with her parents to Andrew Co MO about 1849. As an adult, she owned land AND WAS A MILLINER ?? in Doniphan County, Kansas, across the Missouri River from where she grew up in Andrew County, MO.
Nearly four years after her younger sister, Emma "Kate" died on June 3, 1893 of TB, Nancy married Kate's husband, and helped raise her nieces and nephews. Most of them did not survive childhood, probably from TB. Nancy and Thomas moved to Delta County CO for a change in climate, where Thomas died in 1906. Nancy returned to the Andrew County area, but when she needed help, her family came and took her back with them to Colorado, where she died in 1934, aged about 87.
10. Emma "Kate" George b 30 Apr 1851 MO d 3 Jun 1893 MO (42) McGlothlin Cemetery, AndCo MO with some of her children m 30 Sep 1875 MO Thomas Gilmore ASHLEY b 1845 MO d 1906 CO (61) | Kate was born and raised in Andrew County, MO, the youngest child of Enoch and Jane GEORGE. Around the age of 20, Kate became a member of the M. E. Church. On September 30, 1875 in Andrew County, MO, "Kate" married Thomas Gilmore ASHLEY.
According to the Newspaper Gleanings of Andrew County MO, by McMackin (page 343), Kate and Thomas had 10 children, with 8 still living in 1893 when Kate died June 3, 1893, at Annaretta St Clair's house in Whitesville, MO. Kate and Thomas had been married 17 years. Her funeral, conducted the following Sunday from her home near Rush, MO by Reverend Kutzner (or Kinzer?) was attended in part by W. B. ALLEN, H. H. TILSON, and
Oscar and Mrs. (Fannie) COLBURN. Kate was buried near her parents and other relatives at the McGlothlin Cemetery. Kate and Thomas's last child, Nannie E. was born January 31, 1893. She was 5 months old when her mother died, and died herself 3 months later. Of Kate and Thomas's 10 children, only 3 (Roy, Marian, and Myrtle) are thought to have survived the TB that killed their parents and siblings. Kate was still living when the twins, Ralph and Roxie (1889-1891) had died. These were extremely hard times for the family. more...
