Grizel - .-. 2c.John and his brother, William, came from North Ireland in 1740, or shortly before, and landed at New Castle, Chester Co., Penn. They were a part of that great exodus of Presbyterians of Scottish descent who left their adopted country and came to America. It is probable that James Handley came with them. The Vestry Book of Cumberland Parish, Lunenburg Co., Pa. in 1751 contains the following entry: "Ordered that James Handley exempt from Parish Levies for the future. " This exemption was probably made because of old age, and seems probable that James was the father of John and William.
John and Grizel lived in Borden's Grant, 1751-1764, and then in the Cow Pasture River Valley as late as 1779. In the Greenbrier Co., West Virginia Court Records (Will Book #1, page 741) is the report of the appraisement of the estate of John Handley admitted to record, Greenbrier Feb. Court, 1810. This reads in part as follows; "We John Welch, William Handley (Wheelright), John Tuckwiller & James Arbuckle have attended at the house of John Handley and have appraised the personal property as follows to wit...". John Welch was the first husband of Sally Handley who later married John S. Wilson, and who was a sister of William Handley designated "Wheelright" to distinguish him from William Handley, his father, his first cousin and another cousin of the same name who lived in Monroe County, Va., twenty miles south. All four of the individuals who took part in this appraisement lived near Lewisburg, Va.
