Sep 03, 1890 7c.He was born in Greenbrier Co., W. Va. His parents moved to Bennett, IA, when he was a small boy and there grew to manhood. On beginning his independent career, he farmed in Carroll Co., but a year later moved to Adair Co., ten miles northwest of Greenfield, and purchased 160 acres in Prussia Twp. Subsequently, he bought an additional 80-acre tract and gave his time to the cultivation of his land. This farm was the family home until they move to Oklahoma. In early days, it was customary to clear the land of small oaks by burning it over. He preserved the trees on the area which he wished to use for pasture. Later he thinned the trees and they grew up to a fine stand of timber which became the favorite recreation ground of the community. The Handley Grove was the scene of an annual picnic for many years. He moved to Oklahoma in order for his children to have better educational opportunities. They purchased a small farm and established their new home near Tulsa, OK. The children became students in Kendall College, now Tulsa University. Two of his sons were members of the varsity team during their college years. Thus, he became interested in athletics, which furnished him a major diversion the remainder of his life. He was particularly interested in the football team and either attended the games or listened to the broadcast. Despite his advanced age, he remained active until shortly before his death. He kept informed through the newspapers and radio, and enjoyed books. He lived through four wars. While he was too young to have been a soldier in the Civil War, he remembered the conflict and had distinct recollection of the assassination of President Lincoln.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Kendall Community Church in Tulsa.
Eliza was born in Pennsylvania and died in Adair Co., IA. Lizzie and Richard were married in Ottumwa, IA, and spent their honeymoon at the World's Fair in Chicago. Lizzie and Richard are buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa, Ok.
