They were both born in Greenbrier Co., Va., and were married there by Rev. Joseph Pinnell. She was a daughter of Joseph McClintic, whose father, William McClintic, settled in Bath County, Va. in 1774. Robert and his family moved from Greenbrier to Missouri, in 1839, locating first near Wellington, later taking up 240 acres, five miles south of Aullville, in the southern part of Lafayette Co. At Robert's death, this farm was divided between his sons, Joseph and John. You will notice that Robert dropped the e from Handley. It was said that he did this because of distinction between some other Handley's that were from a different country, but a definite reason why he did it is not known as of now.

Elizabeth, "Eliza" was dau. of Absolom Neptune and Ann Samantha Brand. "Allie" was dau. of Alfred Ditto and Mary Elnora Biggs, Lancaster, Ross Co., Ohio. She moved to Rich Hill, Mo., in 1872.

"Bob" was born in Lafayette Co., Mo. He and his brother, Joseph Walkup, bought land near the present site of Rich Hill, Bates Co., Mo., and located there in 1969, farming and raising cattle. He farmed with oxen which he turned loose at night to graze on the prairie. John C. Handly, father of Bob and Joe, rode down horseback from Lafayette Co., at intervals to collect hogs raised or purchased by them for him. These he herded with the help of his gog, Ponto, to Rockville, Mo., for shipment to Lafayette Co., where they were fattened with his cattle. The hogs were paid for in land, an acre for a hog. Bob and his first wife started housekeeping in a log cabin with a dirt floor, but prospered and in 1883, built a large, two-story house. This home near Rich Hill, was sold in 1890, and a section of land purchased ten miles southwest of Rich Hill and five miles northwest of Metz, Vernon Co., Mo. He lived there the rest of his life, his children growing up around him in his home on top a hill overlooking his acreage. To the east, in a bluegrass pasture along Pryor Creek, could be seen the long troughs where the corn was put out to fatten the cattle. From the house, one could look to the south and east for twenty miles to Nevada, the county seat of Vernon Co. As each child grew up and finished his schooling, he was given a piece of land--80 to 120 acres, where he settled and raised his family. Bob was deeply interested in each child's welfare and took pains in advising and aiding when necessary.

Bob was a good business man, buying white-faced cattle which he grazed on a section of land leased near LeRoy, KS., later fattening them with grain purchased for this purpose, before shipping them to market at Kansas City.

He was ever a gentleman. As a stockman and shipper, his motto was to do business honorably. He cared not for style, but was plain both in words and dress. He was respected and held in the highest esteem by all.

Bob and his two wives were buried in Balltown Cemetery, Vernon Co., No. He was buried with Masonic ritual.
