Brief history of the Cove

One of the 1st recorded settlers was a man named McDonald (an old soldier from Scotland) who built a palisade and blockhouse there around the 1730’s. He made his living trapping and trading with the local MicMac Indians.

Around the 1760's, three Conrad brothers (sons of Nicholas Conrad), Frederick, Casper (Kasper), and George settled in the area after purchasing the old McDonald grant.

My GGGG grandfather Johann Frederick b 1765, d 1850, and married 6 April 1790 to Marie Elizabeth Schmidt moved to the area. Frederick was born in Petite Riviere and not long after his father Johann Heinrich Vogler* died, he moved to the Cove around 1801 or a few years later (having already bought land there in 1800 from Matthew Mosher). Eventually Frederick sold his land in Petite Riviere and Crousetown (200 acres in Crousetown) by 1810.

He received another 500 acres of land in the Cove area September 27th, 1817. They had 12 children and as most of Frederick’s sons were married, the Vogler name became well established in the area.

Gammon's Creek

Gammons Creek is in Halifax County and located east of Port Dufferin. There is a topographic map located at http://www.ns.ec.gc.ca/epb/sfish/maps/ns/high/ns110407.jpg . Have a look to the right of Port Dufferin and you will see Gammon Pond, and below that Gammon Creek (formally John Vogler's Shore) feeding into Quoddy Harbour. Further to the right there is Quoddy Harbour and right in the middle is "Vogler's Island".

Shipbuilding

Shipbuilding was a big part of life for many years in Vogler's Cove (mainly in the 1800's). Due to the ready supply of wood from one of the sawmills in Vogler's Cove, many schooners, barques, brigantines, dorys and punts were built. For a list of some 19 schooners (not all ships built) built in Vogler's Cove please click here.

Shipbuilding in Vogler's Cove

There was a newspaper story done about my grandfathers boatbuilding company (Victoria B.C.) in 1950, by the Victoria Times. I have posted the story (less the pictures) at vby1950.htm. The story was sent to me courtesy of the Times-Colonist Newspaper in Victoria B.C. The pictures were very black and hard to make out.

Mining & Geology

Drumlins - http://museum.gov.ns.ca/mnh/nature/nhns2/800/832.htm Drumlins are elongated hills that may have an elliptical tear-drop shape. They apparently occur between Vogler's Cove (at the mouth of Vogler's Brook) and Aspotogan. The LaHave Drumlins are the topic of this site. Being the result of glacier movement, the LaHave Drumlins are reported to have a northwest-southeast alignment. Offshore they appear as wooded islands.

Gold - http://www.gov.ns.ca/natr/meb/is/is01.htm There was gold mined in the Vogler's Cove area during the late 1800's and stopped in 1905. This site shows that 200 tons of rock was crushed and 43 fine ounces were produced. In Mill Village 1222 tons were crushed and 909 fine ounces were produced (during 1901-1935).
