Biography of Levi Smith Bassett

Levi Smith Bassett was born November 6, 1831 in Lime Township, Huron County, Ohio to Smith Bassett and Hulda Lee. He was the fourth of eleven children, having five brothers and five sisters. On March 19, 1857, when Levi was 25 years old, he married Mary C. Dull. There were three children born to this marriage: Emma Viola born in 1858, Martha Ellen born in 1862, and Anna Livona born in 1867.

On February 11, 1864, Levi enlisted to serve in the Civil War for a period of 3 years. He mustered into Company G of the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was 32 years old at the time. He mustered out August 14, 1865 at Augusta, Maine by order of the War Department. At some point in time, he also transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps.

Four years after Levi was discharged from service, his wife Mary died. She was only 30 years old. A little over a year later, Levi married his second wife, Mrs. Sarah A. Adamson Amerine. Sarah was the daughter of Thomas A. Adamson and the widow of Lorenzo D. Amerine. She was 28 years old at the time. There were five children born to this union: Augustus Levi born in 1872, Lillie Dell born in 1874, Bert Austin born in 1878, Edith May born in 1881, and Roy Earl born in 1882.

During Levi's time in the service, he received wounds from a cannon ball and suffered with these wounds after the Civil War. Levi Smith Bassett never regained his health and eventually died July 5, 1910 in Sandusky, Ohio. He was 78 years old.
