Andrew J. Bish was born in Greene County, Pennsylvania in 1834. For the majority of his life, he resided in Highland County, Ohio. He married Catherine Broadstone, the granddaughter of a Revolutionary War Veteran, Phillip Miller.

On October 5, 1861, Andrew enlisted into the Civil War for a period of one year. He was 37 years old when he mustered in as a private into Company E of the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He fought at the Battle of Cross Keys, Virginia and at Harper's Ferry.

Andrew J. Bish died from typhoid fever on October 20, 1862 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
