James Dean Bragunier was born May 15, 1843 in Washington County, Hagerstown, Maryland to Daniel Bragonier and Rosanna Horner. He was the youngest of five children, having two brothers and two sisters.

On February 25, 1864, when James was 21 years old, he enlisted in the Civil War to serve for three years. He enlisted in New Jasper, Green County, Ohio and mustered into Company C of the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry as a private. He later became a prisoner at Andersonville Prison and survived. He mustered out with his Company on July 28, 1865.

A little over six months after being discharged from service, James married Elizabeth Howe (Hose). They married on February 26, 1866 and thirteen children were born to this union: Sarah E. in 1866, Laura Lucinda in 1868, Louisa May in 1869-1870, Daisy Evers in 1870, Mary Jane in 1872, Thomas Martin in 1873, Tyron Edward in 1875, Nettie Virginia in 1877, Francis Florence in 1879, Emma Jean in 1880, Franklin C. in 1883, Clyde Leslie in 1885, and Bessie P. in 1886.

James Dean Bragunier died June 23, 1925 at 82 years of age. He was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown, Maryland.
