Biography of James William Brouse

James William Brouse
Company E
1830-1887

James William Brouse was born July 22, 1830 in Chippewa Township, Wayne County, Ohio. He was the fourth child of John William Brouse and Harriet Frederick. At some point in his life, he worked as a coal miner. His son, Charles, remembered his father coming home with coal dust on him and having shoulder length hair.

James married Sarah C. Snyder about 1862 in Chippewa Township, Doylestown, Wayne County, Ohio. Sarah was born January 9, 1844. There were eight children born to this union: Emory born about 1863, Clara May born in 1870 and died 1951, Cora born about 1873, John Ray born about 1875 and died 1924, Leona born about 1876, Norman born about 1878, Charles born in 1880 and died 1969, and Marion Dale born about 1882.

On April 12, 1864, James enlisted in the Civil War for a period of three years. He was a private in Company E of the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. During his time in the service, he was sent to Patterson Park General Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

James William Brouse died March 28, 1887. His wife, Sarah, died in 1939. There is a family plot in Woodlawn Cemetery in Wadsworth, Ohio where approximately thirty family members are buried. The headstones are too worn to determine which individuals were buried there. James, however, was buried in the Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Doylestown, Ohio.

A special thanks to Richard Brouse for contributing this information. James William Brouse was his great grandfather.
