Biography of Samuel W. Gordon

Samuel W. Gordon
Company D
1842-Probably After 1915

Samuel W. Gordon was born August 6, 1842 in Clarke County, Virginia to John Gordon (1799-1870) and Susanna Cooley (1796-1879). Samuel was the last or second to last born of nine children, having five brothers, two sisters, and one other sibling whose gender and birthdate are not known. His siblings were: James William born in 1824, Mary Ann in 1828, Joseph Franklin in 1830, John David in 1832, Robert Howard Thomas in 1835, George Harrison in 1838, Sallie Owen in 1840, and another sibling. Samuel had several differents occupations during his lifetime. In addition to being a farmer and a shoe salesman, he also served as a Justice of the Peace from 1889 to 1905.

In February, 1864, when Samuel was 21 years old, he entered into service for a period of three years. He served as a Corporal in Company D of the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Later, he transferred to the 168th Company, 2nd Battalion of the Veteran Reserve Corps.

Samuel married Ursula C. Waters in Harrison County, West Virginia. There were at least two children born to this union: John William and George Harry. George was born March 21, 1870 in Barnsville, Belmont County, Ohio. Ursula died on December 3, 1890. A little less than two years later, Samuel remarried. He married Mary A. Hoff on April 7, 1892. From this marriage, at least one child was born. She was named Helen Ursula, and thought to have been born on August 28, 1915, though this birthdate needs to be verified.

A special thanks to Susan Bowers Davis Dixon for contributing this information. Samuel W. Gordon was her maternal great great great uncle.
