Gilbert Holmes was born February 1, 1842 in Lafayette County, Ohio. His parents moved to Highland County, Ohio in 1857. On August 2, 1862, Gilbert Holmes enlisted in Company A of the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He served until November 10, 1862, when he was discharged on account of being taken prisoner at Harper's Ferry.

In the Spring of 1863, Gilbert's family moved to Illinois. On March 28, 1865, Gilbert re-enlisted. This time he enlisted in Company G of the 58th Illinois Infantry. He was discharged on March 28, 1866. He was in all the battles in which his Regiments were engaged.

On December 25, 1866, he married Lydia R. Snap, a native of Belmont County, Ohio. Four children were born to this union: M. Eva, S. Laura, Jessie C., and Walter A. In 1869, Gilbert Holmes came to this county [Warren County, Iowa]. In 1879, Gilbert owned a farm of 122 acres in Sec. 32, P.O. Schonberg and all were living.
