Biography of George Washington Kershner, Jr.

George Washington Kershner
Company G
1836-1898

George Washington Kershner, Jr. was born on February 22, 1836 in Carroll County, Maryland. He was the third child of George Kerchner and Sarah Bollinger. He married Rachel Jane Cook on July 30, 1859, and a year later they had their first child, Anna M. Kershner. During their marriage, there were a total of six children born to this union: Anna M., Isaac, Florence, George Franklin "Frank," Lovina, and Johan.

Sometime between August of 1860 and February of 1864, George Jr. and his family moved to Ohio. On February 11, 1864, when George was 27 years old, he entered military service. He was a Corporal assigned to Company G (Sharpshooters) in the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On June 15, 1865, George mustered out as a Sergeant at Camp Chase, Ohio by order of the War Department.

After the War, George and Rachel continued to grow their family in Beaver Creek Township, Greene County, Ohio where George worked in a grist mill. By 1880, they had moved to Butler Township, Montgomery County, Ohio where George owned and operated a saw mill. George, later in life, turned the operation of the saw mill over to his son, George Franklin "Frank" Kershner. The saw mill is now gone, but the family home still remains on Kershner Road in Butler Township, Montgomery County, Ohio.

George Washington Kershner died in September 1898. His wife, Rachel, moved to Vandalia, Ohio and died later, sometime after 1910.

[Note: Over the years, documents have spelled the family name two different ways - Kershner and Kerchner. Most of the records for George Washington uses the spelling Kerchner. His children and their descendants, however, use the Kershner spelling. Recent DNA testing through FamilyTreeDNA has proven there is no relation to the ancestral line Kershner/Kerschner/Kirschner spelled with an "s."]

A special thanks to Tom Kershner for contributing this information. George Washington Kershner was his great great grandfather.
