Biography of Wayman Lambert

Wayman Lambert
Company F
1843-1862

Wayman Lambert was born in 1843 in Virginia to Samuel Lambert (Abt 1799-1866) and Nancy Johnson (1809-Abt 1883). Originally, the family resided in Wythe County, Virginia. They moved to Gallia County and Mason County, West Virginia sometime between 1850 and 1860.

Wayman had quite a few siblings. He had at least three sisters: Barbara born in 1831, Elizabeth in 1834, and Hannah J. about 1840. He also had at least three brothers: Stephen born in 1829, Andrew in 1837, and Ephraim in 1846. He may have had additional siblings, but their names have not been confirmed at this time.

On March 24, 1862, when Wayman was 19 years old, he entered into service for a one year period. He mustered into Company F of the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry as a private. Wayman's brother, Andrew, also served during the Civil War. Andrew enlisted on February 25, 1865 and became a private in Company I of the 55th Kentucky Mounted Infantry. Andrew was promoted to Corporal and mustered out on September 19, 1865.

After serving in the Civil War for just under two months, Wayman Lambert contracted measles and/or typhoid fever and died on May 15, 1862 at a hospital in New Creek, West Virginia. His mother, Nancy, applied for his pension in September 25, 1864 as Wayman had never married.

It is interesting to note that Wayman Lambert's name is spelled differently on multiple documents. It appears that the handwriting was misread and was, therefore, transcribed incorrectly. He is listed as Wayman Lampert on the company roster, though pension records indicate his mother's surname was Lambert. Other government documents also indicate that his name was Raymond Lamberton. And lastly, he is listed on the Mason County death records as "Mary Ann Lambert."

A special thanks to Bob Manson for contributing this information. Wayman Lambert was his great great uncle.
