Biography of James Livingston

James Livingston
Company B
1825-1864

James Livingston was born March 1825 in Indiana County, Pennsylvania to Henry Livingston (1772-1858) and Nancy Bell Morton (1786-1857). James was one of six children, having two sisters and three brothers. His sisters were Margaret and Jane. His brothers were Henry, William Bell and David Ralston. James was said to have grey eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion.

On July 30, 1848, when he was 23 years old, he married Susannah Stockmiller in Blairsville, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Susannah was eight years his junior, being born March 15, 1833 in Byrne, Germany to Andrew Stockmiller and Anna Mary Huffman. There were at least three children born to James and Susannah: Mary Elizabeth in 1849, Margaret Ellen in 1850, and Mathilda in 1853. There may have been another son named John, too.

After being married almost 16 years, James enlisted at Wooster, Ohio into the Union Army. He entered into service February, 1862 as a Private in Company B of the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry for a period of one year. He was with the Regiment when it surrendered at Harper's Ferry on September 15, 1862. He mustered out with his company on November 10, 1862.

James, again, entered into service February 15, 1864 and re-enlisted with the reorganized 60th Ohio Regiment. He was in the same Company and served as a cook at Nye River. His brother, William Bell, was also serving with Company B of the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry at the time.

James was later wounded in action near Petersburg, Virginia in August, 1864. He was wounded by a fragment of a shell which fractured his leg requiring an amputation at the hip. The operation was performed in the field hospital and he died later that month on the Potomac on board the hospital boat, "The Connecticut."

James Livingston was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia in Section 13, Grave 6874. He was survived by his wife and several children. Susannah lived to the age of 65 when she died on March 26, 1898. She died in Wooster, Ohio and was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Lot 5, Grave 4 in the St. Paul's section.

Some of the above information can be found on the World Family Tree CD-ROM Volume 78, Tree 110. The submitter of the tree is not known at this time.

A special thanks to Harold Larson for contributing some of this information. James Livingston was his wife's great grandfather.
