Biography of Byron Long

Byron Long
Company I
1845-1891

Byron Long was born November 11, 1845 in Clermont County, Ohio to Elias Long and Sarah Ann Campbell. On December 27, 1861, Byron enlisted to serve in the Civil War for a period of one year. When he mustered in with Company I of the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, he was listed as a Corporal and 18 years old. According to census records, however, he would only have been 16 years old at the time. In August 1862, his older brothers, William and Miller, also mustered into the Company. They, however, were privates. On September 15, 1862, all three brothers were captured at Harper's Ferry, but later paroled. All three brothers were listed as mustering out with Company I on November 10, 1862.

A few years after being discharged from the service, Byron married Nancy Garrett. They were married on September 19, 1865 when he was 19 years old. They had at least four children: Ida May born in 1866, Roby (female) born in 1870 and died in 1891, Arthur H. born in 1873, and Miriam. Byron supported his family by being a carpenter like his brother, William.

Byron and Nancy were married for 25 years when Byron died from consumption on March 5, 1891. He was only 45 years old. He and his brother, William, were both buried in Jefferson Township Cemetery in Westboro, Ohio.

A special thanks to Ginny Doak for contributing this information. Byron's brother, William, was her great grandfather.
