Biography of Eleazer Miller Long

Eleazer Miller Long
Company I
1842-1895

Eleazer Miller Long was born January 17, 1842 in Brown County, Ohio to Elias Long and Sarah Ann Campbell. On September 4, 1861 in Brown County, Ohio, Miller married Martha Snyder, the daughter of Frederick Snyder and Mary Jester.

After being married a very short time, Miller decided to serve in the Civil War for a period of six months. Miller, who was 20 years old, and his brother, William, who was 24 years old, enrolled in Fayette County. They mustered into Company I of the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry as privates on August 31, 1862. His younger brother, Byron, had mustered into Company I as a Corporal about eight months earlier. Unfortunately, on September 15, 1862, all three brothers were captured at Harper's Ferry, but later paroled. All three brothers were listed as mustering out with Company I on November 10, 1862.

After returning home from the war, Miller and his wife, Martha, started a family. There was only one child born to this union: Elva on September 11, 1864 as Martha died in 1865. Martha was buried in Jefferson Township Cemetery. On July 30, 1865, Miller remarried. His second wife's name was also Martha. He and Martha Lovett were married in Clinton County, Ohio. There were four children born to this union: Sylvester in 1866, Cas. E. in 1868, Vernon in 1871, and Carrie M. in 1877. Miller died August 16, 1895 when his youngest was about 18 years old. He was buried in Jefferson Township Cemetery in Westboro, Ohio.

A special thanks to Ginny Doak for contributing this information. Miller's brother, William, was her great grandfather.
