Biography of William Long

William Long
Company I
1839-1873

William Long was born March 22, 1839 in Brown County, Ohio to Elias Long and Sarah Ann Campbell. On February 3, 1859, he married Ann Eliza Snyder, the daughter of Frederick Snyder and Mary Jester. William was 19 years old at the time. There were six children born to this union: Sarah Luella born in 1859, Byron in 1862, Ulysses Grant in 1864, Laura Nevada in 1866, Mary Ada in 1869, and William Everett in 1872. William supported his family by being a carpenter and a farmer.

After being married only 3 years, William decided to serve in the Civil War for a period of six months. On August 12, 1862, William, who was 24 years old, and his brother, Miller, who was 20 years old, enrolled in Fayette County. They mustered into Company I of the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry as privates on August 31, 1862. His younger brother, Byron, had mustered into Company I as a Corporal about eight months earlier.

Unfortunately, on September 15, 1862, all three brothers were captured at Harper's Ferry, but later paroled. Due to his health, William was actually sent home early and received his discharge papers there. Yet, all three brothers were listed as mustering out with Company I on November 10, 1862.

William's health suffered greatly after being in the Civil War and he was not able to reenlist. It is believed that he became ill due to exposure while trying to reach Harper's Ferry and that he didn't have time to adequately recover as they were constantly on the move. He died May 18, 1873 of consumption when he was only 34 years old. He was buried in Jefferson Township Cemetery in Westboro, Ohio.

A special thanks to Ginny Doak for contributing this information. William Long was her great grandfather and William Everett Long was her grandfather.
