Camp Chase        Apr 13 1864

Dear Wife

        I take a few minutes this morning to write a few lines to you I am well at presant I have not got any money yet for you I will come home as soon as I get my bounty I was at preaching last nigt I go every nigt that there is enny I am going to night if I am well I gave in my name as a member but I will have to confess that I am wicked but I am bound to do better the preacher asked all that was christian to stand up but I had to set still then he asked all belived that these that stood up were chistians to give him his hand I steped up and shok hands with him oh I felt guilty in my sines oh lizzy I am bound to serve god better than I have don well J. D. Bryan [Note: John D. Bryan was from Belmont County, Ohio. He enlisted in the Army on February 23, 1864 in Company C, 60th Ohio Infantry. This is the same day as Thomas Stephenson] is in a hurry to start and I have to come to a close I have wrote to you twise since I have been hom I received all of Thans and your letters and I got one from John Piper [Elizabeth Piper Stephenson's brother who was also serving in the Civil War] last wek no more at present
