Camp Chase        17 1864 [Note: think March 17 or April 17]

Dear Wife

        I have a good opertunity of sending these few lines with C. P. Wilson to you [Note: This may be Charles E. Wilson who was referred to in another letter.] I am well I hope you are the same I am glad that you have got to your selves once ________ I will try to get home when I get my other bounty. Colon (?) wanted me to come home now but I have not got enough money I can get home on half fair after we get organized but I can not tell when that will be we are just laying here doing nothing I sent Lorenzo [Thomas and Elizabeth's oldest son] a hankerchief I bought it here for my

self and I was a fraid that it would be stolen from me I had to buy a shirt this morning I paid ($4.00 or two ?) dollars for it my old one got so full of gray backs [body lice] that I burnt it it was wore out

        there was a funeral yesterday and one to day they had a band and drum ____________________________ untill they got out of camp it was a very sollem thing to look at they were from the hospital there is some goes to the hospital most every day I will write no more at present
