The Descendants of Thomas and Catharine Weatherly Descendants of Thomas Weatherly

Generation No. 1

1.  THOMAS1 WEATHERLY  He married CATHARINE December 08, 1761 in Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland, England.

Notes for THOMAS WEATHERLY:
GENUKI says:
"BERWICK-UPON-TWEED a county, parish, seaport and borough, is pleasantly situated on the north side of the Tweed, within half a mile of its confluence with the ocean, 337 miles north by west of London, fifty four south-east of Edinburgh, and sixty four north by west of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. From its position on the confines of England and Scotland, it is not considered to belong to either country, but to be a neutral town in the kingdom of Great Britain. .... The county or liberty of Berwick, forms nearly an equilateral triangle, whose sides are each about two miles in length, extending northward from the harbour's entrance to Lamberton grounds, and thence in a south-westerly direction to the Tweed, which forms the southern limit, whilst the sea and Berwickshire in Scotland, constitute respectively the northern and western boundaries. .... The parish of Berwick-upon-Tweed, comprises an area of 6,195 statute acres; its population in 1801, was 7,187; in 1811, 7,746; in 1821, 8,723; in 1831, 8,920; in 1841, 8,484; and in 1851, 10,294 souls. At the last mentioned period there were 1,384 inhabited houses, fifty-four uninhabited houses, and thirteen in the process of erection" [From History, Topography, and Directory of Northumberland, Whellan, 1855].

The date of birth of David Sr is attested to by his son from the family records.  The attachment of this Thomas and Catharine is conjectural, filling the bill, but not absolutely determined to be the correct parents.- VES.

Quite possibly the Thomas of this note!  See below.- VES.

A well proportioned Georgian oak longcase clock with gilded hood front and rear capitals and glass side windows.  Original gilded wood
finials.  An arched silvered engraved dial with a rare layout of the makers name to the arch and Berwick on the top corners.  Date and
seconds dials.  A fine quality 5-pillar 8-day movement striking the hours on a bell with a wooden pendulum rod to aid temperature
compensation.

Thomas Weatherly of Berwick is recorded in Baillies 'Clockmakers of the World' book as working 1770 - 1795.

Dear Mr Summers,
Thank you for your Email message.
I have located two Thomas Weatherlys and one John who were clockmakers in the Berwick area in Northumberland.
Thomas Snr was born in 1736, the son of Alexander Weatherly, and began his working life in premises in Gordon Square, Berwick.  Thomas married Cathy Weatherly in 1761 by whom he had two children, John (1763) and Sarah (1766) who died in infancy.  His wife Cathy died in 1770 and he later married Sarah (maiden name unknown) and they had three children, Cathy (1775), Thomas (1776, d.1778) and Thomas again (1780).  Thomas Snr died in Gordon Square in November 1827 at the age of 91.  John Weatherly, son of Thomas Snr was born in 1763, married Mary and had two children, Eleanor (1784) and Nicholas (1786).  John died in 1786.  Thomas Weatherly Jnr, also son of Thomas Snr by his second wife, was born in 1780 and seems to have moved to Belford around 1798 when he married Martha, daughter of Robert Richardson of Rothbury. ( this seems a very young age to be married when most apprenticeships did not end until the age of 21 and so he would not have been earning a wage until then.  One wonders if this was not a sudden unplanned wedding!).  They had four children, Jane Brown (1799), Thomas (1801), Eleanor (1803) and Isabella (1805).  There is no record of Thomas Jnr after 1810 so it is possible that he died around then or did he emigrate to America?
I am sorry that David Weatherly does not appear among this list but if Thomas Jnr did emigrate, then he could have had further children which would be unknown here.  Alternatively, his own son Thomas could be the father of David.
Looking at the style of the clock itself, I would say that it was made by Thomas Snr.
I hope this is of interest.
Yours sincerely,
Alan Midleton

Generation No. 2

2.  DAVID SR2 WEATHERLY (THOMAS1) was born June 14, 1779 in Berwick upon Tweed, County Northumberland, England, and died February 05, 1851 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  He married MARY (MOLLY) LAWSON February 09, 1806 in by "Rev." Mr. Smidt, daughter of JOSEPH LAWSON and CATHARINE/CATHRINE.  She was born May 16, 1784 in Wilmington, Delaware, and died March 09, 1866.

(Data provided by Jane Hamilton).

Jack Sterling thought the wife of David Sr., was Mary.  This may be, and Molly is a popular form.

Did your David Weatherly have any connection to the town of the same
name in Carbon Co., Pa.?  There WAS a David Weatherly living there in the
1840s, and the town changed it's name in his honor about 1848.  Prior to
that, it had been named Black Creek.  This David Weatherly was a clock
maker by trade, and while in the Carbon area, he served on the Board of
Directors of the Beaver Meadows RR.  He left the town before 1850, and
there seems to be some mystery surrounding that.  David relocated in the
North Mulberry section of Philadelphia by the 1850 census.  He was age
72 at that time, with a daughter Ellen listed as age 17.  Is this your David
Weatherly?
                                                 Jack Sterling

David Weatherly lived in Philly at least up to the 1840 census. ... Then,
sometime during the 40s, he headed north to Carbon Co., settling (I guess)
in the village of Black Creek. ... When the post office came in 1848, he made
the offer ...

                                                Jack Sterling

Weatherly was incorporated as a boro in 1863, at which time it held about
500 inhabitants, one church, and two schools.  Today, it's a very nice
small Pennsylvanian town of maybe 3500 (that's a guess).  Nice town, nice
people, lots of local history. - Jack Sterling

[Weatherly, PA:]

It was first settled about 1826 when Benjamin Romig built several small houses and a sawmill at the site.  It grew into a village that became known as Black Creek.  That name remained until 1848 and the establishment of the first post office. ... From John Koehler, historian of Weatherly, Pennsylvania:

April 10, 1999
Dear Mr. Summers:

Received your letter and questions you are looking for a few weeks ago.  Sorry for the delay but I could not find any record of why he [David Weatherly, b. 1778] left here or any family connections.  All we know here according to early records is that he was a director on the Beaver meadow Railroad & Coal Co. in Beaver Meadows, just about four (4) miles from Weatherly.  A charter for the building of the Beaver Meadow Railroad was granted in 1830.  The line was built from Beaver Meadow to Weatherly in 1836-37 and on east to the canal wharves at Lehigh River.  The shops were moved to Weatherly in the winter of 1839-40 and that is where David Weatherly appears in the community (at that time called Black Creek).  According to what we know of him, he was a master clock builder.  In 1848, he talked with the town officials about giving the town a town clock if they would change the name from Black Creek to Weatherly.  The town changed its name but he left but there is not record as to why he left.  Since they have found his clocks in different parts of the southeast, such as Philadelphia, President James Buchanan home in Lancaster etc. we assumed that there were more people do clock work for than the few residents who lived here.  His name never appears here except when Charles Schwab, who had married a Weatherly girl, gave the town a new three story 10 room school house as a gift to the community in 1901.  His wife placed a town clock on the top of the schoolhouse to fulfill David Weatherly's promise of a town clock, fifty (50) years later.
Sorry I can't help you anymore on his family and whereabouts.  I haven't been able to find anything else on him at all.  There is very little information available about Weatherly because it had very little population until the early 1870's.  My wife is a direct descendant of the founder of Black Creek (Weatherly) in 1825.  He was Benjamin Romig who owned 400 acres of timber here.  He sold it to the railroad company and moved west about 8 miles.  Our early records were the churches which the Presbyterian is the oldest, 1841.  Our only newpaper (a once a week publication) started in 1880 so Weatherly has very little on its early history.

You might find something about the Beaver Meadow RR in the State Archives, or maybe at the Hugh Moore Museum in Easton.  The BMRR was the first steam RR in Pa.  There should be some surviving records, and maybe there's mention of Weatherly in them.

First Baptist Church, Phila., (not to be confused with First Baptist of Germantown, First Baptist of Manayunk, nor First Frankford Baptist) is the first & oldest Baptist church in the city and was organized in 1698, meeting at Morris & Brewhouse, near Water & Dock Sts.  In 1697, they were invited to meet in the meetinghouse of the Keithian Quakers, just north of Christ Church.  They remained in the meetinghouse until 1856, when they removed to Broad & Arch Sts.  (source: Mildred C. WEATHERLY, D., watch maker, 81 N. 3d.
So, as late as 1839, David Weatherly Sr  was listed as a resident watch maker in Philadelphia.

There is a Marguerite Weatherly who attended Girls' High School in Philadelphia, and graduated in 1895.  She quite likely is some descendant of the Weatherly line, though how is not yet determined --

Dear Vince - Freddie and I were so excited to receive your mail. Tomorrow, Wednesday, we are going to the Archivist to verify some of the information about David and Thomas Weatherly. They were both Freemen of Berwick and all records of the male line are held there. Do you know what Freemen are? David Weatherly was the eldest son of Thomas and he was made a freeman on June 17 1800, when he was 21. He was a watchmaker and he resided in America. He must have come back to Berwick for this ceremony. According to the freeman records which are kept by the Archivist there were 3 Thomas Weatherlys. I will write again with more information.

Notes for MARY (MOLLY) LAWSON:
Died Intestate.  Son David Jr. in his letter to J. S. Benner& Co. from Philadelphia 125 Walnut Street on May 1, 1871, talks about the family genealogy and his roles as his father's estate executor and his mother's (whose estate was being considered in this letter.)

This is a possibility only.  Strong verification is needed, to determine if this is the same person, and if the data is correct:
Mary LAWSON
Sex: F
Event(s): Christening: 27 Jun 1784 Holy Trinity Or (old Swedes) Church, Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware

The above is verified by the following quote from a letter of David Weatherly, Jr., referring to his family record, left to him:
"Mary Lawson daughter of Joseph & Catharine Lawson was born 16th May 1784 in Wilmington State of Delaware."

Interestingly, this Mary, mother of Joseph, died about 2 months after her son, Joseph.- VES.

Marriage Notes for DAVID WEATHERLY and MARY LAWSON:

Generation No. 3

3.  JOSEPH LAWSON3 WEATHERLY (DAVID SR2, THOMAS1) was born November 01, 1806 in Pennsylvania or New York, and died January 29, 1866 in Buffalo, New York.  He married RUTH L. PERIT October 11, 1838, daughter of JOHN PERIT and MARGARETTA DUNLAP.  She was born Aft. 1805, and died November 28, 1842 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Notes for JOSEPH LAWSON WEATHERLY:
Joseph L. Weatherly died in Buffalo, NY, but he was buried in the family vault at Cleveland, Ohio.  Erie Street Cemetery.  Died of Erysipelas.

There is a Joseph L. Weatherly buried in Erie Street Cemetery in Cleveland, although the birth year is 1807, the death year in 1866.  He was the founder and first president of the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce from 1848 to 1863.  The records for Erie Street Cemetery are at Highland Park Cemetery 216-348-7210.  Hope this helps.

I know of Joseph Weatherly because I have been conducting tours in Erie Street Cemetery (and *many* others in Cleveland and Ohio) for many years and his is one of the Cleveland notables I include both on the tour and in a slide presentation.

The address of Erie Street Cemetery is 2291 East Ninth (formally called Erie Street).  It is located directly across from Jacob Field (baseball) between Erie Court and Sumner Avenue (If you ever plan a visit here).  The records are kept at Highland Park Cemetery.

The Cleveland Chamber of Commerce has been known as the Greater Cleveland Growth Association for many years.  They are located in the Tower City Center, phone: 888-304-4769 or 216-621-3300.  Joseph Weatherly's portrait is on the wall with all of the other past presidents of the Association.

Unfortunately, his stone stands alone, but there may be other unmarked burials.  If you would like to send me a private email with your address, I would be happy to send you a photograph of the marker, along with any other information I can find.

The INSURANCE BOARD OF GREATER CLEVELAND, which regulates the local insurance industry, was founded in 1846 by Joseph C. Weatherly as the Cleveland Board of Underwriters. At that time both the insurance companies and public were dependent on the integrity of the agent who quoted premiums based on his inspection of the client's premises. In an effort to improve public confidence in the business, the new board drafted a standard list of fire insurance rates for dwellings, businesses, and factories. Over the years the board provided information on all facets of auto, home, business, and general insurance and imposed strict standards on its members, eventually limiting its membership to agents of those companies which wrote policies exclusively through board members.- M. Day

[Note:  I have sent a correction to the above site, telling them his name was not Joseph C., but Joseph L. Weatherly, as his name appears in other references to this particular situation.- VES.]

The CLEVELAND FIRE DEPARTMENT evolved from the village's first firefighting organization, the Live Oaks No. 1 volunteer fire association, organized in 1829. Its equipment, obtained in 1833, was a hand-operated fire engine--an improvement over the cisterns and buckets used prior to that time. The city's first regularly organized firefighting company followed in 1834, when the volunteer company Eagle No. 1 was established. By 1835 there were 4 volunteer fire companies, including 2 engine companies, a hook-and-ladder company, and a hose company. The first chief of the volunteer department was Samuel Cook.  By 1853 the department had grown to include 8 engine companies and a hook-and-ladder company.  Piped-in city water was available for the first time to fight fires when the municipal waterworks opened in 1856. The ranks of Cleveland's volunteer firemen were depleted during the Civil War, with fully two-thirds serving in the armed forces. As a result, the city council authorized a paid steam fire department of 53 men in 1863. At that time the city owned 4 steam pumping engines and a hook-and-ladder. A fifth steam engine was purchased in 1864, and a fire alarm telegraph system was installed. In 1865 there were 167 fire hydrants and 75 reservoirs throughout the city.

The department grew steadily in personnel and technology in an effort to keep pace with the expanding city.  The city purchased its first piston pump fire engine in 1875, and 3 years later the department had its first aerial ladder. After newly appointed chief James Dickinson reorganized the 17 existing companies into 3 battalions in 1880, the first sliding poles were used, and 5 new engines and an extension ladder were added. But despite these strides, 2 disastrous fires in the FLATS caused widespread destruction in 1884. Much new equipment was bought as a result of these fires, including the department's first fireboat, the Joseph L. Weatherly, and the department experienced remarkable growth. By 1909 the department had over 500 men. In 1912 the first motorized apparatus, a 53-hp 6-cylinder pumper engine, was placed in service at the newly organized Engine Co. 34 on Ashbury Ave. By 1925, all companies were motorized. Also that year, the Training School Division of the Fire Department opened at its downtown headquarters.- Also taken from "The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History" which is online at:  http://ech.cwru.edu/

GRAVE FUNDS APPEAR, 50 YEARS LATE

By George Davis

Cleveland's Erie Street Cemetery finally received a fund, willed a
half century ago, to keep the grass cut on the grave of J. L. Weatherly,
founder and first president of the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce's
parent Board of Trade of Cleveland.
Mary Weatherly, one of his descendants, left the money when she died
in Philadelphia soon after 1900.
It was slow getting here because when it was ready to be sent her own
executor had died and his executors were told the cemetery soon would be
abandoned.
That was in 1907.  While the executors still waited to hear when the
graves were to be moved, the Chamber of Commerce set up a granite marker
on the grave in 1940.
Election had followed election.  The proposal to abandon the cemetery
had been crossed off and no one had remembered to tell them about it in
Philadelphia.
Provident Trust Co. in Philadelphia woke up a year or two ago and
wrote Cleveland.  Result of this inquiry is that the money finally has
reached Director Arthur Munson of the Department of Public Properties at
City Hall.
         PERPETUAL CARE
  It's $300, and an additional $22.50.
Meanwhile, the value of the Philadelphia estate has increased and the
directors have arranged for perpetual care of the grave in Cleveland.
Actually, the grass had been kept cut without regard to funds or lack of
them in Philadelphia.
The grave is topped by a white stone crypt.  It is so weathered no
carving on it can be read, but its shape makes it notable.
J.L. Weatherly was a produce merchant.  He boarded at the Angier House
and ate broiled snipe there when the Angier was known for its cooking,
best west of New York.
His office was at the dock where hotel buses met many small passenger
ships.  He opened a coffee depot there to sell coffee throughout all
this lake region.
But everybody preferred tea and the depot closed with tons of coffee
beans unsold.
Weatherly was a first chief of the fire department when volunteers ran
on foot with engines they pumped by hand.  Fire fighting was a sport and
rival companies fought with their fists.  The first local fire boat was
named Weatherly.
He was born in 1807 and came here in 1837.  In 1863 he left to head an
insurance company in Buffalo, died there in 1866.

Note that the following two directory entries indicate the PERIT and WEATHERLY households were only about 3 blocks apart, and hence, could well have been within courting range for Joseph Lawson Weatherly and Ruth L. Perit in the 1830's.- VES.

From a Cuyahoga County, Ohio, researcher came this great post:
I was given  a copy of the First Directory of Cleveland and Ohio City 1837-38... a year earlier than the lookup years Vincent Summers had requested but  I assume the following  is his Joseph Lawson Weatherly.

"Weatherly J.L. & Co. commission and produce merchants, Dock & River sts"

Another great post on a message board!

I have an 1865 Buffalo City Directory, prepared in mid to late 1864 and it lists:
Wetherly, J. L., secretary, Mutual Insurance Co., boarding at Bloomer's Hotel. The Hotel was on W. Eagle St. between Main & Pearl streets.
I know nothing about the company other than that it was located at 44 Main St.

This is fantastic.  It was actually after Joseph had come to Buffalo, and tells the details of his situation.  Supposedly he had come to Buffalo to *head* the company.  It makes one wonder why he was secretary, and not president or something.- VES.

In the 1867 directory, compiled 1866, the President of the Mutual Insurance Co. was F. S. Winston, indicating concord with the death date of Joseph Lawson Weatherly.  No listing at all for Joseph.  The company had been founded in 1842.- From a researcher on the Buffalo NY Rootsweb List.- VES.

Cleveland Ohio City Directory Data:

1859-60: WEATHERLY J. L., insurance, Oviatt's Block, bds. Angier House.

Loomis & Talbot's Cleveland Directory 1861:  WEATHERLY J.L., marine and fire insurance agent, 3 Board of trade rooms, b[oar]ds Angier House.

1863-4: Weatherly Joseph L. insurance agent, 3 Oviatt's Exchange, b[oar]ds Angier House

From Rick Fraas, and his lookups in Buffalo, NY:

1863: "Weatherley, J.L. secretary Mutual Ins. Co. b. American"

1864: "Weatherly, J. L. secretary Mutual Ins. Co 44 Main St. b. American" <- Below American

1865: "Weatherly, J.L. sec'y Mut Ins Co 44 Main St."

In other parts of the BCD are listings of Hotels:

"American, Main above Eagle" and "American,310 Main St" "Bloomers, 1 W Eagle"

Both of these addresses would place the hotels in the 9th Ward.  I researched the entire 9th ward in the 1865 NYS census and did not find a listing for him.  I'm sorry that's all I could find for you. [Note: Note sure why he was not listed.  Maybe a primary residence elsewhere?- VES.]

From: Cleveland, Past and Present: Its Representative Men p. 67

"Mr. Bradburn was in 1839 elected to the City Council from the Third ward.  As chairman of the Committee on Fire and Water he reorganized the Fire Department, which was then in a wretched condition, and, with the assistance of Mr. J. L. Weatherly, who was made Chief Engineer, and the aid of new laws, made it one of the most efficient of any at that time existing in the country.  As chairman of the Committee on Streets, at that time an office of much responsibility and labor, he rendered the city valuable service."

From Janet Friend:

Joseph [in 1860 census] was living in a place, the name of which appears to be "Angus" House, right next to Weddell House.  It appears to be a fairly upscale place because some of the other tenants were "gentlemen" .. he was listed as 53 years old and still gave "Insurance Agent" as his occupation.  The bad news is that his place of birth was listed as Pennsylvania. [Note: This is not bad news, as it was the expected place of birth, in all honesty, his father having spent essentially all his life in Pennsylvania.- VES.]

Janet also found:

She agrees that this likely is a mistranscription for J. L. Weatherly.

A date is listed by The Public Ledger of November 21, 1842 for Ruth L. Weatherly.  Although this could apply to a date of death for a child named this, it appears to refer in some fashion to the wife of Joseph Lawson Weatherly.  It is so entered *for now.*- VES.

Children of JOSEPH WEATHERLY and RUTH PERIT are:
 i. MARY4 WEATHERLY, b. Bet. 1839 - 1840; d. March 31, 1850, Superior Street.

As for Superior Street, it is currently now called Superior Avenue and runs thru Cleveland, east side of the river.  I work just a few blocks from Superior Avenue.- Michele A. Day.

Bill Pallatt, Jr., says that he has a copy of the marriage and death index of the Public Ledger newspaper of Philadelphia for the years 1844 to 1851, as published by the GSP.  It only gives dates and does not say whether the date is for a marriage or a death.  Here is an interesting entry: Mary Lawson Weatherly, 4-3-50.  This could refer to the Mary of this note, as a date of death.  The date I have assigned from another source is with a few days of this date.- VES.

 ii. ? WEATHERLY, b. August 1841; d. October 10, 1842, Cleveland, Ohio.

Notes for ? WEATHERLY:
This may possibly be Ruth L. Weatherly with a death date of November 21, 1842.  This date was found for a Ruth L. Weatherly in the Public Ledger marriage and Death Index.  It could also be the data for the mother of this unknown Weatherly.- VES.

 iii. J. W. PERIT WEATHERLY, b. October 17, 1842.

Notes for J. W. PERIT WEATHERLY:
Will Pallatt, Jr. provided:  Public Ledger Marriage and Death Index, L-Z 1836-1843 J. W. Perit 10/17/1842.  This may mean the date of death.   If so, it may also reflect a date fairly close to the date of birth.  It is listed, for now, as the date of birth.- VES..

4.  ISABELLA3 WEATHERLY (DAVID SR2, THOMAS1) was born Abt. 1810 in Pennsylvania.  She married JAMES SR REISKY, son of MR. REISKY and ?.  He was born Abt. 1805 in Austria.

Notes for JAMES SR REISKY:
Furrier.  Lived approximately (evaluation by Lani MacAniff) 1-1/2 blocks away from George Ralston Ayres family, including Isabella Reisky Ayres, the first cousin of James' daughter Isabella Reisky, at one point.- VES.

1859 Philadelphia City Directory lists: REISKY, James, furrier, 139 N 3d, h 136 N 8th- VES.

1850 Census 31 day of July 1850 Southward (this ward listing seems strange):
356 336 James Reisky 45 M  Furrier  Pennsylvania

            Mary Reisky        8 F
            James Reisky     4 M
            Anna Reisky        3 F

The above census listing shows James Reisky as being born in Pennsylvania.  Yet, here is an entry for a James Reisky, showing a naturalization being involved:

Nav. C. REISKY- He wrote music for the piano.  He wrote a letter to James R. Mead (apparently a close associate of Jesse Chisholm of Chisholm Trail fame), which is also located here.
*****************

JAMES R. MEAD, one of the founders of Wichita and one of the noted pioneers of Kansas, was a Vermonter, born May 3, 1836, and
at an early age showed his love for out-of-doors life. During his school days he read and dreamed of the Great American Desert, and in
the fall of 1859 started for the plains. For four years he traded with the various Indian tribes in the present State of Kansas, hunted
buffaloes and finally established a post on the Salina River, about twenty miles from its mouth. In 1861 he contracted his first marriage,
and two years afterward the couple moved from the trading post to the settlement at Salina, then growing into a village. Later, he
established a trading post at Towanda, farther west on the Whitewater River, and while residing there organized a great buffalo hunt
which first made him acquainted with the charming country at the mouth of the Little Arkansas. There he established a branch trading
post. During the Civil war the Confederates drove away the Wichita Indians who had occupied that locality, but Mr. Mead, as a Union
agent, kept them in hand and loyal to the Federal cause. In 1864 he was elected to represent Butler County and the lower house, and in
1868 was sent to the State Senate by the district comprising the four counties of Morris, Chase, Marion and Butler, together with all the
territory west of the state line which has since been organized into thirty-five counties.

After the death of his wife in 1869 Mr. Mead sold his trading post at Towanda and moved to a claim he had previously taken adjoining
Wichita, which is now a valuable part of the city. In 1871 he organized a company to construct the Wichita & Southwestern Railroad,
the first line to give Wichita railway connections, and, within six months had it in operation. For several years after locating in Wichita,
Mr. Mead conducted, an extensive trade with the Indians through his trading post, located near the mouth of the Little Arkansas. The
panic of 1873 found his business unduly expanded and, through the failure of the First National Bank which had extended him a large
credit, he was much embarrassed, but to secure the depositors of that institution turned over to them substantially all his property. During
the later years of his life he was virtually retired from business, although at the time of his death, March 31, 1910, he was vice president
of the Mead Cycle Company of Chicago, which he and his son, James L. Mead, had organized in 1895. The deceased was not only a
president and leading member of the State Historical Society, contributing many articles to its archives, but was an ardent student of
biology and ethnology, and for thirty years prior to his death an active member of the Kansas Academy of Science.

Bill Pallatt, Jr., says that he has a copy of the marriage and death index of the Public Ledger newspaper of Philadelphia for the years 1844 to 1851, as published by the GSP.  It only gives dates and does not say whether the date is for a marriage or a death.  Here is an interesting entry:  Weatherly, David L., 6-4-49.  This cannot possibly be a birth for the George of this note, but it could be a death.- VES.

Oddfellows Cemetery, on the north side of West Center Street, Madisonville, Hopkins County, Ky is the largest cemetery in Hopkins County.

The only Weatherly in the 1860 census is GEORGE L. WEATHERLY, age 44, a saddler, 6000, 2000, PA and HENRIETTA, age 25, KY and married within the census year. I do not have any other census records. But I looked in my Hopkins County Marriages Book from 1807-1868 and I find : GEORGE L. WEATHERLY married MARY ELIZABETH LYNN on July 23,1835 and on December 3, 1856 GEORGE L. WEATHERLY married LORINDA BONE.. Now is Henrietta the same as Lorinda??? Martha

Vince...  I have found out some info on the Oddfellows Cemetery.  When I mentioned the George & Henrietta Weatherly burial site the girl
there said "Oh I know right where it is... I walk 2 miles a day out here and go past it every day."  She gave me directions where hopefully I can find it.  My inlaws are buried in Oddfellows and I plan on going out in the next week or so to put up a new wreath on their graves.  When I do I'll attempt to find your Weatherly.  I do know that they are in Lot 38 in M-5 section.

For everyone else with an interest in Oddfellows, there are no real records prior to 1992 [yes, 1992], and then the records they do have
do not give anything other than who purchased the lots and no indication of who are buried in the lots.  So, if you are looking for Uncle John Smith and he happens to be buried in a lot purchased by a friend named Jones who graciously allowed him to be buried in his lot, there is no way to find him... no index.  There appears to be no rhyme or reason for the sections names either.  For instance, you would expect that everything within an area surrounded completely by a road would be section whatever but that isn't always the case and in some cases a road runs thru a section.  It was all very confusing.

What I did find out tho is that they have a copy of the HCGS cemetery book and when someone visits there and they help them find someone, she makes a notation in her copy of what lot or section they are in so although there are no real records I'm told that the cemetery book has been helpful in locating someone.  They do not however have time to look up info for everyone and do not want their phone number put on the county website.  ;-(

When I do go out there I'll talk with her again and see if maybe I can copy her notes from her copy of the book to my own copy.  She has also told me she has a small sketch of the cemetery that shows the various section names and she'll let me have a copy of it, however, the roads apparently are not marked on it so it still won't give a clear picture of where a lot is but should be better than no help at all.

They are hopeful that someone will take the time to walk the cemetery again and enter all the burials since this was done back in the 1960s.
What a job that will be for someone... or group of several.  Gosh... with a volunteer group of about 100 we could probably do the whole
cemetery in 2 or 3 days. <g>

Hi:

I have a little information that relates to your text.

It is well documented that the middle name of the Andrew Bone who married Mary Alexander was McCreary, sometimes spelled McCrary.  I have never before heard of the name Grealy, as given in your notes.

My grandfather, Dr. James Preston Bone, wrote in a letter to "Bertha":

"Lorenda C. Bone married George L. Weatherly of Madisonville, Ky. She soon died leaving an infant son which bore his father's name & both father & son soon followed her to the grave."

In another letter Dr. J. P. Bone wrote:

"Andrew M. Bone had two sons Hugh Andrew Bone, James Preston Bone, daughters Nancy Jane Bone Cardwell, Lorenda Crawford Bone Weatherly & Mary Louisa Bone"

Later in the same letter he recorded:

"Lorenda C. Bone married George L. Weatherly, had one child, both now dead."

From the Andrew M. Bone Family Bible comes the following:

"Lorenda Crawford Bone was born the 11 day of April 1828"

"George L. Weatherly and Lorenda C. Bone were married Dec. 3, 1856 by Rev. Thomas Young"

"Lorenda C. Weatherly departed this life Nov. 2, 1857"

"George M. Weatherly, son of George L. and Lorenda C. Weatherly was born Oct. 3, 1857"

"George M. Weatherly departed this life July 20, 1858 (age 9 mo. and 17 days)"

In his book on the Bone family Dr. Robert G. Bone lists a second son "Andrew" born "before 1857". From family records it is difficult to see how Andrew Weatherly could be the son of either Lorenda or George L.

Since they were married such a short time, and since there were no surviving children, I have not spent a great deal of time with the Weatherlys.

Jerry

Marriage Notes for GEORGE WEATHERLY and LORENDA BONE:
The Public Ledger lists only a date for Marriage and Death Index, L-Z 1836-1843.  This would appear to be a date of marriage.  This is so, because it appears George did have at least one child.- VES.

6.  THOMAS3 WEATHERLY (DAVID SR2, THOMAS1) was born Bet. 1821 - 1824 in Pennsylvania, and died Bet. 1875 - 1880.  He married MARIA ?.  She was born Abt. 1826.

Notes for THOMAS WEATHERLY:
There is a Thomas Weatherly listed as early as 1851 (maybe even earlier, but I only have the listing for 1840 before that, in which he did not appear-VES), who is probably the son of David Weatherly -- that is the Thomas of this note.  Here are the entries I show:

1851 Weatherly Thomas, salesman, 225 Marshall
1860 Weatherly Thomas, clerk, 233 Chestnut, 831 Marshall
1862 Weatherly Thomas, salesman, 115 Chestnut, h 831 Marshall
1863 Weatherly Thomas, importer, 15 Bank, h 831 Marshall
1864 Weatherly Thomas, merchant, 831 Marshall
1870 Weatherly, Thomas, com[mission] mer[chant], 217 Church, h 1019 Pine
1875 Weatherly, Thomas, clerk, 233 S 4th, h 1019 Pine  [William L. Weatherly, of Weatherly & Hoyt is also listed as living there]
1880 and on, no listing for this Thomas.

Assuming, then, that this is indeed the same fellow, it would place a probable death at 1875-1880.- VES.

There is a Josephine Weatherly listed in the house of George Ayres, b. 1818, and a niece, aged in the 1880 census as 26 years.  This would be consistent with a birth of 1854.  Thus Josephine could have been the daughter of either this Thomas Weatherly, or quite possibly of George Weatherly, if he married, etc.  The 1870 Census would indicate Josephine not at the home (probably) of George R. Ayres, if her father was alive.  Since Thomas was known to be alive until about 1875, she would have been at the home of her father.- VES.

7.  DAVID JR3 WEATHERLY (DAVID SR2, THOMAS1) was born September 1823 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and died Bet. 1900 - 1910.  He married MARGARET(TA) F. April 21, 1849, daughter of ? and ?.  She was born October 1823 in New Jersey, and died Aft. 1910.

Notes for DAVID JR WEATHERLY:
Of Philadelphia.

1900 Census shows David born either February or September 1823.  But since it says he was 76, as well as his wife, born in that year in October, it would seem that the correct date would be September, since the census was taken before September.- VES.

In 1900, David Weatherly Jr was living at: 2318 Spruce Street in Philadelphia.

The following statement, is, probably true, as received from an 1850 Census Index Lookup:

How have you been?  Maybe this is the father and son! [Note: Yes, that is the case.- VES.]

The 1859 Philadelphia City Directory says of David, Jr.  atty.   convey.  So, the above is the kind of attorney David, Jr. was.

The 1800 birthdate for this David Weatherly is based on a David Weatherly in LDS records for Philadelphia, PA.  Film # 1761110
This seems most unlikely, as a census lists differently:

Philadelphia City Directory, 1890

There were 2 Weatherly's besides David and family, in the 1860 Census for Philadelphia.  Quite possibly these may have been a nephew and niece, or perhaps even issue:
John C. Weatherly Philadelphia County, PA Page 299 20w.1d.Philadelphia
Rebecca R. Weatherly Philadelphia County, PA Page 952 4w.Wd.Philadelphia

There is, for 1910 Miracode PA Census, also another possibility!  This is it:
County: Philadelphia, Philadelphia  Enumeration District: 1037  Visit: 0128
Name: Marguerite Weatherly
Relation: (Head of House)
Color: W
Age: 54
Birth Place: Pennsylvania
Other Residents: Daughter Carol 32, Pennsylvania

It is purported that Joseph L. Weatherly, the uncle of this David, was born in New York.  If that is actually the case, then the David listed below could conceivably be the David of this note (until a full census decrees differently).
                                                                                        TWP
1860 WEATHERLY DAVID Chenango County NY 171 Norwich

Possibly and only possibly, this may refer to the David Weatherly of this note:

Date of death based on presence in the 1900 Philadelphia City Directory, but not in 1910, in which, however, was listed a Mrs. David.- VES.

Who is this Margaretta F Weatherly?  Bill Pallatt, Jr., says that he has a copy of the marriage and death index of the Public Ledger newspaper of Philadelphia for the years 1844 to 1851, as published by the GSP.  It only gives dates and does not say whether the date is for a marriage or a death.  Here is an interesting entry: Margaretta F Weatherly 9-12-51.  This does not appear to represent any date for the Margaretta of this note.  Who is it?- VES.

Marriage Notes for DAVID WEATHERLY and MARGARET(TA) F.:
This date, April 21, 1849 is only guessed at for cause.  The Public Ledger Newspaper of 1844-1851, as published by the GSP lists only the dates, and not the causes.  It would appear to be the marriage date, however, in view of the date of the firstborn.  Thanks to Will Pallatt Jr for providing this!- VES.

Children of DAVID WEATHERLY and MARGARET(TA) F. are:
11. i. JOSEPH LAWSON SR4 WEATHERLY, b. Bet. 1845 - 1854, Pennsylvania; d. Aft. 1920.
ii. HELEN "ELLEN" BLANCHE WEATHERLY, b. Abt. February 1850, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; d. September 12, 1851.

Notes for HELEN "ELLEN" BLANCHE WEATHERLY:
Census indicates (which was taken August 5th, 1850) that Ellen was 6/12 year old.  Born in Philadelphia, according to that same census...

Does not appear to be found in the 1860 Philadelphia Census...- VES.

There is a Helen Blanche Weatherly listed with a date of September 12, 1851 in the Public Ledger Newspaper 1844-1851 Roll.  It is a marriage and death index.  So it will be assumed to be her date of death, awaiting the full article.- VES..

A little snippet my sister sent me says the date of marriage for George Ralston AYRES and Ellen WEATHERLY was the same, but for the year, namely:  December 23, 1853.- VES.

Children of ELLEN WEATHERLY and GEORGE AYRES are:

Notes for ISABELLA "BELL" REISKEY AYRES:
One IGI entry on the LDS Online website lists Isabella as born the 25th, rather than the 26th.- VES.

Interestingly, this was found by Jane Hamilton in her lookup in my behalf about the name REISKY or REISKEY:

Year  Surname  Given Name(s) County State  Page  Township or Other Info   Database   ID#

The above address is only about 1-1/2 blocks from 11th & Spring Garden, which was a residence of Isabella Reisky Ayres and her siblings and her parents!  Guess is: Friends.  The marriage date of Ellen Weatherly Ayres and the birth dates of the children precludes this being a first marriage with a Reisky.- VES.

I drove by there today [9/8/2000] and all 4 corners of the intersection of 42nd & Chester have buildings there. All of these buildings have been there since at least 1910. The building on the Northwest corner (4201 Chester Ave.) was probably the Monterey if it was at that intersection.  As I thought, it is an apartment complex. It is 3 stories high and 1/2 a city block long. However, it does not have a name anywhere. It is not as well kept as the other apartment buildings (there are many!). The other apt buildings on the 4100 & 4200 block of Chester have there names engraved in the limestone fronts, but not on the SW corner. It appears as though it was filled in years ago.- Joshua Davidson

Could this be Aunt Nellie, my great-great aunt (according to my baby book, and penned in by my mother)?- VES
It begins to look like this is, indeed, my Aunt Nellie, even though I was born in 1948.  She would have been, at about the time I knew her, from 91 to about 98 years old.  Then she was gone. I remember Aunt Nellie in a photograph.  She looked ancient.  No one else seems to fit this bill, and I was told that Aunt Nellie was probably a born AYRES, and not by marriage, an Aunt of my grandfather Edward C. Hi again Vince,

So glad this was your family.  I rechecked the 1900 census again and thought you might want to know Frances (Fannie) was also listed as having 4 children, 3 living.  Helen was listed as born July 1879, Joseph Jr. as June 1882, and Phillip H. was born December 1895.  Glad to have been able to help.

Judy

Vince,

I rechecked the 1900 Census entry again for your Joseph Weatherly and the month could be read as either Jan or Jun 1882 for the date of birth.   If you have found an SSDI entry listing the birth month as Jan, I would say you have the correct person.  The more I look at the Census entry, the more I think it is Jan rather than Jun.

Good Luck to you,

Judy

Notes for HENRY AYRES:
Some sources call him Hiram Henry Ayres, etc., but I have no proof I can recall that he was anything but Henry Ayres.- VES.

Hiram Henry Ayres is listed on the Centennial Register Member Roll of the Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, on the basis of William Ayres, and his membership reference numbers on the website are 625 and 9280.- VES.

Apparently called "Harry" in the 1880 Census.

My grandmother, Adele Ayres, used to tell many stories about our relatives to me when I was young, and I remember hearing more than once of a relative who worked with gold leaf for a living.  Interestingly, I have dealt with gold most of my working life.  --Vincent E. Summers

Also, other relatives lived on Mt. Vernon.  The other Henry Ayres listed in the directory was Henry R. Ayres, a salesman in another location. Probably no relation.

There is a Philip H. Ayres listed at the same address as Henry!  And occupation, Printer!  Son? Nephew? Cousin?

Finally, I have been told that the building the firm Wright and Ayres existed in is still there!  As Milton Botwinick says...

Ayres, publisher had a building on Washington square that still stands [for sale now].  The company is still in business, headquarters at the Curtis Building on Washington square [across the square].

Later explanation by Milt gave:  intersection of Locust and West Washington Square...

1891-1892 Boyd's Blue Book for Philadelphia, date to be looked up, says:

Ayers, Harry Mr. and Mrs., 3205 Powelton av, sum res Wayne PA  <---This is new information, and likely is where Wayne Egbert got his name!- VES.

Wayne, PA could refer to the county, but likely does not.  It likely refers to Wayne, PA, in Delaware County, which is also part of the Main Line where well-to-do individuals from Philadelphia came in Summer to beat the heat.  The head of house would either commute or visit the Main Line on the weekends, while the rest of the family would stay there.  This is attested to by many Philadelphians I interviewed.  Many large and expensive houses, and much money, still resides in Wayne, PA.  Many of the homes are no longer summer homes only, but year-round homes, because of the increase of crime in Philadelphia and its environs.- VES.

1905 Philadelphia City Directory says: Ayres, Henry , gold leaf 702 Wood, h 3205 Powelton av

************************************
An explanation of the summer home in "Wayne", etc.

It is very likely that a well off Philadelphia family would have a summer  home on the Main Line.  Before the Main Line was built, the summer homes were in Germantown.  The Main Line is so-called because it was the main RR line of the old Pennsylvania RR and it roughly parallels Lancaster Ave. (Pike), Rt. 33.  As conditions in the city deteriorated, the families that lived in neighborhoods like Powelton Village finally moved to the Main Line (Wayne)and many are still out there. In fact. most of the old Philadelphia money is on the Main Line.

Wayne is in Delaware Co., near the border with Chester Co.  Near Radnor, King of Prussia, Malvern, Paoli, etc.  Lancaster Ave. is Route 30 (which goes all the way into Phila.).  If you're in the area or have a map of it, take the Blue Route (476) to Route 30, and head west.  Pretty area.  Even today, this is a "moneyed" area.

Wayne, PA is in both Delaware County and Montgomery County.  You really need to know where their address was to look up anything.  I lived in Wayne for many years--lived in Del. City, but worked in Wayne, Montgomery County.  However, the post office is in Del. City.  Confused?  There are colonial buildings that are half in each county!

There are some very large estates, mostly in the Mont. City section that were summer homes at one time, but are now year round residences.  The Del. City side also has some large places, but not to compare to the other side.  This is my personal opinion, mind you, and not the official view.  Not to slight Del City, I lived there all my growing years and beyond.  But, Del. City was more blue collar and Mtg. more white.

At one time it was a practice for the well to do to maintain a summer house on the Main Line, this practice was sold by the railroad to foster service...it was also done on the Chester/Washington line and caused towns such as Glenolden, Norwood and the like to come about. There are still Houses in these towns ,quite large, which were used for the summer. The practice was for the family to go to the summerhouse, to avoid the heat of the city, and the Wage earner to stay in the city . The wage earner would then go to the summerhouse for the weekend.

Wayne was a very popular place for well to do Philadelphia residents to spend their summers.  The men would ride the train (Main Line) into the city each day while the wives and children stayed at their summer home in Wayne.   This helped to develop the western suburbs and the area of Wayne et al is commonly called the Main Line.   Wayne is about 15 miles north west of Phila while the Poconos are about 70 miles north of Phila.

Wayne and the rest of the Main Line was a popular place for summer homes for the rich. The Rail Road (Main Line) made travel to the area convenient and there were many stately homes built there. I remember reading an article in one of the Phila. papers on the history of the Main Line and this was a major theme.

For modern times, on a website, it lists West Village Apartments 3201 Powelton Ave.

Subject: Charles A. Wright genealogy
Date: Thu, 20 Mar 2003 18:41:53 EST

Dear Mr. Summers,
I will be brief. I am doing research for a friend and came across your post about Charles A. Wright from Philadelphia/New Jersey. I am doing research on a Charles A. Wright who was in business with an Ayres. It was a guilding company of some sort. They had worked for a man beveling photos or something and invented a machine and went into business together. I believe Charles brother David was a partner. I don't know the connection with the Ayres family. This information was taken from a biographic sketch written by his son. My friend remembers an Ayres family while growing up but they were just friends not family. Charles' father died when he was young and we don't yet know his name much less any connection. If I can help in any other way let me know. I hope this helped.  Amy

Also:

Charles Wright's father died when he was two and his name is not yet known. Charles was born in Philadelphia, G[i]rard Avenue, and resided there until he moved to New Jersey,Bank Avenue. He was working for a man by the name of Gilby when he thought of a machine that could do the job he was doing by hand...the man didn't want the machine so he quit and started his own business with his partners. In his son's account he was only 14, I think, when this all happened. In 1880, he married a Mary Elizabeth Roland. I believe it is at this time that he moved to Riverton.
There seem to be a lot of Wright's in New Jersey so I am thinking that his father might originally be of that line of Wright's. In this particular line I am looking at I seem to remember some Ayres from a few generations back marrying Wrights. Perhaps there fathers were cousins of some relation and that was the connection. I believe they were also Quakers so I am hoping that I will be able to find some documentation somewhere of family lines. I don't know Charles middle name. His son left it at A, in his bio, and I believe all the census information always had A. ...  Amy.

And:

The LDS info was entered by my friend Nora who was a Mormon for a brief time. An uncle had given her the name Albert but she never found anything that confirmed that so it has always been a question in her mind. The census lists Charles as 21 but he should have been 20 which makes me wonder if the census was wrong or perhaps his son was. His dad supposedly died when he was 2 or so which means he should have been on the 1860 census.  Amy. [Note: I begin to suspect his middle name was actually Alfred, and not Albert.- VES]

Wright Christian, laborer, Girard av ab Ash
Wright George, mariner, 132 Girard av

There is nothing definite here.  The most likely one would appear to be G. WRIGHT, carpenter -- but who is he?  A census lookup for
449 Girard avenue in 1860 might prove enlightening, but it could well be that Charles A would not yet have been born...

Vince

1880: No apparent listing...

1890: Wright, Ayres & Co. (Charles A. Wright & Henry Ayres), gold leaf, 108 N 5th & 527 Arch

I will stick with this guess as a working hypothesis:

Alfred J WRIGHT was the grandparent of Charles Alfred or Albert WRIGHT and G. WRIGHT was his dad?- VES.

This email message was received from Cathy and explains, first, who her grandfather was, who had recorded family data years ago (not known if there are any references anywhere) that give Elizabeth M. Hicks' family ancestors.  To date, this is the only source...-VES 12/4/99

My grandfather was Joseph S. Lord the 3rd.  He was the chief justice of the federal court in philadelphia.  He was a very accomplished man and was very concerned with civil rights. He was born in 1912 (I can get the birth day if you want) and he died in the summer of 1991.

His Parents were Joseph S. Lord, Jr. and Irene Hicks.  Joe jr. was born in 1884 and died in 1954.  Irene was born in 1890 on Seymour st. in Germantown, [Pennsylvania].  She had a sister Mary.  She died October 16, 1961.

Irene's parents were Charles Hicks, who died in 1934, and Margaret Powers (b. August 3, 1858, d. May 13, 1944) Charles Hicks' parents were Charles Hicks and Maria Louisa Hill.

My grandfather is buried at Holy Cross.  Irene Hicks Lord is buried at Westminster.

Charles and Margaret (Powers) Hicks are buried at Holy Cross.  I may have a printout somewhere of who is buried at that family gravesite somewhere.  Maybe Lizzie is buried there.

I am pretty sure that Charles C. Hicks and Maria Louisa Hill lived in Germantown.  If you have access to a census, that would be perfect.

I have renewed interest now in the Hill name and will start actively searching.

There is a Lizzie W. Hicks as the correct choice.

Hi Vince,
In the 1960s, Powelton Village had its own little meeting, held in a house.  I lived in Powelton Village and worked at American Friends Service Committee - (Quaker)  and attended Meeting.

Every meeting had its own personality, so if a person didn't like the Powelton Meeting (small and intimate), then most likely they would have gone to one downtown - since it wasn't that far away...Arlene in CA

I found Elizabeth Ayres still at the address you had, but widowed and living alone in 1930.

According to my 1926 Burlington County Directory, it was Wayne E. Ayres and his wife, Alice N. Ayres, living at 637 Linden Avenue in Riverton.  Wayne is listed as an Assistant Manager for the Travelers Fire Insurance Company in Philadelphia.   Also living in Riverton were the following Ayres: Charles S. Ayres and his wife Anna, a salesman in Philadelphia that resided at 211 Cinnaminson Street in Riverton John F. Ayres, employed in Philadelphia and also living at 211 Cinnaminson Street and Robert C. Ayres, living at 212 Cinnaminson Street.

A private communication by Paul W. Schopp, Executive Director of the Camden County Historical Society, Friday, July 23, 1999.
----

About transportation in 1926 from Riverton to Philadelphia, Mr. Schopp reports, in a private communication:

By 1926 the Delaware River steamboats were no longer operating, having ceased in 1921 when the Dolphin Line withdrew their boats.  However, the Tacony-Palmyra Ferry Company operated ferryboats between Cinnaminson Avenue, Palmyra and the Tacony section of Philadelphia from 1922 until 1929, when the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge opened.  In addition, a Riverton resident could take a train to the Camden ferry terminal and cross the river by ferry to Market Street, Philadelphia.  Trains between Riverton and Philadelphia via the Delair railroad bridge did not begin operating until 1930.  Also, the Delaware River Bridge (a.k.a. the Benjamin Franklin Bridge) opened in July 1926.  So--there are the options for transportation in 1926.

Wayne Egbert Ayres took a boat trip aboard the Bermudian (see the Ellis Island Website) and arrived back at New York.  Here is the data:

Name: Ayres, Wayne E.
Ethnicity:
Place of Residence: Philadelphia, Pa.
Date of Arrival: July 28, 1913
Age on Arrival: 24y
Gender: M
Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Bermudian
Port of Departure: Hamilton, Bermuda

A U.S. citizen

The manifest says he was born 1888 at Wayne, Pennsylvania, and that his residence was 3205 Powelton Avenue.

It would seem Wayne went with a couple of buddies, since the following are listed immediately above and below him:

Budd, Thomas (G or C), 23y 1m male single 1890 Phila Residence: Wayne, Del Co, Pa <-- Maybe W E Ayres named for this Wayne.
Middleton, Arthur R., 23y male single 1889 Phila Residence: 307 N 33rd st Philadelphia Pa

Probably the Thomas Budd who went on the trip with Wayne!

Notes for ALICE N. NICOL:
See Notes under Wayne Egbert Ayres.

There is an Alice Ayres listed in SSDI...  It is definitely not proven that this is the person.   Still, the month and year of birth match the entry for the 1900 census for Alice with her parents.  It would be quite reasonable that she would have her SSN from either NJ or PA.

Alice Ayres
Born 16 Dec 1890
Died Jun 1975
19118 (Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA)
SSN 160-50-9364
Issued: Pennsylvania

Note: 19118 is Chestnut Hill - a fairly well-to-do location in Philadelphia at the time.

Marriage Notes for WAYNE AYRES and ALICE NICOL:
In 1919, Friends' Central High School had a report that Wayne was living at 3205 Powelton Ave., in Philadelphia.  In 1926, Wayne was reported as living at Riverton, NJ.  So either the wedding fell between those dates, and Wayne had his wife with him at his parents' house, or the wedding had not taken place yet.  The latter is likely the case, as Wayne had been in the military before 1919, or the report would not have mentioned his having been in the Navy.  Also he had worked for Aetna by that time.  He was definitely married by 1926, since he and his wife are listed in the 1926 Burlington County Directory. .

Wanted to be a medical doctor in the worst way.  Used to doodle symbols for being a doctor.  Wound up working as a clerk for Burke's Meats, symbolized, as I recall, by a standing Pig with a hat on. -- Vince Summers (from stories told to him)

Email September 7, 1998, by Chris George Shellmet...

I remember Burke's meats factory on Girard Avenue.  I remember the pig in the window.  On Wednesdays, they used to deliver the pigs      from stock cars and run them across several streets to the factory.

A second email from the above person said ...

I think it was a butcher's hat, not a chef's hat ...  The whole body of the pig moved.

Note: In reference to the above, it may or may not have been Edward's building of employment, since he was a clerk.

FRIENDS' CENTRAL SCHOOL

Opened in 1845 near the meeting house at Fourth and Cherry Streets, Friends' Central moved to Fifteenth and Race Streets when the present Race Street Meeting House was erected in 1856.  Since 1925 the school has occupied the old Wistar Morris estate on City Line, Overbrook.  Philadelphia's Friends Center now occupies the Fifteenth Street site.

I apologize.  I was putting in the incorrect name.   According to our systems, a Clifford E. Ayres graduated in 1932 from the Evening    School.  I looked through a yearbook for his picture.  Unfortunately, I could not find it.  Good luck with your continued research.

Your grandfather did attend the University of Pennsylvania for one year.  Our records show he was enrolled in the Evening School in 1907. He did not receive a degree. His address was listed as 3205 Powelton Avenue in Philadelphia. This is all the information we have on Ayres.

I hope this is helpful to you.

Cordially,

IGI Record verifies both the date and the names Henry Ayres, and Lizzie W. Hicks.  Also Edward's birth place as Philadelphia, Philadelphia.

EDWARD C. AYRES
PASSES AWAY
IN ATLANTIC CITY

Edward C. Ayres, of South Church
street, well known in banking and
accounting circles, passed away at
the Hotel Shelburne, Atlantic City,
on Tuesday, from an attack of coro-
nary thrombosis, in the early after-
noon, after an illness of about two
hours.
Respects to his memory are being
paid by relatives and friends tonight
(Thursday) at William Grobler's,
East Main street, from where the
funeral will be held tomorrow (Fri-
day) afternoon at 2 o'clock.  Serv-
ices will be conducted by the Rev. E.
Crawford Williams, minister of the
First Presbyterian Church.  The in-
terment will be in Colestown Ceme-
tery.
Son of the late Henry and Eliza-
beth Ayres, Mr. Ayres was born in
Philadelphia, and was graduated cum
laude ........

and only about two months ago ac-
cepted a responsible accounting pos-
ition with the Shelburne, Atlantic
City.  Mr. Ayres represented all that
was best in manhood - a good life
devoted to his family, and honest and
just in all his dealings.  he is surviv-
ed by his wife, Adele Stockham
Ayres; a daughter, Miss Adele Ayres,
both of Moorestown; and a son, Ed-
ward C. Ayres, Jr., of Merchantville.

Here is a paragraph from an article on the history of Atlantic City, that makes reference to the Shelburne, written by Barbara Kozek:

Atlantic City became "the’ place to go. Entertainers from vaudeville to Hollywood graced the stages of the piers. Glamorous Hotels like Haddon Hall, The Traymore, The Shelburne and The Marlborough-Blenheim drew guests from all over the world. Atlantic City's future seemed bright, until World War II. After the war, the public seemed to stop its love affair with The World's Favorite Playground. Possibly because of the publics access to national air travel, the shift of the population westward, the general deterioration of the city, or a shift in the public’s taste for more sophisticated entertainment, Atlantic City lost much of its shine; and most of its tourists.

Kathy Karn looked up the 1920 Census for Edward Ayres in New Jersey, and obtained:

Now I happened to notice that he was, just a handful of years after marriage, to be found at 901 North Franklin -- in the 1921 PCD.  A
really neat part of this is that his father, Henry AYRES, in the gold leaf business, was still in the Powelton home, which was at 327 N

Died of Heart Attack.  Supposedly, long-term Emphysema hit him over a period of years.  He was loving, yet morose and down-spirited at times, but was never so badly off he wouldn't see his nephews and niece.  A Radio Engineer of high repute with RCA, as I recall.  He owned a 1946 Fleetline Chevy, which remained in his garage in Merchantville, NJ, until after his death.  I never recall a window or a door being open.  The house was pretty much covered with carpet.  I sometimes wonder if this didn't have quite a negative effect on Uncle Edward's emphysema.  He used inhalers quite heavily.- VES.

Dear Mr. Summers:  I am sorry to report that I am not finding very much
helpful data on your mother and uncle's attendance here.  I have no records at
all on your mother,  and your uncle, Edward C. Ayres, Jr.,  apparently was
only here for one full year, 12th grade, in 1933-1934, having entered in the
middle of his junior year.  It says he entered from Moorestown public, and
that he went on to Earlham College.  There is a note on his transcript that he
"was so completely wrapped up in radio that his attendance and work were
seriously handicapped."  His date of birth is July 11, 1913 and his year of
death is noted as 1975.
I have permanent record cards by and large just for people who attended MFS
during the high school years, so it is possible that your mother was here
during earlier grades.  Best wishes in your family history research;  if I
come across any other Ayres I will contact you!  Beth Stouffer, Alumni Office

Your inquiry about ECA, Jr. has been referred to me (Assistant Archivist at
Earlham College) for reply.  He was a student just one year -- 1933-34.
This does not seem to correlate with his having finished Moorestown Friends
School in 1934.  However, our records show him here at EC for the school
year 1933-34.  In the Spring, 1975 issue of the alumni magazine, THE
EARLHAMITE, there is this notice in the class of '37 newsnotes: "Edward
Ayres,'37, writes that he is now disabled with pulmonary emphysema and
bronchiectasis.  He lives at 7016 Browning Rd., Pennsauken, New Jersey
08109."  This is the material readily accessible in our Earlham College
archives.  Since not all issues of THE EARLHAMITE are indexed, there might
be other issues with newsnotes of ECA,Jr. which are not accessible at the
present.  Sorry not to have had more information to pass on to you.  Ellen
