George Robertson Warden

George Robertson Warden spent eight years in Balclutha, Otago, New Zealand where he obtained his education. Sometime about 1892 George with his mother made their way from New Zealand to Brooklyn, New York where George continued his secondary education. An older brother, Charles Howard Warden graduated from Dunedin College of Education in 1891 and lived in New Zealand the rest of his life. Charles was a pupil Teacher in 1886 at Mosgiel. Charles was in Palmerston North to Ohakune (near Wanganui) in 1918 and in 1921 he became Headmaster of Queens Park School until 1924 when he made the move to Wanganui East School as a senior schoolmaster and soon after retiring came his sudden death, July 1931. Charles never saw his brother George but only communicated by letters from New Zealand to New York. Charles became the father of three daughters. George became the father of three sons. Their children were never to meet and to become acquainted. With the help of a New Zealand researcher and modern technology this has changed and we have been able to connect with second cousins. The link below will take you to New Zealand and the places the Robertson-Warden family lived in New Zealand. June 2009 I just found out that Thomas Warden husband of Barbara and father of Charles and George died November 23, 1875 in East Providence, Rhode Island. Thomas was a jeweler and died at age 33 yrs and two months of an aneurism of the aorta. Barbara died June 24, 1899 and was taken to E Providence, Rhode Island for burial. We now know that Thomas and Barbara are buried at Springvale Cemetery in E Providence, Rhode Island and buried with them are Barbara's sisters Jane and Helen. We also partially know the reason for Barbara going to Balclutha, New Zealand was because of the Robertson family sisters and maybe brother went to South Island of New Zealand and James Robertson who took his family to Balclutha about 1856 the time that George Robertson took his family to Brooklyn. Uncertain as to the relationship of James Robertson ; however, I feel there must be a kinship among the Robertson, Ayson, Renton families. December 2010 we just found out that Barbara and boys spent several years in Scotland before going to Balclutha, New Zealand in September 1882 and George's sister Ann Robertson Graham had sons and daughters (the Gows) who also traveled to New Zealand about the same time as Barbara and the boys. Later we found Barbara's older sisters Ann Inglis and Margaret Renton are buried in Otago. Wondering if Peter Robertson who started a winery in New Zealand might be descended from Barbara's brother? There is a likeness of Peter Robertson to our George Robertson Warden. It was Aunt Jean's will that steered me to there being other sisters

GEORGE ROBERTSON WARDEN

August 01, 187? - December 09, 1952
Sons of George Robertson and Belle Shreve Nunez Warden born in Brooklyn, New York. Harry Nunez, Cyrus Ely, and Shreve Graham Warden. A great picture from George Robertson Warden, II, son of Shreve Graham Warden. A fourth son Charles Warden born May 1904 died a few days old and I do not believe the other two sons ever knew they had a baby brother who died before them. So sad and Belle must have had a trauma losing her dad and losing a baby son so close together

A beautiful picture of little Harry Nunez Warden who had blue eyes and blond hair as a toddler and his parents had dark eyes and dark hair

Thanks to Gene and Sue Gardner Shreve for getting the photographs for me. See the following 1920 NY census for the names of those buried there. Cyrus Ely and Shreve Graham are not buried there. Thanks again to Gene and Sue Gardner Shreve for taking us to the Amityville Cemetery in August 2005. Picture below is Cyrus Ely Warden, Jr. standing by Grandfather George Robertson Warden's grave

BR> New York Times for September 21, 1897 -- WARDEN-NUNEZ WEDDING

Miss Belle Shreve Nunez, daughter of Col and Mrs. Joseph A. Nunez, was married last evening to George Robertson Warden. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. David G. Wylie, D.D., in the Scotch Presbyterian Church, Ninety-Sixth Street and Central Park West. The bride wore a gown of white satin and mousseline du sole, and a veil of tulle caught with a wreath of orange blossoms. She was attended by her sister, Miss Sue Nunez, the maid of honor, who wore a costume of yellow Dresden silk, trimmed with yellow chiffon

John Wall, Assistant District Attorney of Brooklyn, was best man, and the ushers were Thomas Beattie, F. H. Whittemore, Thomas Van Orden, Frank Close, Ernest Mihar, and J. S. Larbig. The music was under the direction of Dr. S. N. Penfield, and a small reception followed the ceremony at the residence of the bride's parents, 46 West Ninety-third Street. Many beautiful presents were received by the young couple, who left at midnight for Old Point Comfort, Va, where they will spend their honeymoon

  • The vintage car Willys Overland Touring Automobile made its debut in America about 1914-1915 ; however, I believe this car was imported by Uncle Henry (sometimes called Harry) Nunez. The couple in the back seat is George R. and Belle Shreve Nunez Warden, and the nice looking gentleman in the front seat has to be Uncle Henry (Harry). The picture was most likely taken in Brooklyn, New York after the wedding...Is it possible that this car was imported from England just in time for the marriage of George & Belle in September 1897? The Nunez men were into importing & exporting in the early 19th century. Uncle Henry had no children & Belle named her first son Harry Nunez Warden for Uncle Henry who did so much for the them during the wedding

ENGAGEMENTS -- WARDEN-von AUW--Mr. and Mrs. Alwin von Auw of 451 Westminster Road, Brooklyn, N. Y., announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Emilie von Auw, to Harry Nunez Warden, son of Mr. and Mrs. George R. Warden of Brooklyn, N.Y

New York Times February 9, 1923 Obituary Notes

HARRY NUNEZ WARDEN, 22 years old, a naval veteran of the World War, died in the New York Hospital on Tuesday as a result of influenza contacted while he was serving in the Mine Laying Division in the North Sea and from which he never fully recovered. He was only 16 years old when he volunteered, and with his father's consent enlisted in the navy. His home was at 576 Seventh Street, Brooklyn

How sad to think he was going to get married and wedding plans were put on hold. I have found Emilie still unmarried in 1939 when her mother died and left estate to Emilie, her brother and her sister
From George Robertson Warden, Bob, (as told to Bob by his Dad, Shreve Graham Warden] Harry Warden the oldest son looked much older than he was. At age 14 he could pass for 21 yrs. So when World War I broke out he enlisted in the Navy. After the war he returned home where he learned he had diabetes. This was before insulin injections were developed and the treatment was to restrict all sugar. As a young vibrant man, it was very hard on him. He was depressed with the illness and one day just stuffed himself with chocolate cake, candy and sugar and went into a coma that he never recovered from and eventually died and was buried in Amityville Cemetery in 1922 at the age of 22 yrs Shreve, the younger brother, implied strongly to his son Bob, that Harry wanted to end the suffering and he chose to end it this way

Harry was engaged to be married to Emily von Auw, but he had influenza from the war and also came down with diabetes ; poor thing no wonder he stuffed himself; he was going to die and was to be married. Emily never married. Emily died in 1986 in New Mexico where she was an art instructor. Her brother Frederick von Auw died in Ft Lauderdale, Florida in 1984. Margaret E. von Auw Olson's son has come to my rescue and we have exchanged lots of information on Harry and Emilie. Thanks to public libraries across the country, we are continuing to learn more about Emilie. What a great loss to the Warden family ; if she had lived our family would be extended. How sad their love did not blossom with a marriage
