Joshua Courson lived in that portion of Camden Co., GA that is now Brantley. He participated in the Indian War of 1838-1841 and served in Capt. James A. Sweat's company of the Ware County militia as a private from June 9th through December 31st of 1838, and as a corporal from August 19, 1840 to June 1, 1841. He served again as a private from October 6th to December 3rd of 1841 as shown by company payrolls in Washington. This company patrolled the north and west sides of the Okefenokee Swamp. He applied for and was granted bounty land for his service. He married his commander's niece, Mary Sweat.
