Though born in NC, John Harvey DeHart moved with his parents as an infant to Tennessee, then to Kentucky where he grew to maturity. He had little interest in education, preferring to work with his hands. He left Kentucky in October of 1828, on horseback with his wife and first two children, to move back to North Carolina. He settled in Macon Co., now Swain, where he remained for the rest of his life. His father and other relatives soon followed. They lived for a year on the Hall farm opposite the mouth of Cowee Creek, then moved to a farm belonging to the state about two miles below the mouth of Licklog Creek. He joined the Brush Creek Baptist Church in 1834 and became a deacon. In time, he purchased Joe Sherrill's farm on Alarka Creek, three miles south of the present city limits of Bryson City. He continued to buy land and ultimately became the largest landowner in Swain County. He built mills, purchased slaves, and farmed on a large scale for that time. He had a dark complexion, although his eyes were blue and his hair light colored. He was industrious and frugal, with no sympathy for poverty.

He had his own interpretation of the scripture: "Whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn him the other also." His version: "If a man should smite me on the right cheek, it is my duty to turn to him the other also. Then, if my assailant is beastly enough to smite the other, it is my privilege to turn on the brute and beat the devil out of him."

Nathan DeHart and Catherine Ramsey had these seven children: John Harvey (b.1804), William (b.1806), Mary (b.1810), Eleanor (b.1813), Sarah (b.1816), Eli Martin (b.1818), and Elijah Morgan (b.1820). In 1858, Nathan wrote a letter to his grandson Martin DeHart which goes far in establishing this line. This letter is on a separate web page - NathanDeHartLetter1858.

Elias DeHart
and Elizabeth Toleson had these nine children: Elias (b.1757), Elijah, Elisha, Mary (b.1761), Sarah (b.1762), John (b.1777), Reuben (b.1780), Nathan (b.1781), and Thomas.

Simon DeHart
and Aylse Eleson had these seven children: Simon (b.1728), Elias (b.1730), Aaron (b.1732), Catherine, Amy, Gabriel, and Geesie.

Elias S. DeHart
and Catherine Lane had these eight children: Uriah, Simon (b.1703), Jannetje(b.1705), Cornelius (b.1707), Elias (b.1709), Aert (b.1711), Katelenke (b.1715), and Gilbert.

Simon A. DeHart
and Gertje Cornelissen had these ten children: Simon (b.1665), Cornelius (b.1671), Catherine, Clasje (b.1675), Elias (b.1677), Gysbert (b. 1679), Dorothea (b.1679), Geertje (b.1682), Simon (b.1684), and Annetje (b.1681).

Richard Ramsey and Elizabeth Sumter had these eight children: William., Isham, Randle, Ransom, Betty, Catherine, Polly, and Patsy.
