He was a heavy set man, of average heigh. He had brown hair and grey eyes beneath heavy brows. He was a serious and fearless man, but mild and friendly. He frequently quoted from the Bible. He moved with his parents from Alabama to Tennessee when the countryside was little more than virgin forest land. His brother, Nathan T., was born in Tennessee. The two boys grew up very close. When he was 20 the two of them walked over narrow mountain roads and winding trails to Kentucky to visit relatives. He had a wild time with other young people in the community, but this all changed when he met and married Lydia DeHart. He then bought a farm on a brook flowing into Alarka Creek near the DeHart mills. A few years later they bought a farm containing 640 acres on the right bank of the Little Tennessee River near Sawmill Creek. He joined the Brush Creek Baptist Church and was a consistent member for the rest of his life. He was baptized by the Rev. David Elder on the first Sunday of November in 1846. When fighting broke out in the Civil War, he volunteered to fight for the Confederacy. He was assigned to duty with the Home Guard where he served until he became too old. As he grew older his health declined badly. He was confined to bed for the last three years of his life, suffering severe pain much of the time. He and his wife are buried in the Tabor Cemetery on a knoll in the Brush Creek Community of Swain County, NC.
