Lydia DeHart was born near Bowling Green, Kentucky, the oldest child of John DeHart and Jane Roberts. When she was four years old she set out with her parents on horseback for Macon County, North Carolina. That long trip over the mountains, held on a horse by her mother, was one of her first memories. She was of medium height and weight and had blue eyes and a fair complexion. Lydia was a devoted wife and mother, ministering to the needs of her family with love and discipline.

One of Lydia's less pleasant memories was having to take the news to her father that her young sister, Hazeltine, had drowned in the Little Tennessee River. Their home was on the banks of the river. In an unguarded moment the little two year old girl had slipped on the bank and fallen in. By the time her mother could get to her it was too late.

From the time Lydia was twelve, she assisted in the birthings of her brothers and sisters. As the oldest daughter, she had the responsibility of keeping her mother's house in order. Her load was lightened somewhat when her father became able to purchase slaves. "Aunt Sookey" then did much of the drudgery.

She joined the Cold Spring Baptist Church as an older teenager, transferring her membership to Brush Creek Baptist Church after she was married. She brought all of her children up with regular teaching from the Bible.

Lydia survived her husband for 25 years. After the children were all grown she moved off the farm to live with her younger children. She died at the age of 90, agile and alert to the end. She is buried with her husband in the Tabor Cemetery in the Brush Creek Community of Swain County, North Carolina.
