Mary Love Lewis graduated from Patterson High School in Patterson, Georgia in 1936. She attended South Georgia Teachers College (now Georgia Southern University), then taught school for three years before moving to Washington D.C. after the start of World War II. In Washington she worked as a cryptographer for the FBI. It was in Washington that she met Dave Schumaker, then a young marine. They corresponded for three years while he was serving in the Pacific. After they were married, they made homes in many places: Quantico, VA; Barstow, CA; Camp Lejeune, NC; Camp Pendleton, CA; Parris Island, SC; Springfield, VA; Troy, NY; Albany, GA; Scotsville, VA; Riverview, FL, and Charlottesville, VA.
After retirement, Mary Love and Dave began pulling an Airstream trailer, travelling through all of the United States and Canadian provinces.
