Nathan Elbert Tabor was born on 11 May 1848 in Macon County, North Carolina (now Swain). He was the son of James Sharpe Tabor and Lydia DeHart. He resembled his father the most of any of his brothers. He was an unassuming man, industrious and frugal. He seldom wasted energy on non-essential activity. He married Mary Ann Martha Davis on 2 March 1871. Soon after marriage he bought half of the farm once owned by his grandfather and namesake, Nathan Tabor. Since his grandfather's death, the farm had grown up in weeds. It took a lot of energy and skillful management to bring it back to the point where he could earn a living and put something aside for retirement. He was known throughout the county as an honest man, and he was a faithful member of the Brush Creek Baptist Church. He and Martha had three children, all born in the Brush Creek Community.
Nathan Elbert Tabor died on 21 March 1923 at the age of 75. Nathan and Mary Ann are buried in the Tabor Cemetery at Brush Creek in Swain County, North Carolina less than a mile from where they spent their entire lives.
