Gottfried Wille brought his family from Pomerania (now Poland) to the United States to escape the pressure to join the State Church - the Catholics. Refusal to join resulted in religious persecution. They came aboard the sailing vessel "Sylvester," arriving in New York on September 8, 1843. He died in Milwaukee from typhoid fever.
