NATHAN GORNTO was born on September 17, 1779 in Onslow County, North Carolina, the son of John Gornto, Jr. and Rhoda Jarrett. He married Easter Burnett on October 16, 1802. He moved to Bulloch County, Georgia from North Carolina about 1800. He moved to and was one of the first settlers of old Irwin County, Georgia, being one of the 70-odd families enumerated there in the 1820 census. There he served as Tax-Collector in 1825 and 1826 and Justice of the Peace from 1827 to 1831. Nathan and Easter had these nine children: David (b.1804), Joel (b.1806), Hannah (b.1809), Ellender (b.1811), Polly (b.1813), John (b.1815), Elijah (b.1817), Elizabeth (b.1821), and James (1824).
After the death of his daughter, Ellender, in 1847, he and his wife moved to Madison County, Florida. They moved back to Brooks County in 1858 and made their home with son Joel, but when Joel died in a small pox epidemic, Nathan left hurriedly to go back to Florida where he lived with son David in Lafayette County. He served in the Indian War in Florida as a private under Capt. Robert D. Bradley in the 13th Regiment of the Florida militia for two months in early 1838.
JOHN GORNTO, JR. was born about 1750 in Onslow County, North Carolina. He married Rhoda Jarrett there about 1777. They had three children: Nathan (b.1779), Hannah, and David.
JOHN GORNTO, SR. was born about 1729 in Onslow County, North Carolina. He and wife Mary had these seven children: John Jr. (b.1750), Arthur, Margaret, Frances, Elizabeth, Amy, and Lydia.
WILLIAM GORNTO had these five children: Peter, Margaret, Mary, Elizabeth, and John (b.1729).
