The Berg family lived on Mazloh Street - Nr.52 in the village of Quetzen, province of Westfalia, Kingdom of Prussia. It was the custom in those days to number the houses in the order they were built. So, Nr.52 indicates that the Berg house was the 52nd house built in Quetzen. This was a farmhouse on about 100 acres of land. The original house has long since burned to the ground. In 1984, the only building remaining from the Berg's time there was the barn.

Johann Berg
acquired the property through his marriage to Anne Dreves. He was the oldest son of Conrad Berg, who was just a hireling, or laborer. He was the first of the Bergs to become a landowner. When he died he left behind seven sons.

The cause of his death is shown on the death certificate as "narrow breasted."
