Lydia Berg was affectionately called Lydie by her family, and Miss "O" by her students. She and brother Albert invested in a tuberculosis sanitarium in Asheville, North Carolina about 1917. She fell in love with a Cuban born patient. Ossorio was a dentist. They were married and went to Cuba to make their home. They had one child who died an infant. Edelmiro never recovered from the tuberculosis, and finally passed away. Moving to Cuba in that manner at that time was considered a renunciation of Lydie's American citizenship. She had no end of trouble regaining her citizenship and returning to the United States. When she finally managed the return, she began teaching business and language courses at Plant High School in Tampa - a job she kept until she retired.
