After their marriage he graduated from Georgia Tech in 1955. His first job out of school was as a field engineer with Florida Power & Light Co. in Sarasota, Florida. This is where their first child Larry was born. Transferring to Fort Myers, then Punta Gorda, Walter remained with Florida Power & Light for three years before taking a job in Tampa as a plant engineer for a shrimp processing company called Shoreline Seafoods of America, Inc. He stayed with them for five years promoting to Production Manager near the end of that time. John and Laura were born in Tampa. In 1963, he moved the family to St. Simons Island, Georgia where he took a job as General Manager of another shrimp processor called Gulf Gold, Inc. In 1965, he moved the operation to Tampa and remained with the company for eleven years. He and Ann made their home in Brandon, Florida.

In 1977, Walter entered law school at Stetson Law School in St. Petersburg, Florida, graduating in 1980. He was with the law firm of Trinkle & Redman, PA in Brandon, Florida for eight years before entering practice on his own. He retired in 1990, selling their home and moving into an Airstream travel trailer to travel the country. He and Ann spent a year and a half in the trailer before building a new home on a mountainside near Young Harris, Georgia in 1991. They continued to travel, ultimately visiting all 50 states, most of the Canadian provinces, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Besides travelling, Walter's hobbies are woodworking, genealogy, and using the computer.
