Walter Fathauer graduated from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) with an engineering degree. He began his career with the
X-Ray Division of General Electric Company in Chicago. In 1943, at the urging of Isabel's father, Lemuel Shattuck, Walter and Isabel moved to Tucson, Arizona to manage Mr. Shattuck's cattle interests. Lemuel Shattuck made his wealth primarily from copper mines in the vicinity of Bisbee, Arizona. He was also a banker and beer distributor.

Walter took his work with Mr. Shattuck's interests seriously, and it was not long before he was a wealthy man in his own right. Walter and Isabel purchased a home at the foot of the mountains overlooking the city of Tucson from the noted author, Erskine Caldwell.
